When Indian University--now Bacone College--opened its doors in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1880, it was a small Baptist institution designed to train young Native Americans to be teachers and Christian missionaries among their own people and to act as agents of cultural assimilation. From 1927 to 1957, however, Bacone College changed course and pursued a new strategy of emphasizing the Indian identities of its students and projecting often-romanticized images of Indianness to the non-Indian public in its fund-raising campaigns. Money was funneled back into the school as administrators hired Native American faculty who in turn created innovative curricular programs in music and the arts that encouraged their students to explore and develop their Native identities. Through their frequent use of humor and inventive wordplay to reference Indianness--"Indian play"--students articulated the (often contradictory) implications of being educated Indians in mid-twentieth-century America. In this supportive and creative culture, Bacone became an "Indian school," rather than just another "school for Indians." In examining how and why this transformation occurred, Lisa K. Neuman situates the students' Indian play within larger theoretical frameworks of cultural creativity, ideologies of authenticity, and counterhegemonic practices that are central to the fields of Native American and indigenous studies today.
For years, I prayed for a closer walk with God. My answer was the Scripture, to whom much is given, much is required. Some may view this implied responsibility as a tempting invitation to become complacent, but I beg to differ. In fact, I declared it as His Vision Statement for my family. Its Godly wisdom to get a vision and make it plain. Therefore, I knew it was a wise decision. I wanted more of Him and no enemy in hell was going to stop me, and He knew it. For this journey to be effective, The Flesh had to remain in restraints with the Holy Spirit in possession of the key. During the initial assignment, I quickly learned, there was No Room for Doubt. At this level, He put an end to childs play or, as we refer to it as, the baby Christian stage, and opened the door to grown folks business. Proper ID was required of me to enter this level, and upon entrance, per Him, my beauty would be my weapon and the words out of my mouth were His prophesy. More often than I can recall, He sent me on special assignments that were to take place for, Forty Days and Forty Nights with very strict rules. To activate each assignment, I had to, Heed, Discern and Respond to His voice. As I continued on my journey- and reached a point where I needed more, as promised, He blessed me with a fresh anointing along with an elevation in both the Spiritual and the natural. As you will see, God gave me specific directions to reach true intimacy with Him. As I share with you some of my journey, I invite you to take Him out the box and seek His intimate place and purpose for your life so that Hes able to give you specific instructions for your life as well.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's example of self-sacrificing discipleship has for over fifty years inspired Christians around the world in both their resistance to evil and their devotion to Jesus Christ. Yet for some readers--particularly those who suffer trauma, abuse, and other forms of violence--Bonhoeffer's insistence on self-sacrifice, on becoming a person for others, may prove more harmful than liberating. For those already socialized into self-abnegation, uncritical applications of Bonhoeffer's teachings may reinforce submission, rather than resistance, to evil. This study explores Bonhoeffer's understandings of selfhood and spiritual formation, both in his own experience and writings and in light of the role of gender in psycho-spiritual development. The central constructive chapter creates a mediated conversation between Bonhoeffer and these feminist psychologists on the spiritual formation of survivors of trauma and abuse, including not only dimensions of his thinking to be critiqued from this perspective but also important resources he contributes toward a truly liberating Christian spirituality for those on the underside of selfhood. The book concludes with suggestions regarding the broader relevance of this study and implications for ministry. The insights for spiritual formation developed here provide powerful proof of Bonhoeffer's continuing and concretely contextualized relevance for readers across the full spectrum of human selfhood.
