The Road takes you on Lacey's journey and leaves you wanting a deeper understanding of the significance of each character to Lacey, why some love her unconditionally while others hate her innocence. The Road for Lacey Rutledge begins with her first memory at two years old and maps the path she travels within a small town in Western North Carolina. Raised by her parents, grandparents and extended family, as was common in the 30s, her story is filled with colorful characters who unknowingly help establish the woman she becomes. Her Pappy is a man deeply devoted to the things of God and captures Lacey's complete affection, thus causing her to search for her own spiritual destiny. However, having that pure heart of a child, but faced with a world of prejudiced views, Lacey finds herself being singled out by a town full of preconceived ideas and religious bigotry, fighting for what is right and against those things that are wrong in the eyes of God.
The story of Parnelli Jones is the story of American auto racing. Jones grew up in Torrance, a tough city on the edge of Los Angeles. A teenage love affair with cars turned into a full-blown relationship with adult speed, running hardscrabble races across the country: from jalopies at Carrell Speedway to the dirt track at Ascot Park to sprint cars in the Midwest to the stock circuit in the South. By today's standards the racing was unbelievable in its recklessness. His life was on the line in every race, but his courage was impenetrable. In 1963 Parnelli qualified for Indy and won. In 1964 he was almost killed at the same race. In 1967 he was eight miles from victory when his car broke down, leaving him unable to finish. In 1968 he was the lion in winter, battling equipment and overwhelming odds. This is a gritty, American tale of survival and the unlikely birth of a savage and spectacular sport.
Colonialization has never failed to provoke discussion and debate over its territorial, economic and political projects, and their ongoing consequences. This work argues that the state-based activity of planning was integral to these projects in conceptualizing, shaping and managing place in settler societies. Planning was used to appropriate and then produce territory for management by the state and in doing so, became central to the colonial invasion of settler states. Moreover, the book demonstrates how the colonial roots of planning endure in complex (post)colonial societies and how such roots, manifest in everyday planning practice, continue to shape land use contests between indigenous people and planning systems in contemporary (post)colonial states.
Her life may be in shambles, but Ellie Foreman can’t resist a good mystery. Even one that risks far more than her career. WHO IS ELLIE FOREMAN? If you’re just meeting me, hello. I’m Ellie Foreman and I produce documentary films and videos in Chicago. People tell me I’m too curious for my own good, because I sometimes investigate crimes and murders as well. The problem is that in each of the 6 thrillers, the suspense ramps up and puts me in life-threatening situations. Or, as has happened, my daughter’s or my father’s life is jeopardized. I cherish my family and promised them that in the future I would walk away from a case if anything remotely smelled dangerous. I tried. I really did. It didn't work. I can’t understand why they don’t believe me. "A masterful blend of history, politics, and suspense. Publishers Weekly It might be because of the 6 novels in this Box Set. A perceptive novel from our favourite chronicler of the dilemmas of modern family life. Catherine and Caroline, Toby and Mark were globetrotting siblings: British 'diplo-brats', whose childhood homes lay in Italy or Israel, France or Washington DC – wherever their father was posted at the time. But all that was years ago. Now Catherine is approaching middle-age, married to a life of cheeseparing selflessness looking after young offenders on a chilly organic farm; Mark is a prim supermarket executive, Caroline a wealthy Kensington wife, and Toby – well, Toby is a problem. The joker in the pack. He always was. Amid growing tensions, marriage-fatigue and unspoken resentments, the apparent tragedy of Toby's disappearance jolts his sisters and brother into making angry, anxious journeys: from California to Flanders, back in time and into their own hearts.
In 1924, civic leader and developer John P. King promoted Fort Worth's Oakhurst neighborhood as "country life for the city man." He appealed to those who wanted space for artesian water, cool breezes, gardens in a hillside setting, and a utopian atmosphere for their children. King--the creator of a confectionery company known for "King's candies for American queens"--made a park-like neighborhood in a part of Riverside just a few miles from downtown Fort Worth. Thoughtful landscape design and charming architecture are hallmarks of this all-American neighborhood, beloved for its small-town, community feel well into its 90th year.

Grahame Kings life as an artist began with his mastery of the new art of colour reproduction as a photolithographic colour etcher in Melbourne in the 1930s. At the same time, study at the National Gallery Art School with George Bell assisted his development as a painter. After war service and travels abroad, King returned to Melbourne with his wife, the sculptor Inge King. The two held a number of joint exhibitions of paintings and sculptures in Australia throughout the 1950s and then, from c.1962 Grahame King turned his attention, increasingly, towards the art of lithography becoming a master in this field of printmaking. He has also devoted himself to promoting the art of lithography and printmaking generally through the Print Council of Australia. He is often called Australias patron saint of printmaking. The book examines his seven decades working as an artist in Melbourne and is lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions throughout.

What leads the human body to get the message that it needs to store fat and what leads the human body to get the message that it needs to burn fat?" In a dynamic, fresh approach to weight loss, acclaimed nutritional biochemist Dr. Libby Weaver discusses the nine factors that cause us to either lose or gain weight. These factors include: calories, stress hormones, sex hormones, liver function, thyroid function, gut bacteria, insulin, alkalinity, and emotions. Let's face it - for many people it is not a lack of education that leads them to polish off a packet of chocolate biscuits after dinner, but their biochemistry and emotions. Accidentally Overweight explores the role of these two factors in fat storage and optimal wellness.Accidentally Overweight was born out of the 14 years Dr. Libby spent at university, her strong scientific background in both nutrition and dietics and her PhD in biochemistry. Libby has thousands of stories about how, what she calls the 'calorie equation' (how much you eat versus how much you move) is not the only determinant of our body shape and size. At the end of the day, if it was truly as simple as the calorie equation, everyone would be trim, taut and terrific, and there'd be no health consequences because of excess body weight. This is not just another diet book - it is a life-changing way of understanding your body and health.

Maine has always played a rich and varied role in the art of photography. For hundreds of years, photographers, like other artists, have made their way to Maine to capture the natural beauty and human culture of the state. So, too, have many photographers come from Maine, and many contributions by Mainers have been made to the medium. Maine in Photography is the first comprehensive overview of the history of photography in the state. Providing basic knowledge of the most important people and institutions to have promoted photography, this volume also studies the ways in which photography has informed the understanding of the social and cultural history of Maine. Beginning with the earliest daguerreotype portraits of the 1840s, this history traces the growth of the medium—emphasizing key contributions, such as the Stanley brothers’ invention of the dry plate process—through to the present. Key topics addressed throughout the book include the importance of photography in documenting labor and economic life, the close relationship between photography and the growth of tourism, and the role of Maine photographers in advancing the medium as a fine art form. Published in conjunction with the Maine Photo Project, this is a unique and timely addition to the body of work on the importance of Maine to American art.
Newfoundland writer Libby Creelman finds the emotional heart of her characters — characters continually seeking, and breaking, connections with others, though they rarely know it. A girl welcomes cruelty into her life in an attempt to get closer to a father living with chronic pain. A woman obsessed with her lineage draws her family into inheriting more than they bargained for. A young boy, burdened by the adults with whom he keeps company, arrives at the end of a brief sailing trip directing their futures as well as his own. A woman returns home to spend a weekend with old high school friends and at last understands something about her mother that had been trailing her for years. "Suddenly her voice turns soft, almost tender. But you know what you used to say at bedtime, don't you? You used to hold my face in your hands, and say, You're the best mommy in the universe.'' '... She wants us to savour the image of me holding her face, cherishing her, reading her mind." These are stories about dislocation and about home -- about leaving it, returning to it, needing it, rejecting it -- crafted in a style that is controlled, yet sympathetic.
Are current leadership roles and relationships appropriate in a rapidly changing world? Do we need to rethink key assumptions about leaders and leadership? Are you confident about the appropriateness and effectiveness of your chosen leadership styles and behaviours? These are questions facing leaders today and Understanding Leadership by Libby Nicholas and John West-Burnham can help find the answers, with an approach that is neither normative nor prescriptive but rather exploratory and developmental. Applying research and case studies from inside and outside the educational canon, Libby and John challenge prevailing orthodoxies and invite readers to reflect on their personal understanding as the basis for translating theory into practice. All leadership behaviour is based on a number of fundamental personal assumptions about the nature of human relationships and the basis on which human organisations function. Understanding Leadership helps leaders make their implicit understanding explicit and so informs and aids development of professional practice. Effective leaders develop and grow by understanding their personal mindscape the mental map with which they make sense of the world and developing it through reflecting, exploring, testing and questioning. The usefulness of any map is determined partly by its scale and partly by the information it depicts. As leaders develop, so their personal mental maps become more sophisticated and more detailed. The purpose of this book is to help leaders understand and refine their maps through reflective self-awareness facilitating the journey to understanding leadership. Leadership is fundamentally concerned with the complexity of human relationships, performance, engagement and motivation leadership has to be seen as relational. Leadership involves emotional engagement and sophisticated interpersonal relationships. The idea of a hero-leader single-handedly transforming a school is perhaps not a particularly useful or relevant vision of effective leadership for today. Libby and John encourage leaders to arrive at their own working definition of effective leadership and analyse how the myriad of carefully examined models and case studies might apply in their own school context. The eight chapters are underpinned by the following themes, questions and points of reflection: why leadership?; creating a preferred future leading change; leadership as a moral activity; learning as the core purpose of school leadership; leading through collaboration and cooperation; building capacity sharing leadership; leading through relationships; and leadership and personal resilience. High performance, effective leadership can be truly transformational. Leadership cannot be taught; it has to be learnt. It could be argued that school leadership is primarily concerned with learning: the leader's own, and facilitating that of the children. Questioning, interrogating and analysing ideas and practice are fundamental to that learning process. Libby Nicholas and John West-Burnham prompt leaders to do just that. Suitable for school leaders at all levels head teachers, principals, assistant and deputy heads, middle leaders aspiring to senior roles and in all educational settings. The book will also be of interest to education system leaders chief education officers and directors of education and, indeed, anyone concerned with developing effective school leadership; for example, governors and trustees, CPD trainers, coaches and mentors.
