The authors examine identity strategies of middle-class couples who come under pressure of over-indebtedness. Based on biographical interviews collected in a qualitative panel study in three waves, they explore the question of how identity is worked on in the couple and how identity changes when social decline threatens. The theory-generating analysis brings out patterns of coping with over-indebtedness and self-placement described along the notions of 'continuity', 'modification' and 'moratorium'. Similarly, they explore how lifeworlds are constructed in and with over-indebtedness as a couple. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Based on in-person interviews and online fieldwork with US Marines, Friended at the Front explores the new media habits, attitudes, and behaviors of troops on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, and some of the complications that emerge in their wake. The book pays particular attention to the way US troops use Facebook and YouTube to narrate their experiences to civilian network members, to each other, and, not least of all, to themselves. After she reviews evolving military guidelines for social media engagement, Silvestri explores specific practices amongst active duty Marines such as posting photos and producing memes. Her interviews, observations, and research reveal how social network sites present both an opportunity to connect with civilians back home, as well as an obligation to do so—one that can become controversial for troops in a war zone. Patients with cancer can suffer from a bewildering variety of neurologic signs and symptoms. The neurologic symptoms are often more disabling than the primary cancer. Symptoms including confusion, seizures, pain and paralysis may be a result of either metastases to the nervous system or one of several nonmetastatic complications of cancer. The physician who promptly recognizes neurologic symptoms occurring in a patient with cancer and makes an early diagnosis may prevent the symptoms from becoming permanently disabling or sometimes lethal. This monograph, an update of the first edition published in 1995, is divided into 3 sections. The first classifies the wide variety of disorders that can cause neurologic symptoms the patient with cancer, discusses the pathophysiology of nervous system metastases, the pathophysiology and treatment of brain edema and the approach to supportive care of common neurologic symptoms such as seizures, pain, and side effects of commonly used supportive care agents. The second section is devoted to nervous system metastases, addressing in turn, brain, spinal cord, meningeal and cranial and peripheral nerve metastases, describing clinical symptoms, approach to diagnosis and current treatment. The third section addresses several nonmetastatic complications of cancer and includes sections on vascular disease, infections, metabolic and nutritional disorders, side chemotherapy, radiation and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The final chapter addresses paraneoplastic syndromes.The book is intended for practicing oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists as well as internists who treated patients with cancer. Our attempt was to write a book that would assist oncologists in understanding neurologic problems and neurologists in understanding oncologic problems. The book is also intended for physicians training to specialize in any of the above areas. It includes a practical approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with neurologic disease who are with known to have cancer or in whom cancer is suspected.

This essay will look at the different tracking systems in the United States of America and in Germany and compare these systems and approaches. Which principles underlie the tracking approach and which functions does it aim to fulfill? Schools, as a mirror of our society, are one of the major institutions in everyone’s life to implement structures and mechanisms to support the already existing social conditions. Our society can be described as a meritocratic model in which positions are distributed according to talent, effort and achievement. Within our schools, these distribution processes can best take place following a well-structured curriculum and guidance through teachers and educational counselors. "A school is run by and for the society, and, hence, it may implement any kind of selection the society considers desirable. Because the school’s curriculum represents the skills, knowledge, and values considered essential to the society’s welfare, a student’s ability to master this curriculum represents an ideal test of his capacity to take responsibility in society" (Rosenbaum 1976). Accordingly, schools are not only places of opportunity but should also fulfill selection requirements of the society. Not everyone can become a doctor or judge, therefore, schools encourage students to choose their educational courses according to their potential and aims. "Most people know that selection processes operate in different stages of their lives, but they don’t know how selection restricts their opportunities in far-reaching ways" (Rosenbaum 1976).
