Twelve year-old writer Lucy Lareau, collaborates with her mom, Liz, and artist Ryan Jampole (Artist on Geronimo Stilton), on a series devoted to following five young girls, who have named themselves the Geeky F@b 5, taking on projects fearlessly. When a tornado rips through the town of Normal, the local animal shelter is devastated leaving many animals needing emergency homes and care. The Geeky F@b 5 are up to the challenge and rally all of Earhart Elementary School to help. Sofia gets busy helping code a matchmaking program to match the pets to households and A.J. fits a harness for a handicapped basset hound. But can Marina get over her fear of snakes to help some in need? Join these 5 girls, and that sassy cat Hubble, as they learn that friendship isn’t always just a human thing!
Lucy Monroe’s first day at Earhart Elementary is one for the yearbook: By recess she has launched herself off the rusty monkey bars and ended up face down onto the blacktop. The principal closes the rickety playground, and now the whole school is mad! What’s a new girl to do? Create a band of geeky friends to build a cool new playground together! Easy, right? Join Lucy, the gang, Hubble the snarky kitty, and their TV reporter buddy, Suzy Pundergast, to find out if they can prove the meanies wrong because when girls stick together, anything is possible!
What do you get when you put 5 girls (and a snarky cat) in a RV and send them to the Great Smoky Mountains? An adventure of a lifetime! Join Lucy, Marina, Zara, A.J., Hubble, Sofia and her abuelo on an unforgettable trip to explore nature and discover the centuries of history within the park. The Geeky Fab Five will be trailblazers and maybe even hug some ancient trees while they are at it as these geeky girls take to the woods, in their signature GF5 style. From bear sightings to the barely any wifi, these girls will rough it and hopefully make it out of the park in one piece.
In their next adventure, the Geeky Fab Five discover a hidden garden filled with Monarch butterflies and honeybees. While the girls are learning in science class that Monarchs and bees are becoming endangered, something threatens their secret butterfly garden behind Earhart. To solve the mystery, Hubble the GFF mascot (and ever-so-curious cat) discovers a secret that gets him catnapped! In a race against time, the girls must rescue Hubble, save the garden, and solve the mystery of the missing Monarchs.
In the past two decades, several U.S. states have explored ways to mainstream media literacy in school curriculum. However one of the best and most accessible places to learn this necessary skill has not been the traditional classroom but rather the library. In an increasing number of school, public, and academic libraries, shared media experiences such as film screening, learning to computer animate, and video editing promote community and a sense of civic engagement. The Library Screen Scene reveals five core practices used by librarians who work with film and media: viewing, creating, learning, collecting, and connecting. With examples from more than 170 libraries throughout the United States, the book shows how film and media literacy education programs, library services, and media collections teach patrons to critically analyze moving image media, uniting generations, cultures, and communities in the process.
This is a unique portrait of a group of working-class families whose 4 year old children start school on the cusp of the millenium in urban Britain. It is a brilliant analysis of ways in which parents, children and teachers strive to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries to come to a common understanding of 'school'. Beautifully written, it is essential reading for all involved in the education of young children." - Eve Gregory, Professor of Language and Culture in Education, Goldsmiths, University of London. "This book will challenge and support practitioners in their quest to improve early childhood practice. The use of theory is 'friendly' and the real-life examples of the experiences of young children and their parents really bring home to the reader the experience of inequality. Readers will rarely find a book which expresses the complexity of educational experience in such an accessible form. This is a valuable book for every level of early years training." - Iram Siraj-Blatchford, Professor of Early Childhood Education, Institute of Education, University of London. How does the home experience of children from poor and ethnic minority communities influence their adaptation to school? How does the traditional 'child-centred' and progressive pedagogy of early years classrooms meet the needs of children from culturally diverse backgrounds? Starting School seeks to address these key questions by tracing the learning experiences of individual children from a poor inner-urban neighbourhood - half of them from Bangladeshi families - as they acquire the knowledge appropriate to their home culture and then take this knowledge to their reception class. The book highlights the small differences in family life - in parenting practices, in perspectives on childhood, and in beliefs about work and play - which make a big difference to children's adaptations to school. In other words, it shows how children succeed and fail from their early days at school. It shows too how the 'good intentions' of good teachers can sometimes allow children from certain backgrounds to become disaffected, and learn to fail; and it suggests ways of working with children from working class and multicultural families which may help both children and parents to gain a better understanding of school learning in the UK.

A new girl has just moved into the GF5’s class at Earhart Elementary along with her little brother. Fiona is quiet and thin and a bit forgetful as she didn't bring her lunch or snack to school. The Geeky F@b 5 befriend Fiona, who is particularly impressed with Sophia’s tablet, Marina’s knowledge of space, and Lucy's fluffy kitty, Hubble. When Fiona gets called away to the principal’s office after school, the GF5 doesn't know why. When walking home they discover, she lives in a nearby motel, not a house. As they begin to understand Fiona's story, the girls learn that she and other kids like her are homeless and don't always have food. To help, the GF5 bands together to launch a citywide student food drive among grade schools that explodes into a fierce competition to see which school collects the most food by weight. The winning school gets a big bash with a DJ. Which school win win? Join the adventures as GF5 rallies students to fight for Fiona.Even Hubble the snarky cat, hilariously foils crosstown rivals the Madison Mackerel mascot who hatches a diabolical plan to sabotage Earhart.
