Curriculum reform, changing the canon, multiculturalism, feminism, and political correctness: these issues have multiple labels, bestowed on different sides of a debate that began in the academy but that has become a matter of civic interest. Most of the well known books on these issues -- including bestsellers by Alan Bloom and Dinesh d'Souza -- come from the far right. They claim that feminists and cultural critics such as Lillian Robinson have taken over our universities. Robinson counters that the right is so frightened at losing its strangle-hold on the culture that it misrepresents a foothold as hegemony.

This study is an exploration of US Cuban theatrical performances written and staged primarily between 1980 and 2000. Lillian Manzor analyzes early plays by Magali Alabau, Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas, María Irene Fornés, Eduardo Machado, Manuel Martín Jr., and Carmelita Tropicana as well as these playwrights’ participation in three foundational Latine theater projects --INTAR’s Hispanic Playwrights-in-Residence Laboratory in New York (1980-1991), Hispanic Playwrights Project at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa, CA (1986-2004), and The Latino Theater Initiative at Center Theater Group's Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles (1992-2005). She also studies theatrical projects of reconciliation among Cubans on and off the island in the early 2000s. Demonstrating the foundational nature of these artists and projects, the book argues that US Cuban theater problematizes both the exile and Cuban-American paradigms. By investigating US Cuban theater, the author theorizes via performance, ways in which we can intervene in and reformulate political and representational positionings within the context of hybrid cultural identities. This book will of great interest to students and scholars in Performance Studies, Transnational Latine Studies, Race and Gender studies.

Here, this pioneer family, along with friends and neighbours, rides out the Depression as one by one their children grow up, and we share their struggles, their joys and their triumphs. This story, the people, the incidents that happened, and the places are true and are taken from the memoirs of the people involved. That is why the author calls it ‘creative non-fiction’ even though it is written as fiction.

Not since Victor Heiser published in1936 “An American Doctor’s Odyssey,” an account of his life as a horse-and-buggy doctor, has the story of a medical career—this time shared by physician spouses—been so well told as in this volume by the Drs. Dunmores. The reader is taken on a journey more exciting than a detective tale as the doctors make their rounds in their office, in the hospital, and not in-frequently in patient’s homes. A house call, which many people now consider an unproductive relic of the past, may yield as many clues to the root causes of illness as elaborate testing procedures. Adopting the tactics of, say Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple might be the only way to restore a severely depressed patient to robust health. The Dunsmores worked to forge useful links between academic medicine, with which they kept regularly in close touch, and the practical aspects of supplying the best possible health care to the public. In their encounter with patients, other doctors and co-workers, the patient is always the focus of attention at first hand, not through intermediaries, as so often the case today when practices are managed by business men and the insurers.
