Along the way, he also captured images of other employees - ushers, security staff, commissary workers, and union officials. The result, Wrigley Field's Amazing Vendors, offers an inside look of Major League Baseball that Arcadia Publishing is proud to include in its Images of Modern America series. The subjects themselves are amazing: a blind Frosty Malt vendor; a singing peanut vendor; a Coca-Cola vendor who went on to become an economic adviser to the president of the United States. Many of the vendors photographed in the 1970s are still in the aisles of Wrigley Field today. Others left for new career opportunities, while a few became legends in vending history.

The first act of false religion - religion defined as the effort of the soul to make oneself presentable and acceptable to God outside of relational accountability to and submissive dependence upon God - was performed by our first parents in a garden “sewing room” - the stitching together of fig leaves in an effort to cover the shame of personal nakedness. But the real genius in this first act of religion was not the ability to create coverings; the far greater wonder was in the uniformity of the coverings. An apron is an apron, and I suspect there was no distinction, difference, or uniqueness between his and hers. And there the two core characteristics of false religion emerged: self-effort and uniformity. The great post-flood corporate expression of this was the Tower of Babel. God’s response was to confuse the best efforts of man’s uniformity by introducing into its monotonous sameness distinction, difference, and uniqueness. Driven by its passion for the pseudo-security and comfort of uniformity - which masquerades as unity - the best that the religious soul of man can do is clone carbon copies of the sameness. In contrast to this narrowness is the infinite creativity of the unbounded love of the Sovereign God, who delights in the true unity of spiritual reality that allows for, promotes, and enables infinite distinction, uniqueness, and difference of external expression and “performance”. Therein lies the ancient conflict between the religious soul caught up with the pinching uniformity of doing and the infinite broadness of Sovereignty, who’s unlimited provision negates and renders ridiculous our silly fig-leaf aprons. The flashpoint of this historic engagement - the place where true and false religion collide - is that mysterious world in each of us where S/spirit and soul meet in the dance.

This story line, which motivates much of our professional research, has helped us limit the material presented to a more humane and more realistic amount than is presented in many beginning university physics courses. The theme of atoms also supports the presentation of more non-Newtonian topics and ideas than is customary in the ?rst term of calculus-level physics. We think it is important and desirable to introduce students sooner than usual to some of the major ideas that shape contemporary physicists’ views of the nature and behavior of matter. Here in the second decade of the twenty-?rst century such a goal seems particularly appropriate. The quantum nature of atoms and light and the mysteries associated with quantum behavior clearly interest our students. By adding and - phasizing more modern content, we seek not only to present some of the physics that engages contemporary physicists but also to attract students to take more physics. Only a few of our beginning physics students come to us sharply focused on physics or astronomy. Nearly all of them, h- ever, have taken physics in high school and found it interesting.

Biomagnetism is the study of magnetic fields that originate in biological systems. This is a relatively new discipline that has attracted considerable interest throughout the scientific commu- ty. The study of biomagnetic fields requires the use of techniques and concepts drawn from widely disparate scientific disciplines. To make these techniques and concepts available to a wide spectrum of the scientific community, a NATO Advanced study Institute on B- magnetism was held near Frascati at Grottaferrata, Italy, in S- tember 1982. This volume is based on the lectures delivered by scholars representing many different scientific areas, ranging from solid state physics to psychology. It attempts to preserve the - herent development of concepts drawn from physiology, psychology, biology, physics, medicine, occupational health and geology that was evident during the Institute. The reader will quickly become aware that the progress in biomagnetism over the past decade was due principally to the efforts of interdisciplinary teams of sci- tists. One of the purposes of this volume is to make all of the basic principles and findings of biomagnetism available in one place, so that scientists who have already embarked on the study of biomagnetism or who plan to do so in the near future will have them available for study and reference. Each section of this volume was written by a recognized expert who lectured at the Institute on the topics he describes here.
