It is never possible to return literally to times and events of the past. Even places revisited will not be the same as they were. But we can, at least to some extent, go back in our minds. In trying to capture some of the past and record for posterity my lifetime of adventures, I find that my memory has been stretched more than I thought possible. The mind is a funny thing, and time is slippery stuff, but someone has said that we remember more than we think we do; that years after the fact, one day things fall into place and we say, "Ah yes, I remember that well.
Linda Loan Thi Baer was born Nguyen Thi Loan in 1947, in the small village of Tao Xa, Thai Binh, North Vietnam. Her father was killed during a Viet Minh attack in 1951. Her mother remarried a wealthy practitioner of Chinese medicine who was also a war widower. Their family relocated to South Vietnam during the mass exodus of 1954, where they were forced to move constantly due to economic, political, and military conditions. They eventually settled near Vung Rau, south of Saigon. Loan left home at the early age of thirteen to seek work at various menial jobs in Saigon to help her family and to escape the physical abuse of her stepfather. After she turned sixteen, she became a club dancer and a black-market dealer. She met and married an American Air Force officer in 1968 and later followed him to the United States. She was naturalized and became an American citizen in 1973. While raising two sons and a daughter, she obtained her GED and attended many college courses. Linda graduated first in her class at cosmetology school in 1982. She received her cosmetology license from the state of South Carolina. In 1986, she opened her own business, Linda B. Hair and Nail Salon. In 2015, the salon was renamed Elegance by Linda B. She still owns and operates it at the time of this book's publication. Full of love, heartache, and humor, Linda's unique storytelling will have you laughing and crying, eager for more.
A young journalist covering the fall of Saigon A desperate woman willing to sacrifice to save her child Thousands of children awaiting rescue An ex-Marine physician devoted to their care... Together, they discover the meaning of love in the midst of despair. Mel Ames isn’t someone who believes in fate. In fact, she isn’t sure she believes in anything—except her own wits, her powers of observation and her pen. After covering antiwar demonstrations and political stories as an undergraduate at Columbia University, she talks her way into an assignment as a stringer for Newsweek and boards a plane bound for Saigon. She keeps her hair short and her shirts loose. In her right pocket she stows her notepad and a ballpoint pen; in the left, a pack of Marlboros that she empties every day. She also keeps a low profile, as much as she can as a young woman in an Asian war zone. People trust her: bar girls in the noisy clubs that line the teeming alleys of the city; shopkeepers; Navy lieutenants running river operations in the Delta; and South Vietnamese army officers who talk to her over a beer and a cigarette. She sees the war through their eyes, takes her notes back to the room she rents above a tea shop and types her stories. By 1975, Vietnam is under her skin. Her pulse beats to the singsong rhythm of its language. But in the mounting panic and confusion of impending loss as Saigon is about to fall, Mel knows it is time to go. But she also knows that she has one more story to write—a story that will change not only the lives of the thousands of children in Vietnamese orphanages who need to be rescued, but her own life as well.

Art Myers is a Viet Nam veteran with memories. In 2005 he and his wife Linda traveled to Viet Nam with a group led by a psychotherapist who works with veterans affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). From the Mekong Delta in the south, to Hanoi in the north, it was a life-changing journey. Art's story is not unusual. He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps in 1968, a radio repairman stationed at Da Nang during the Tet offensive. He saw only one day of combat, but that day affected every aspect of his life for 35 years. Many veterans suffer from their memories of their time at war. They may bury them, or deny them, or run from them, or act out in other areas of their lives. Alcoholism, drug addiction and suicide rates are higher than average, as are failed relationships and chronic unemployment. Art decided to return to Viet Nam, to overlay the memories of the young man during a terrible time with those of a man in late middle age. It was a good choice for him - and for his family. About the book Art says, "I hope that talking about this journey of healing - and how it has changed me will help other veterans and their families. The idea of helping even one other veteran stop the nightmares and gain some peace made my story worth sharing.

Vietnam - Im Going! is the story of a young WAC assigned to Vietnam. It starts with her excitement upon receiving orders and continues with a detailed description of daily living in a combat zone. Readers will be able to follow her through the year while experiencing life as she experienced it from missing clean towels to being blasted out of bed by incoming rockets. She wrote many detailed letters to her mother and they are recorded here in their original form as they were written. She describes among other things, the war as she saw it from her office window, nights spent in the bunkers, chopper rides and the difficulties of obtaining needed items. She also describes never ending heat, the red mud and dust and the bugs that were everywhere. Readers will be caught up in this story wondering what will happen next and find it hard to stop reading. The story has a mostly positive viewpoint since she was a volunteer and so much wanted to serve her country in a combat zone.
This is a comprehensive grammar of the Hills Karbi variety spoken predominantly in the Karbi Anglong districts. Karbi belongs to the Trans-Himalayan (Tibeto-Burman) family but its exact phylogenetic status has remained unclear. By providing a diachronically-oriented functional analysis of all structural levels of Karbi, this grammar offers a reference work that provides a thorough account of this language. The data in this grammar come from fieldwork that was primarily carried out in the district capital of Diphu although the corpus includes recordings of speakers from all over the two Karbi Anglong districts. This corpus is freely available both as fully glossed text in Himalayan Linguistics (Konnerth and Tisso 2018) and as original media files in ELAR (SOAS University of London). Now also including a glossary, this grammar is a thoroughly revised version of the 2014 dissertation of the author, which won the 2015 Pāṇini Award of the Association for Linguistic Typology (ALT). In this revised version, a few new sections have been added and numerous other sections have been thoroughly updated.
