When Kelsey and her friends find an abandoned pug puppy, it looks like another case for the Curious Cat Spy Club. But shortly thereafter, Kelsey's mother goes missing—possibly in the line of duty as an Animal Control officer—and it's up to the CCSC to discover what happened. Mama is frazzled because the family has just moved into a new house in a foreign country and she needs to find the dishes, not the Christmas ornaments. But ten-year-old Jack and four-year-old Maria know what is truly important about celebrating Christmas and get some help from a tree with a mind of its own.
My dark classroom was usually a bug-infested storage closet under the stairwell or an unheated supply room. The faculty preferred segregating me from the normal classroom, as I was viewed as a distraction that might hinder the studies of other students. Year after year, a list of specialists voiced the hopeless, unanimous diagnosis, “She'll be totally blind before she is 21 and she needs to be institutionalized.” Then I met Dr. Albert Sutton, who assured I could realize my dream of obtaining a driver's license by training my eyes to see. After working with his pioneering concept of neurological therapy, I became one of many successful cases where people with legal blindness could now drive a car.
Albert is listening carefully as his teacher, Miss Dixie, talks about friendship. Albert knows he has friends, but he does not have a ship! The beautiful illustrations help children understand about friendship and, like Albert, realize that they each have a "Friend Ship" in their heart.
Friendsville is a small town with a rich, varied history. It had its beginnings in the late 1790s, when several related families with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) moved from North Carolina into what is now Blount County and established a Friends meeting about 12 miles from Maryville, the county seat. The families built a gristmill and a sawmill and later sold town lots. The Friendsville Post Office was established in 1850, and the town was incorporated in 1953. Friendsville has played a remarkable role in the history of the United States. The Friends, who did not support war or slavery, operated several stops on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, helping runaway slaves, freed African Americans, and southern residents who wanted to fight for the North or move north to avoid the war. The area is now noted for its marble production, with Friendsville pink marble gracing such buildings as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Bierstadt was the great recorder of the American western landscape. He was the first artist with both the technique and the talent to convey the powerful visual impact of western space and to capture the scale of America's mountains. This magnificent volume provides a full appreciation of his talent as an artist."--Amazon.
