Since its inception, U.S. American cinema has grappled with the articulation of racial boundaries. This applies, in the first instance, to featuring mixed-race characters crossing the color line. In a broader sense, however, this also concerns viewing conditions and knowledge configurations. The fact that American film engages itself so extensively with the unbalanced relation between black and white is neither coincidental nor trivial to state — it has much more to do with disputing boundaries that pertain to the medium itself. Escherichia coli isolates produce a range of cell-surface polysaccharides which mediate interactions between the bacteria and their environment. The best-studied glycoconjugates are lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and capsular polysaccharide (CPS). LPS is a component of the outer membrane in all E. coli strains and it plays a critical role in the barrier properties of the cell envelope and resistance to host factors including cationic antimicrobial peptides and the complement system. LPS is also a biologically active molecule that activates TLR4-mediated signaling leading to endotoxic shock. In contrast, only some strains of E. coli make capsular polysaccharides (CPSs). The capsule plays a major role in evasion of the host immune system and is particularly important for the pathogenesis of uropathogenic and meningitis-associated E. coli. This chapter discusses the biosynthesis of LPS and capsule as well as their contributions to the virulence of pathogenic E. coli.
Equine sarcoids (ES) and equine malignant melanoma (EMM) are among the tumors affecting horses diagnosed most frequently. Both cutaneous neoplasms can be a significant cause of economic losses, morbidity and mortality in the animals. The treatment of equine skin cancer can be challenging and established, evidence-based therapies resulting in sustained tumor regression are rare. The pentacyclic, lupane-type triterpenes betulinic acid (BA) and betulin can be isolated from many botanical sources, predominantly from the bark of white birch and plane trees. In addition to various biological properties, they have gained attention mainly due to their anticancer features. Within the framework of the current PhD project, the compounds BA, BA derivative NVX-207, and betulin derivative betulinyl-bis-sulfamate were assessed in various in vitro and in vivo studies for their potential as a topical therapy for ES and EMM. In conclusion, the results generated from cell culture experiments, skin permeation assays and studies in the target species are promising. Further advancement of the investigational medicinal products studied herein could lead to an effective topical and marketable, novel drug which helps to relieve suffering and, consequently, improve the welfare of equine skin cancer patients.

The central assertion in this volume is that the young child uses general skills, scaffolded by adults, to acquire the complex knowledge of sound patterns and the goal-directed behaviors for communicating ideas through language and producing speech. A child’s acquisition of phonology is seen as a product of her physical and social interaction capacities supported by input from adult models about ambient language sound patterns. Acquisition of phonological knowledge and behavior is a product of this function-oriented complex system. No pre-existing mental knowledge base is necessary for acquiring phonology in this view. Importantly, the child’s diverse abilities are used for many other functions as well as phonological acquisition. Throughout, an evaluation is made of the research on patterns of typical development across languages in monolingual and bilingual children and children with speech impairments affecting various aspects of their developing complex system. Also considered is the status of available theoretical perspectives on phonological acquisition relative to an emergence proposal, and contributions that this perspective could make to more comprehensive modeling of the nature of phonological acquisition are proposed. Instrument of Memory: Encounters with the Wandering Jew, the first English-language study of the legend in over fifty years, is also the first to examine the influence of the legend’s medieval and early modern sources over the centuries into the present day. Using the lens of memory studies, the work shows how the Christian tradition of the legend centered the memory of the Passion at the heart of the Wandering Jew’s curse. Instrument of Memory also shows how Jewish artists and writers have reimagined the legend through Jewish memory traditions. Through this focus on memory, Jewish adapters of the legend create complex renderings of the Wandering Jew that recognize not only the entanglement of Jewish and Christian memory, but also the impact of that entanglement on Jewish subjects. This book presents a complex, sympathetic, and more fully realized version of the legend while challenging the limits of the presentism of memory studies.
In the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, recent technological developments in music listening enabled troops to carry with them vast amounts of music and easily acquire new music, for themselves and to share with their fellow troops as well as friends and loved ones far away. This ethnographic study examines U.S. troops' musical-listening habits during and after war, and the accompanying fear, domination, violence, isolation, pain, and loss that troops experienced. My Music, My War is a moving ethnographic account of what war was like for those most intimately involved. It shows how individuals survive in the messy webs of conflicting thoughts and emotions that are intricately part of the moment-to-moment and day-to-day phenomenon of war, and the pervasive memories in its aftermath. It gives fresh insight into musical listening as it relates to social dynamics, gender, community formation, memory, trauma, and politics.
Ancient Gordion has long been recognized as a key Iron Age site for Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean. Archaeological research has revealed much about its sequence of occupation. However, as yet no study has explored the underlying drivers of political and economic change at this site. This volume presents an overview of the political and economic histories supporting emergent elites and how they constructed power at Gordion during the Iron Age (1200-300 BCE). Based on geochemical and typological analysis of nearly 2000 Late Bronze Age to Hellenistic ceramic samples, the volume contextualizes this primary dataset through the lens of ceramic production, consumption, exchange and emulation. Synthesizing site data sets, the volume more broadly contributes to our understanding of the pivotal role of groups and their economic, social, and ritual practices in the creation of complex societies.
