The first monograph to analyze the Surrealist gesture of photographic appropriation, this study examines "found" photographs in three French Surrealist reviews published in the 1920s and 1930s: La R?lution surr?iste, edited by Andr?reton; Documents, edited by Georges Bataille; and Minotaure, edited by Breton and others. The book asks general questions about the production and deployment of meaning through photographs, but addresses more specifically the construction of a Surrealist practice of photography through the gesture of borrowing and re-contextualization and reveals something crucial both about Surrealist strategies and about the way photographs operate. The book is structured around four case studies, including scientific photographs of an hysteric in Charcot's clinic at the Salp?i? hospital, positioned as poetry rather than pathology; and one of the first crime-scene photographs, depicting Jack the Ripper's last victim, radically transformed into a work of art. Linda Steer traces the trajectory of the found photographs, from their first location to their location in a Surrealist periodical. Her study shows that the act of removal and re-framing highlights the instability and mutability of photographic meaning an instability and mutability that has consequences for our understanding both of photography and of Surrealism in the 1920s and 1930s.

Performing Arts and Gender in Postcolonial Western Uganda

Focusing on runyege, the main traditional performance genre of the Banyoro and Batooro people, this book explores the entanglement of traditional music, dance, and theater with gender and postcolonialism in Western Uganda. Drawing on archival research and extensive fieldwork in the regions of Bunyoro and Tooro, Linda Cimardi examines the connection between traditional performing arts and gender in western Uganda. The book focuses on runyege, the main genre of the Banyoro and Batooro people, exploring its different components of singing, instrument playing, dancing, and acting and identifying their complex relationships to gender models and expressions. Today mainly performed at Ugandan school festivals and by semiprofessional ensembles, repertoires like runyege adhere to stage conventions that have developed over several decades. Some of these conventions are powerful devices allowing the actors involved (performers, teachers, students, adjudicators, and audiences) to collectively shape an image of local culture grounded in a gender binary that is perceived as traditional. At the same time, stage conventions are exploited by some performers to negotiate their gender identities and expressions in unconventional ways, thus challenging hegemonic gender models. Moving between analysis of historical recordings, oral accounts, and present-day fieldwork data and experiences, the book engages in a comprehensive analysis of the postcolonial entanglement of arts and gender. They were up early to be at the slaughtering place in town where they will soak up the blood of freshly slaughtered cattle with whatever they can find. This blood will be what they eat today, along with rotting fruits and vegetables obtained from the town garbage. At night, they will sleep in ditches and fields. Their parents died of AIDS, or malaria. Their living relatives are already caring for large households on less than $1.00 per day income. There is no place for them to go. There is no welfare, food stamps or Child Protective Services. A couple from California travel there as representatives of their church as part of a cultural exchange program. They stay with a Pastor and his family. This Pastor's dream is to build an orphanage for at least some of these hopeless children. The couple stays for a month, meet people, see the children, and go home with no expectations of ever returning. The Pastor fasted and prayed that they would tell the children's stories, and that they would come back.... TWINOMUJUNI (pronounced Twin ohm zhu nee) Means "we have a Savior" in the Rukiga language.

The characters in this book were people that lived ordinary lives in present-day America, but after taking a trip to England wonder if reincarnation does exist as they remember, through dreams, the parts they played in Henry VIII's court. The story places you right at the heart of it all as these characters ask themselves, "am I who I think I am?" It sure does make one think, and wonder if there was another "me" in another life. Truly Creative Writing - A Startling Story Within the first few pages, I forgot I was reading. This story of a repeating dream, of returning home to where you have never been, the intersection of personalities before words -- this is the fun of Past Imperfect. I was scared and delighted. Thayer's story is fresh, a historical and eerie thriller. I hope this book finds more readers. It would make a great movie!
