This study presents a framework for the development of social indicators to measure the impact of tourism on communities. It is a research project which emanated from the Green Globe 21 Standard that incorporates indicators for the environmental impact of tourism and seeks to develop other indicators. The report provides the theoretical background to the concept of sustainable tourism and examines the preliminary findings of the key themes from some exploratory research. This study sought to gain insight to international students studying on the Gold Coast. In particular, data were obtained on student needs and perceptions on a range of attributes associated with a study destination. Similarly, the study investigated students' participation in tourism activities while at the destination. Finally, information on what students spend their money on was also sought. A questionnaire was developed based on relevant literature and preliminary focus groups. This report provides the findings from a comparative study of the social impacts of three events located in different regions and differentiated by theme. The three events were the Australian Grand Prix, the Moomba Festival, and the Horsham Art Is... Festival. The key objective of this report was to examine host community perceptions of event impacts across a range of events and host communities, specifically a comparison of different themed events in the same community, and a comparison of similar themed events in different sized communities. The significance of community titled accommodation from a tourism perspective underlines the need for appropriately designed research to inform tourism strategic decision-making. This report also provides some comment on the contemporary European experience with condominium complexes in key tourism destinations and concludes with a description of several planned research initiatives relating to community titled complexes. The primary aim of the report is to develop tools for measuring and enhancing the yield from tourism at the business, regional and national levels. This overall objective subsumes several more specific objectives: * First, to clarify the different concepts of tourism yield. * Second, to develop operational measures of yield at the level of the firm and at destination, regional, state and national levels. * The final objective involves discussion and analysis of the policy implications of the study.
