This book explores the nature of creativity in engineering and technology, and how it relates to creativity in art or science. Lienhard has for ten years done a twice-weekly radio show, carried on about 35 NPR stations, consisting of 3-minute essays on technology. He uses the substance of selected segments of his radio program to create a continuous narrative presenting his insights on technological creativity. This book has the same title as his radio program, to further draw the attention of his one million listeners.
Modern is a word much used, but hard to pin down. In Inventing Modern, John H. Lienhard uses that word to capture the furious rush of newness in the first half of 20th-century America. Since the early days of Christianity a tension has existed between the authority of the Bible and the authority of the Church. This has been further heightened by the question of Bible translation: How does the Word stand firm and yet continue to speak to a changing Church? Joseph Lienhard, a specialist in Early Christianity, examines the evolution of the Christian canon by casting this question against the life of the early Christians. Among the topics treated are the Christian use of Jewish Scriptures, the Catholic and Protestant Old Testaments, the emergence of the New Testament, the struggle for the right interpretation of the Scriptures, the problem of inspiration, and modern attempts to explain the Church's New Testament canon theologically. The book questions the use of historicist methods of interpretation and appeals to the Rule of Faith as the right norm for interpreting the Scriptures in the Church. Joseph T. Lienhard, SJ, earned his doctorate at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) with two dissertations on Paulinus of Nola and Marcellus of Ancyra. His work is in patristics. He taught at Marquette University from 1975 to 1990, and since 1990 has been at Fordham University, where he is also chair of the department of theology. He has published Ministry in the Message of the Fathers of the Church series and other titles.

In How Invention Begins, Lienhard reconciles the ends of invention with the individual leaps upon which they are built, illuminating the vast web of individual inspirations that lie behind whole technologies. He traces, for instance, the way in which thousands of people applied their combined inventive genius to airplanes, railroad engines, and automobiles. As he does so, it becomes clear that a collective desire, an upwelling of fascination, a spirit of the times--a Zeitgeist--laid its hold upon inventors. The thing they all sought to create was speed itself. Likewise, Lienhard shows that when we trace the astonishingly complex technology of printing books, we come at last to that which we desire from books--the knowledge, the learning, that they provide. Can we speak of speed or education as inventions? To do so, he concludes, is certainly no greater a stretch than it is to call radio or the telephone an "invention." A productive and highly important branch of Nevari literature is poetry. The songs reflect the thought of the Nevars, their way of life, religious belief, their history and folklore. The greatest possible variety of genres and styles have been included in the present anthology. Most of the songs included, religious hymns as well as folksongs and ballads, are still very popular among Nevars. In order to facilitate reading and consultation, the whole corpus of the songs collected has been grouped into four principle sections, namely Religious Poetry, Songs about Love and Marriage, Epic Poetry, Didactic and Enigmatic Verses. The book contains two appendices. While the first lists the talas and ragas, as they are given in the various anthologies published in Nepal, the Second makes an attempt to transpose two songs into the European system of music. Joseph T. Lienhard, SJ, earned a Dr. theol. habil. at the University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, with two dissertations--on Paulinus of Nola and on Marcellus of Ancyra. He taught at Marquette University from 1975 to 1990. Since 1990, he has been at Fordham University. His works include Paulinus of Nola and Early Western Monasticism, Contra Marcellum: Marcellus Ancyra and Fourth-Century Theology, and a translation of Karl Suso Frank's history of religious orders titled With Greater Liberty: A Short History of Christian Monasticism and Religious Orders. In 2010, a feshschrift, Tradition and the Rule of Faith, was published in his honor.

In this thesis, we investigate the applicability of the shearlet transform for the task of pedestrian detection. Due to the usage of in several emerging technologies, such as automated or autonomous vehicles, pedestrian detection has evolved into a key topic of research in the last decade. In this time period, a wealth of different algorithms has been developed. According to the current results on pedestrian detection benchmarks, the algorithms can be divided into two categories. First, application of hand-crafted image features and of a classifier trained on these features. Second, methods using Convolutional Neural Networks in which features are learned during the training phase. It is studied how both of these types of procedures can be further improved by the incorporation of shearlets, a framework for image analysis which has a comprehensive theoretical basis. To this end, we adapt the shearlet framework according to the requirements of the practical application of pedestrian detection algorithms. One main application area of pedestrian detection is located in the automotive domain. In this field, algorithms have to be runable on embedded devices. Therefore, we study the embedded realization of a pedestrian detection algorithm based on the shearlet transform.

We live in the information age, but the concept of information is still not defined objectively and physically.
