Hannah West may look like any other funky, artistic, street-smart Seattle twelve-year-old, but there's more to her than meets the eye. In addition to being a detective, adopted, and having a sixth sense for bus schedules, Hannah's also homeless, a fact that she and her single mom deal with by moving from one house-sitting job to the next. This time, they're taking care of a houseboat on the tranquil waters of Lake Washington. Before long, someone starts making waves, and before you can blink an eye, Hannah West is on the case. Hannah's not sure who is dumping chemicals in the water—or why—but one thing's for sure: if Hannah doesn't get to the bottom of things soon, they'll all be in deep water!
Hannah West—twelve-year-old adopted Chinese daughter of Maggie West and aspiring detective—is back on the scene in a third original adventure. Someone is kidnapping canines, and it’s got the dog-crazy denizens of funky Fremont—where Hannah and her mom have landed their latest house-sitting gig—all riled up. At first, Hannah’s in heaven in dog-filled Fremont, but when her dog-walking business marks her as a suspect in the dognappings, she knows that this is one case that she’s got to get to the bottom of—for her own sake, as well as for the sake of her canine companions!
Linda Johns is for the birds – in the best possible way. She began by taking in the occasional wounded or orphaned birds that came her way, and soon neighbours found that she was a welcome source of advice – and sanctuary – for the strays they found, but couldn’t shelter. Today she shares her home with an ever-shifting population of birds – some of whom have moved in to stay. In For the Birds, she writes lyrically about the natural world around her studio, and with verve and humour about the feathered characters who visit or share her home. Each of them has a distinct personality and Linda Johns’ gift for storytelling – in the James Herriot tradition – brings them so vividly alive that they practically fly off the page. Here, among many others, are: Bubble and Squeak, the roosters, who like nothing better than cuddling up on a friendly lap for an evening snooze; Basho, the Japanese quail, whose birthday is celebrated with the reading of festive haiku verses; Chip, the grackle, who sometimes breaks into nest-building frenzies that incorporate the strangest items; and Desmond, the gentle pigeon, who has faithfully courted his “mate,” Molly, through years of persistent rebuffs. Full of wonderfully funny and affectionate stories – and enhanced by Linda Johns’ black-and-white brush drawings of many of the birds – this is a book suffused with knowledge and love of nature in all four seasons.
Hannah West is not your ordinary twelve-year-old. She’s artistic, full of street smarts, and best of all, she’s a budding detective. She and her mom are technically homeless, but thanks to a series of house-sitting jobs, they always have a place to stay. In this first book in a lively series, Hannah and her mom—who adopted Hannah from China when she was a baby— move into their latest new place: a high-rise apartment in Seattle’s swanky Belltown towers. And just as they’re getting settled, someone tries to steal a valuable piece of artwork from one of their new neighbors! Quick as a wink, Hannah is on the trail of a thief who is wreaking havoc on Seattle’s thriving art scene! Armed with her keen eye and ever-present sketchbook, no detail gets past Hannah unnoticed....
This is the story of a spirited woman and the surprisingly close relationships she develops with her lively household of feathered friends. Linda Johns' humorous and vivid narrative, In the Company of Birds, will provoke wonder and laughter as she describes her avian companions, which include two roosters, two fancy pigeons, a duck, and a grackle.

Language acquisition is a contentious field of research occupied by cognitive and developmental psychologists, linguists, philosophers, and biologists. Perhaps the key component to understanding how language is mastered is explaining word acquisition. At twelve months, an infant learns new words slowly and laboriously but at twenty months he or she acquires an average of ten new words per day. How can we explain this phenomenal change? A theory of word acquisition will not only deepen our understanding of the nature of language but will provide real insight into the workings of the developing mind. In the latest entry in Oxford's Counterpoints series, Roberta Golinkoff and Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek will present competing word acquisition theories that have emerged in the past decade. Each theory will be presented by the pioneering researcher. Contributors will include Lois Bloom of Columbia University, Linda Smith of Indiana University, Amanda Woodward of the University if Chicago, Nameera Akhtar of the University of California, Santa Cruz and Michael Tomasello of the Max Planck Institute. The editors will provide introductory and summary chapters to help assess each theoretical model. Roberta Golinkoff has been the director of The Infant Language Project at the University of Delaware since 1974. For the past decade she has collaborated with Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek of Temple University to solve the question of language acquisition in children.
