Winner of the Plutarch Award for the Best Biography of 2013 A mesmerizing and essential biography of the modernist poet Marianne Moore The Marianne Moore that survives in the popular imagination is dignified, white-haired, and demure in her tricorne hat; she lives with her mother until the latter's death; she maintains meaningful friendships with fellow poets but never marries or falls in love. Linda Leavell's Holding On Upside Down—the first biography of this major American poet written with the support of the Moore estate—delves beneath the surface of this calcified image to reveal a passionate, canny woman caught between genuine devotion to her mother and an irrepressible desire for personal autonomy and freedom. Her many poems about survival are not just quirky nature studies but acts of survival themselves. Not only did the young poet join the Greenwich Village artists and writers who wanted to overthrow all her mother's pieties but she also won their admiration for the radical originality of her language and the technical proficiency of her verse. After her mother's death thirty years later, the aging recluse transformed herself, against all expectations, into a charismatic performer and beloved celebrity. She won virtually every literary prize available to her and was widely hailed as America's greatest living poet. Elegantly written, meticulously researched, critically acute, and psychologically nuanced, Holding On Upside Down provides at last the biography that this major poet and complex personality deserves.
At the forefront of modernism, Marianne Moore (1837-1972) both influenced and was shaped by the rich aesthetic climate of her age - and she consistently looked beyond her own medium for inspiration. Based extensively on unpublished archival material and replete with reproductions of paintings, photographs, and other examples of modernist art, this is the first book to explore Moore's work in its interdisciplinary context - to show us why Moore believed that "language is a special extension of the power of seeing."" "Through a thorough examination of her published and unpublished work, Leavell describes Moore's formal solutions to the overthrow of nineteenth-century conventions and examines the ethical implications of this revolution. She shows that Moore shared the personal values espoused by Stieglitz, Kandinsky, and other visual artists, particularly in their radical resistance to aesthetic, social, and spiritual hierarchies. Finally, Leavell deals with challenges that confronted American artists after World War I: to preserve artistic expression in an industrial age and to define a distinctly American art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Linda Anderson explores Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, from her early days at Vassar College to her last great poems in Geography III and the later uncollected poems. Drawing generously on Bishop's notebooks and letters, the book situates Bishop both in her historical and cultural context and in terms of her own writing process, where the years between beginning a poem and completing it, for which Bishop is legendary, are seen as a necessary part of their composition. The book begins by offering a new reading of Bishop's relationship with Marianne Moore and with modernism. Through her journeys to Europe Bishop, it is also argued, learned a great deal from visual artists and from surrealism. However the book also follows the way Bishop came back to memories of her childhood, developing ideas about narrative, in order to explore time, both the losses it demands and the connections it makes possible. The lines of connections are both those between Bishop and her contemporaries and her context and those she inscribed through her own work, suggesting how her poems incorporate a process of arrival and create new possibilities of meaning

The late nineteenth century saw a re-examination of artistic creativity in response to questions surrounding the relation between human beings and automata. These questions arose from findings in the 'new psychology', physiological research that diminished the primacy of mind and viewed human action as neurological and systemic. Concentrating on British and continental culture from 1870 to 1911, this unique study explores ways in which the idea of automatism helped shape ballet, art photography, literature, and professional writing. Drawing on documents including novels and travel essays, Linda M. Austin finds a link between efforts to establish standards of artistic practice and challenges to the idea of human exceptionalism. Austin presents each artistic discipline as an example of the same process: creation that should be intended, but involving actions that evade mental control. This study considers how late nineteenth-century literature and arts tackled the scientific question, 'Are we automata?

Clinical Nurse Leaders Beyond the Microsystem: A Practical Guide, Fourth Edition is a core resource for CNLs which imparts the competencies necessary to lead improvement teams, analyze data, and ensure delivery of quality, safety, and value-based care in any healthcare setting.
Initiating and Sustaining the Clinical Nurse Leader Role, Third Edition illustrates the influence of clinical nurse leaders on care coordination, health promotion, and high-performance inter-professional care teams. The Third Edition will move beyond the 2007 American Association of Colleges of Nursing CNL White Paper and incorporate the CNL Competencies introduced in October 2013. This text presents a bold agenda for CNL practice, one that promotes value in the transformation of clinical care redesign. The Third Edition will cover the following: • Moving beyond the triple aim toward the quadruple aim • Increased emphasis on a new healthcare environment where CNLs practice • The clinical value compass for improving care • Care transitions and the CNL • Health policy engagement and advocacy • Population health and management • Inter-professional collaboration • Resource mindfulness • Project management tools, scope, design, and evaluation • Incorporating the 5Ps and models for improvement • Exemplars of CNL impacts across care settings • CNL certification, professional membership, and residency programs value • Vision for CNLs in 2020
Initiating and Sustaining the Clinical Nurse Leader Role: A Practical Approach serves as a practice guide Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs) using the ten assumptions for preparing the CNL, the CNL roles, and the end of program competencies. The CNL designs, implements, and evaluates client care by coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by the health care team, including licensed nurses, technicians, and other health professionals. This text provides real world tools and processes and includes chapter objectives, summaries, articles, case studies, tools, notes from the field, interviews with CNLs, CNL students, employers of CNLs and educators.
She also sets out how these roles served both whites and blacks; reminds the reader of Carver's personal and circumstantial reasons for not demurring; and reaffirms, in particular, his impact on individuals (prominent among whom was Southern radical Howard Kester--viz. Anthony Dunbar's Against the Grain, above). An intellectually satisfying study and no less an affecting biography.
