Established in 1852, Findlay Market is Ohio's oldest public market in continuous operation. Findlay Market opened just outside Cincinnati's city limits on land donated by James Findlay, in an area then known as the "Northern Liberties." Because the Northern Liberties lay beyond city jurisdiction, the area was known for social liberties such as prostitution, bootlegging, and thievery. In an effort to protect "the housewives" shopping there, city officials annexed the Findlay Market area. Annexation, however, did little to quell Findlay Market's outlying spirit. This spirit has contributed to its outlasting every other municipal market in the city and a rebelliousness that infuses the generations of vendors and shoppers who have forged strong relationships with one another and who continue to demand the City of Cincinnati wrestle with the complex urban challenges surrounding this beloved institution.

A critical study of the use of language and the proliferation of text in 1960s art and experimental music, with close examinations of works by Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, John Cage, Douglas Huebler, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, La Monte Young, and others. Language has been a primary element in visual art since the 1960s—in the form of printed texts, painted signs, words on the wall, recorded speech, and more. In Words to Be Looked At, Liz Kotz traces this practice to its beginnings, examining works of visual art, poetry, and experimental music created in and around New York City from 1958 to 1968. In many of these works, language has been reduced to an object nearly emptied of meaning. Robert Smithson described a 1967 exhibition at the Dwan Gallery as consisting of “Language to be Looked at and/or Things to be Read.” Kotz considers the paradox of artists living in a time of social upheaval who use words but chose not to make statements with them. Kotz traces the proliferation of text in 1960s art to the use of words in musical notation and short performance scores. She makes two works the “bookends” of her study: the “text score” for John Cage's legendary 1952 work 4'33”—written instructions directing a performer to remain silent during three arbitrarily determined time brackets—and Andy Warhol's notorious a: a novel—twenty-four hours of endless talk, taped and transcribed—published by Grove Press in 1968. Examining works by artists and poets including Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, George Brecht, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Jackson Mac Low, and Lawrence Weiner, Kotz argues that the turn to language in 1960s art was a reaction to the development of new recording and transmission media: words took on a new materiality and urgency in the face of magnetic sound, videotape, and other emerging electronic technologies. Words to Be Looked At is generously illustrated, with images of many important and influential but little-known works.
I was amazed how well Liz Newall drew me into the world of Icie Jones. In lesser hands, the potentially complex telling of Icie's story could have been maudlin, but, delightfully, it's compelling, intriguing and sparkling with Southern delight. You Don't Have to Tell Everything You Know is, quite simply, wonderful." -Mark A. Stevens, author, The Clinchfield No. 1: Tennessee's Legendary Steam Engine Isamar Woods Jones McGee, was born in upstate South Carolina into a second family in 1865, one month after the Civil War ended. Her life is a product of unsettled times, family dynamics, and the human condition. She tells her story and those of the people around her through journal entries, which she annotates and amends in her final days. Her travels take her down the Savannah River and to the 1901 Charleston Exposition where she meets Beautiful Jim Key, billed as the world's smartest horse, and a young Nancy Columbia, the Inuit star of stage and screen in the early 1900s. Isamar's life and times offer a fascinating, often funny, sometimes complex testament to the joys and sorrows of the human heart -- regardless of era. You Don't Have to Tell Everything You Know attempts to find meaning in the randomness of life -- a butterfly wing, a war, a Bible verse, a chance meeting -- the stuff of one's own story. "Liz Newall has created an endearing, relatable character in Isamar 'Icie' Jones. And it is this character's story -- as told to us in richly detailed fashion throughout -- that captured my desire to learn all I could about Icie and her world. Let me encourage you to pour yourself a cognac (you'll understand why), curl up, and spend the next few hours taking in every line that Newall beautifully dedicated to the Southern dialogue." -Clem Stambaugh, poet, In Black and Light

So far Henderson is shaping up to be exactly as advertised. Jaxon Wright is certain no grown-ass man should be subjected to moving back in with his folks. But after his NASCAR dream dies a quick and merciless death, he’s back sharing living quarters with the bossiest of his four older brothers. Why are Australian leaders so reluctant to acknowledge the power they have and unsure what to do with it? Australian Leadership Paradox claims Australians have a serious problem with leadership. It explains the cultural roots of this problem, and ways we can become more purposeful leaders. Australians bemoan the quality of our leaders. We blame those in power for not showing leadership, only to turn on them when they start tackling the hard issues they are expected to fix. No wonder that even the most passionate and talented among us hesitate to take up this important role. The Australian Leadership Paradox offers us a circuit breaker for this impasse, providing new insights into Australia's distinct leadership culture and showing us a new way forward. It exposes the inherent tensions in Australians' historical relationship with authority; interrogates our culture of mateship and egalitarianism, and challenges the narrative of a nation of Aussies battling adversity when we are actually living in 'the lucky country'. These tensions are the paradoxes of Australian leadership. Drawing on their extensive experience working with hundreds of leaders from government, business and community organisations, Geoff Aigner and Liz Skelton show how it's possible for Australian leadership to be inspiring, sustainable and effective - and how we can participate in creating the change we want to see in the world. 'Aigner and Skelton challenge our understanding of what leadership characteristics are needed in the Australian context, with every page presenting new insights and possibilities. a fascinating portrayal of how leadership is exercised in our institutions but leaves us yearning for something much better.' - Robert Fitzgerald AM, Commissioner, Productivity Commission '.in the tradition of Donald Horne's The Lucky Country. this book challenges us to rise above complacency and complaint and accept that leadership and power are needed for progress.' - Professor Geoff Gallop, former Premier of Western Australia 'This is a reaffirming and engaging book and will be my new recommended read for people trying to understand the complexity of leadership in Australia. There is warmth and optimism about creating a new Australian leadership story which makes it all seem possible.' - Wendy McCarthy AO
