Next, it delves more specifically into the unique physiological and psychological changes and challenges many older adults face. Each body system is covered separately, and related mental health issues (including cognitive changes and developmental disabilities) are addressed in depth. Throughout, the text emphasizes health promotion and education: positive steps that nurses can take to help older adults live a healthier and more productive life. The author also provides tools and resources readers can use when they assume leadership and management roles, and stresses the importance of continued professional development.

The terms pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics tend to be used interchangeably, and a precise, consensus definition of either remains elusive. Pharmacogenetics is generally regarded as the study of genetic variation that gives rise to differing response to drugs, while pharmacogenomics is the broader application of genomic technologies to new drug discovery and further characterization of older drugs. Pharmacogenetics considers one or at most a few genes of interest, while pharmacogenomics considers the entire genome. Much of current clinical interest is at the level of pharmacogenetics, involving variation in genes involved in drug metabolism with a particular emphasis on improving drug safety. This new book presents leading-edge research in this dynamic field.
Career Development: A Human Resource Development Perspective second edition offers an integrated framework for career development within the Human Resource function. It goes beyond conventional interventions, providing an interdisciplinary perspective. The authors explore challenges associated with contemporary careers and how a complication of contextual factors, individual attributes, and support mechanisms have and will influence career development. As with the previous edition, McDonald and Hite bring together the strengths of both theory and practical application, offering an integrated framework for career development. New to this edition are: Cases to support further reflection and problem-solving. Supplementary material for each chapter that includes discussion questions and further resources. An enhanced chapter on ethics and social justice. A concluding chapter which explores ongoing trends to expand the career development conversation. This book will help prepare human resource development students, scholars, and practitioners to develop and maintain successful career development programs, and to foster more innovative research that advances the discourse, as well as address their own professional interests.
Offering an overview of existing research and drawing upon the authors’ own study of approximately 3,000 students and knowledge workers, this book documents how careers have fundamentally shifted over the past five decades and offers crucial insights into what these shifts mean for employers and their management strategies.

Nisei Soldiers Break Their Silence is a compelling story of courage, community, endurance, and reparation. It shares the experiences of Japanese Americans (Nisei) who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting on the front lines in Italy and France, serving as linguists in the South Pacific, and working as cooks and medics. The soldiers were from Hood River, Oregon, where their families were landowners and fruit growers. Town leaders, including veterans' groups, attempted to prevent their return after the war and stripped their names from the local war memorial. All of the soldiers were American citizens, but their parents were Japanese immigrants and had been imprisoned in camps as a consequence of Executive Order 9066. The racist homecoming that the Hood River Japanese American soldiers received was decried across the nation. Linda Tamura, who grew up in Hood River and whose father was a veteran of the war, conducted extensive oral histories with the veterans, their families, and members of the community. She had access to hundreds of recently uncovered letters and documents from private files of a local veterans' group that led the campaign against the Japanese American soldiers. This book also includes the little known story of local Nisei veterans who spent 40 years appealing their convictions for insubordination. A perfect storm of factors are brewing that will redefine dependent care in the coming decades. Delayed marriage and parenthood, longer life-spans, lower birthrates, and the health policy shift to informal caregiving have drastically increased the number of employees whose mental and physical health suffers due to an inability to balance work, childcare, and eldercare. Employers also feel the pinch as this inability to balance a myriad of demands is negatively impacting their bottom line. Something’s Got to Give is a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by employees and employers as they try to respond to this dramatic demographic change. Linda Duxbury and Christopher Higgins utilize an original and rich data set–gathered from 25,000 Canadians who are employed full time in public, private, and not-for-profit organizations--to demonstrate the urgent need for workplace and policy reforms and support for employed caregivers. The authors’ timely work provides practical advice to managers and policy-makers about how to mitigate the effects of employee work-life conflict, retain talent, and improve employee engagement and productivity. Business and labour leaders as well as employees who truly care about their careers and industries can’t afford to ignore the solutions that Something’s Got to Give thoughtfully provides.
Ernest Hemingway: A Literary Life includes new research on the best-known of the posthumous publications: A Moveable Feast, 1964 (and the 2009 A Moveable Feast: The Restored Edition); Islands in the Stream, 1970; and The Garden of Eden, 1986. Linda Wagner-Martin provides background and intertextual readings—particularly of the way Hemingway’s unpublished stories (“Phillip Haines was a writer”) and his fiction from Men Without Women and Winner Take Nothing interface with the memoir. The revised edition also highlights and provides background on Hemingway’s treatment of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein, his life in Paris in the 1920s, and his connection to the poetry scene there—putting this in conversation with Mary Hemingway’s edits of A Moveable Feast. The new chapters also illuminate the reception of Islands in the Stream and a new way of understanding the role of gender and androgyny in The Garden of Eden. On a whole, the book draws from extensive archival research, particularly correspondence of all four of Hemingway’s wives.
This book explores elements of team dynamics and interactions that block or enable effective ideation. The author investigates interpersonal dynamics, inhibitors of collaboration and boosters of ideation efficiency that govern the ability of a team to generate new and valuable ideas. Where it is widely accepted that teams are a necessity in the creative process, this book highlights the inconsistency in terms of quality and reliability of creative output when looking at teams. Why do some teams struggle, and others succeed in innovating? This book offers a valuable resource for those interested in the qualities and interventions that can impact the ideation potential of a team.
