Dr. Roy Harris is a gentleman, a scholar and a writer, and a sculptor to presidents, celebrities and kings, but he introduces himself as "just an ol' cowboy." That may be because Roy "cowboyed" all over the West for nearly 50 years. Roy gives us a peek at what his life was like as a young, gregarious and highly-spirited cowboy in the “old†west and his reflections as a wise and well-seasoned, 82-year-old scholar. In this book Roy shares his unending love of horses, art, and life-long learning presented through his humorous and thought-provoking one-liners, inspirational poems and illustrative stories.
Drawing on a comparative case study of three countries--the U.S., the U.K. and the Netherlands--The Myth of Mob Rule explores when and with what consequences crime becomes a politically salient issue.
The authors study the Jacobian $J$ of the smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $r-1$ with affine model $y^r = x^r-1(x + 1)(x + t)$ over the function field $mathbb F_p(t)$, when $p$ is prime and $rge 2$ is an integer prime to $p$. When $q$ is a power of $p$ and $d$ is a positive integer, the authors compute the $L$-function of $J$ over $mathbb F_q(t^1/d)$ and show that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds for $J$ over $mathbb F_q(t^1/d)$.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Five Presidents and The Kennedy Detail comes an “insightful and beautifully told look into the life of one of the most public and admired first ladies” (Publishers Weekly)—Betty Ford. Betty Ford: First Lady, Women’s Advocate, Survivor, Trailblazer is the inspiring story of an ordinary Midwestern girl thrust onto the world stage and into the White House under extraordinary circumstances. Setting a precedent as First Lady, Betty Ford refused to be silenced by her critics as she publicly championed equal rights for women, and spoke out about issues that had previously been taboo—breast cancer, depression, abortion, and sexuality. Privately, there were signs something was wrong. After a painful intervention by her family, she admitted to an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. Her courageous decision to speak out publicly sparked a national dialogue, and in 1982, she co-founded the Betty Ford Center, which revolutionized treatment for alcoholism and inspired the modern concept of recovery. Lisa McCubbin also brings to light Gerald and Betty Ford’s sweeping love story: from Michigan to the White House, until their dying days, their relationship was that of a man and woman utterly devoted to one another other—a relationship built on trust, respect, and an unquantifiable chemistry. Based on intimate interviews with her children, Susan Ford Bales and Steven Ford, as well as family, friends, and colleagues, Betty Ford is “a vivid picture of a singularly influential woman” (Bookpage).
Starting from the premise that children learn better when their learning community respects their families and cultures, this thought-provoking resource shows what it means—and what it takes— to include today’s diverse parents in their children’s learning. Moving readers away from out-of-date practices that can potentially marginalize and devalue the cultural assets of families, the authors provide practical, ready-to-use strategies to help schools re-envision the meaning of parental involvement and engagement. Based on the research and K–12 teaching experience of three educators, chapters address contemporary issues such as the absent parent, homework, vulnerable populations, limitations of current school-based family programs, and pedagogies of hope. “Framed by the work of critical pedagogues, such as Freire, Bourdieu, and Noddings, the authors skillfully guide educators toward disrupting fossilized educational practices while building confianza, cariño, y respeto (trust, loving care, and respect) with culturally and linguistically diverse families. This book fills a critical need and a step forward in rehumanizing education in the 21st century.” —Maria R. Coady, University of Florida “In this book Herrera and Barko-Alva invite educators to reframe and re-imagine traditional, top-down, school-centered parent involvement, and propose a new paradigm that centers family engagement as locally informed, assets-based relationship-building (‘radical kinship’) and as a process of mutual accommodation. As parent involvement has become a centerpiece of school reform, this book is a must-read for all educators, including administrators.” —Ester de Jong, University of Florida; president of TESOL International Association (2017–2018)
Now in paperback, this vivid and often beautifully written account of the realities of diabetes (Chicago Tribune) is essential reading for diabetics and their friends and families. This is her candid and exquisitely written account of how the disease directly affects the choices she makes every day, in every aspect of her life, from food and exercise to career and family. What sets this apart from other testimonies about living with an illness is Roney's remarkable willingness to reveal the usually hidden emotional consequences of her affliction: erosion of her self-esteem, feelings of vulnerability, the influence on her sexual choices, and heightened awareness of mortality. Full of wisdom, humor, and practical advice, Sweet Invisible Body will be welcomed by diabetics and their friends and families who have never before had a spokesperson as articulate, honest, and insightful as Lisa Roney.

In recent years, British drug policy has undergone a transformation: tackling 'drug-driven' crime through criminal justice interventions has arguably become the central priority and focus. The 'criminal justice turn', as the authors refer to current UK drugs policy, is based on three simple and linked assumptions: drug-driven property crime is a major driver of local area crime rates, especially in deprived neighbourhoods; the criminal justice system can be used to target these drug-motivated offenders and direct them into treatment; and treatment can lead to significant reductions in their offending. Tough Choices: Risk, Security and the Criminalization of Drug Policy explores a series of questions about the 'criminal justice' turn in British drugs policy, from why it happened at all to what led policy to unfold in the way that it did, by analyzing policy documents and over 200 interviews conducted with key players in the policy development and implementation process. At the practice level, the authors explore how the strategic vision of the drug-crime 'problem' has shaped the ways in which drug-using offenders are identified, targeted and managed - in other words, why the implementation of the Drug Interventions Programme on the ground has taken the forms that it has. This is addressed through a detailed examination of practice in three local areas. Both the emergence of this new policy direction and its implementation in practice can best be understood as part of a wider transformation in governance in which risk-based thinking has become central to the ways in which we seek to address our contemporary insecurities. The book is based on a 30-month ESRC-funded research project on the Drug Interventions Programme and draws on the extensive empirical data generated during the project.
