2019 Finalist for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the CAA In Race Experts Linda Kim examines the complicated and ambivalent role played by sculptor Malvina Hoffman in T?he Races of Mankind series created for the Chicago Field Museum in 1930. Although Hoffman had training in fine arts and was a protégé of Auguste Rodin and Ivan Meštrovi?, she had no background in anthropology or museum exhibits. She was nonetheless commissioned by the Field Museum to make a series of life-size sculptures for the museum’s new racial exhibition, which became the largest exhibit on race ever installed in a museum and one of the largest sculptural commissions ever undertaken by a single artist. Hoffman’s Races of Mankind exhibit was realized as a series of 104 bronzes of racial types from around the world, a unique visual mediation between anthropological expertise and everyday ideas about race in interwar America. Kim explores how the artist brought scientific understandings of race and the everyday racial attitudes of museum visitors together in powerful and productive friction. The exhibition compelled the artist to incorporate not only the expertise of racial science and her own artistic training but also the popular ideas about race that ordinary Americans brought to the museum. Kim situates the Races of Mankind exhibit at the juncture of these different forms of racial expertise and examines how the sculptures represented the messy resolutions between them. Race Experts is a compelling story of ideological contradiction and accommodation within the racial practices of American museums, artists, and audiences.

In 1788, Adam and Elizabeth Peck followed the Holston River from Virginia into east Tennessee and settled in what would become Mossy Creek. Utilizing the waterway, the Pecks' gristmill thrived within a growing community. The outbreak of the Civil War brought the Battle of Mossy Creek on December 29, 1863. During the next century, zinc mining, the establishment of Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary (now Carson-Newman University), and the town's inclusion as a stop on the new railroad ushered a steady flow of people to this picturesque region of promise. In 1901, Mossy Creek joined the Carsonville and Frame Addition communities to be incorporated as Jefferson City. The Tennessee Valley Authority began work in 1940 on nearby Cherokee Dam, generating both jobs and tourism.

A family's love is the best kind of love. It is the first love we learn through our parents and siblings. God express his love for us when he gave his only son to save us. Life is a challenge; sometimes the choices and chances we take are wrong, and then there are the ones we learn from that makes us strong. Don't be so quick to give up on one another. You never know when the road will curve in your life. Family or not, be kind and respectful to one another, 'cause in the blink of an eye, things can change. Stop holding on to hate and letting hate take over. Jeanette made the choice to leave and get help for her addiction. She took the chance on putting it off until later. We aren't the judge of one another, so we cannot say or assume she was too late to turn around. What took place between her and God is unknown. Losing Jeanette was a very hard chapter in our lives. Raising her four daughters with so much sadness, hurt, and anger wasn't easy for us. We managed to keep all four girls within the family; holding on to God's grace, we gave plenty of love and patience to raise these four beautiful girls. No one can predict what will happen in our lifetime. We will lose loved ones and friends along the way. Whether it's by a violent crime, accident, sickness, or old age, it will cause deep pain. These four girls lost their mother at a very young age and with no father to lean on. Now they are grown and raising families of their own. A couple's love is a special bond between two people, but to find a special person is to have a bond with God. You can pray to God day and night, but if you aren't living right, he won't hear you. No one is perfect, but to do your best by living by his word, and he will overlook the rest. He loves us unconditionally that is why he laid down on the cross for us. I myself had given up on love because of so many broken promises and failed relationships. I felt this late in life, love wasn't in the stars for me, so I turned it over to God and left it there. And just when I thought all was lost, there he was, an old friend whom I once had the sparkles of a thousand stars for but never expressed it. To me, the time we lost touch had never happened, about four years or so. He was still that tall, handsome, warm-spirited gentleman I met years ago. We continue being friends like no time had passed until he said six words that will be forever imbedded in my heart, "You know I like you, right?" From there, a beautiful relationship was started.

Our problem is that we don't realize the character we possess or we won't stay in his Will (on the wheel) long enough for that character to be developed.

Writing in 1749, Benjamin Franklin called for the creation of an educational institution in Philadelphia in which academic pursuits would be devoted to practical application for the greater good. That institution became the University of Pennsylvania. And while Franklin may not have anticipated it, since they first stepped onto campus the women of Penn have taken his concept of enlightened service and made it their own. This volume, published to mark the 125th anniversary of the first women students at Penn, depicts some of the struggles and successes of the University's female pioneers. While girls were part of Franklin's early affiliated Charity School, society at the time dictated their exclusion from more advanced study. But as the nineteenth century progressed, higher education for women gained ground in America and at Penn. By the 1920s, 17 different academic programs admitted women, and by the 1950s, the numbers of women on campus had increased dramatically—as students, as faculty, and as members of the University's board of trustees. Women were becoming an essential part of the Penn community. In his autobiography Franklin recounts his correspondence with a young friend "on the propriety of educating the female sex in learning and their abilities for study. He was of opinion that it was improper and that they were naturally unequal to it. I took the contrary side." In 2001 Penn has proven Franklin's early instinct correct, and what was once a trickle of women scholars has become a flood. Immersed in the egalitarian Penn of today, female students might take their advantages for granted. They are actively creating their own history, but they are also continuing a valuable collective tradition—Franklin's daughters all.
