The book is an inspirational biography of a man who was a "catalyst" for small business success and community growth. ====================================================== .He was a visionary who enjoyed building small businesses in rural areas .He joined with others to strengthen the "spirit" of village life .This is a life story that spans the generations from 1921 to the present and includes his World War II experience .He had a strong commitment to "giving back to the community" ======================================================== This is the story of George Tucker and his life commitment to building small businesses in rural areas. The Village of Oriskany Falls, New York, was where for almost 40 years he nurtured multiple small businesses to support this village potential as a retail "hub." He became Mr. Rural Renewal, refurbishing the buildings on Main Street. Citizens of the area describe George as a catalyst for change and community improvement. As one citizen notes: "When things shut down people wondered what was going to happen to the village but George kept the it active by keeping business running." He engaged others to work with him to reshape and carry out his vision. As a local Historical Society member stated: "When George makes a commitment to getting something done, others join with him to make it happen." George's special ability in these areas give us cues about how to become successful in small businesses while actively caring about the community in our daily work.
Given the current context of the experience of migration on schools in England and Europe, and the competing policies and approaches to social integration in schools, there is a need to understand the connection between language development and social integration as a basis for promoting appropriate policies and practices. This volume explores the complex relationship between language, education and the social integration of newcomer migrant children in England, through an in-depth analysis of case studies from schools in the East of England. The authors set this evidence against the background of policy debates in the wider international setting, including a critical discussion of assumptions underlying national narratives of mainstreaming and assimilation. In the light of an absence of national guidelines for appropriate practice in schools, the authors outline a model of inclusive pedagogy for English as an additional language (EAL) and a framework of home-school communication to promote effective EAL parental engagement in schools.
Madison County became the hub of West Tennessee in the 20th century. Now major highways and rail lines traverse the county and its seat, Jackson. Three railroad companies and industry spawned by the railroads, such as the cotton mill town of Bemis, provided the main sources of employment during the 1900s. As job opportunities abounded, the population grew. Images of America: Madison County features the industrial development, business history, and lives of those people who were touched by this tremendous growth in Jackson and the countys outlying communities during the 20th century.
Language Learning provides an introduction to language development that differs from existing books in that it traces language and cognitive development (together with the associated debates) from babyhood, through the school years of middle childhood and adolescence, into adulthood and the world of work. Increasingly, the global trend is towards learning to speak, read and write more than one language. Language Learning is a comprehensive book that includes descriptions and discussions of learning more than one language sequentially and simulataneously. The only book to look at language with a lifelong perspective, it is ideal as an introductory student text. Each chapter contains ideas and suggestions for students to follow-up and begin their own small scale investigations into language development.

Valentine Chirol was a unique figure on the world stage in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As Foreign Editor of "The Times of London" from 1899 until 1912, a newspaper then unrivalled in scope and influence, he not only reported on some of the key moments in world history but used his considerable influence to shape them. This was the man referred to by the Chancellor of Germany, Count von Bulow, as "one of the most dangerous enemies" of the German Empire. Valentine Chirol played a singular part in alerting the world to the dangers of conflict as war clouds gathered over a fast modernizing world. A committed imperialist, Chirol travelled tirelessly thoughout the British Empire and supervised an outstanding team of foreign correspondents posted from Tokyo to Tangier, Berlin to Johannesberg. He explained the reasons for wars from South Africa to China, and analysed revolutions in Teheran, Constantinople and St Petersburg. Taken altogether there is no doubt that his voice impinged on the self-selected world of nineteenth century diplomacy. His sharp eye and insightful comments, coupled with his insider status, called the powerful to account and helped change the atmosphere in which foreign policy decisions were taken. In this wide-ranging biography, Linda Fritzinger paints a skilful portrait of a man at the heart of the greatest events of his period. Including new sources and extracts from Chirol's own elegant and skilful writing, "Diplomat without Portfolio" provides a remarkable view of world history at the dawn of the twentieth century.

What does the Bible say about women's roles in the church? With pros and cons on either side of a heated, ongoing debate, no definitive conclusions have emerged. This book furnishes you with a clear and thorough presentation of the two primary views on women in ministry so you can better understand each one's strengths, weaknesses, and complexities. Each view--egalitarian (equal ministry opportunity for both genders) and complementarian (ministry roles differentiated by gender)--is represented by two contributors. This revised edition of the book brings the exchange of ideas and perspectives into the traditional Counterpoints format. Each author states his or her case and is then critiqued by the other contributors. The fair-minded, interactive Counterpoints forum allows you to compare and contrast the two different positions, and to form your own opinion concerning the practical and often deeply personal issue of women in ministry. The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. Counterpoints books address two categories: Church Life and Bible and Theology. Complete your library with other books in the Counterpoints series.

The Starr Piano Company, based in Richmond, Indiana, quickly became one of the largest piano manufacturers in the United States during the 19th century. In 1915, the Starr Piano Company opened a recording division, Gennett Records, that led to a dynamic change in the music industry and American culture. Gennett embraced the vastly under-recorded genres of jazz, blues, and country music in the 1920s. They recorded artists who were groundbreakers and innovators in both popular and vernacular music, including Louis Armstrong, Charley Patton, Gene Autry, Hoagy Carmichael, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Uncle Dave Macon, and Jelly Roll Morton, often for the first time. The company, like many others, suffered a steep decline in the sale of their pianos and records due to the Great Depression, but the music recorded at Gennett continues to reach new generations and influence musicians as they discover it on reissues and streaming media services.
Every generation experiences its own excitement on discovering the great era of European Romanticism. Few have enjoyed as fine an account of one of its defining moments as Linda Kelly’s The Young Romantics. First published in 1976, it was instantly acclaimed as a small classic. In the best tradition of belle-lettres, it managed to evoke a sweep of literary history without the tax on time or eye-sight required by the door-stopper biographies of following decades. As Graham Greene wrote to the author: ‘I have been reading with delight The Young Romantics – I admire it for its brevity and the narrative skill which keeps so many characters moving on their parallel or intersecting lines year by year.’ To have written about one of the great figures of the French Romantic revolution with such novella-like compactness would have been a feat. To have embraced all of them in this way was prodigious. Richard Holmes, doyen of Romantic biographers, noted in a review: ‘To recapitulate the celebrated affairs between Vigny and Marie Dorval, Marie Dorval and George Sand, George Sand and Alfred de Musset, Hugo and Juliette Drouet, Madame Hugo and Sainte-Beuve, Sainte-Beuve and Hugo, requires more dexterity than I possess. Suffice it to say that Linda Kelly manages skilfully and not unkindly and that though the “romantic triangle” is much in evidence, geometry has yet to invent the polygon to which these emotional intricacies of domestic Parisian life under Louis-Philippe’s reign conform.’
The Native American tribes of what is now the southeastern United States left intriguing relics of their ancient cultural life. Arrowheads, spear points, stone tools, and other artifacts are found in newly plowed fields, on hillsides after a fresh rain, or in washed-out creek beds. These are tangible clues to the anthropology of the Paleo-Indians, and the highly developed Mississippian peoples. This indispensable guide to identifying and understanding such finds is for conscientious amateur archeologists who make their discoveries in surface terrain. Many are eager to understand the culture that produced the artifact, what kind of people created it, how it was made, how old it is, and what its purpose was. Here is a handbook that seeks identification through the clues of cultural history. In discussing materials used, the process of manufacture, and the relationship between the artifacts and the environments, it reveals ancient discoveries to be not merely interesting trinkets but by-products from the once vital societies in areas that are now Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, the Carolinas, as well as in southeastern Texas, southern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana. The text is documented by more than a hundred drawings in the actual size of the artifacts, as well as by a glossary of archeological terms and a helpful list of state and regional archeological societies.
