Li Er, whose innovative works of fiction have earned the admiration of scholars and critics—and a passionate fan base of readers—is one of China’s most prominent writers. This landmark publication of his Coloratura, a tour de force of literary innovation, marks the first translation of the author’s novels into English. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Chinese Civil War, Coloratura revolves around the mysterious Ge Ren, whose story is told by three narrators and a host of other voices. Who was Ge Ren really? Just about the only thing anyone can agree on is that he is dead. But how he died, and who he was when alive, are less than certain. Was Ge Ren a hero, a Nationalist or Communist, a poet, translator, scholar, or spy—or some combination of all these identities? And how much of his story is merely fanciful “coloratura” nonsense? As different factions fight for control of China, Ge Ren traverses the political and intellectual life of the country, managing to affect countless lives. Years later, in the present day, his final surviving descendant, the intriguing “compiler” of the novel, pieces together the stories of her enigmatic ancestor from a patchwork of narrators, reliable or otherwise, and historical documents, real or invented. But readers also will wonder if she has an agenda of her own. The search for Ge Ren takes us from Chairman Mao’s stronghold at Yan’an to a barren People’s Commune, and then farther afield, with excursions into Russia, Japan, and even a small town in England. Many of the characters and incidents are actual historical figures and events, woven seamlessly into the fictional storyline. Told with swashbuckling brio and painstaking historical detail, Coloratura is both an illuminating journey through twentieth-century Chinese history and a profound exploration of the elusive nature of truth.

The new book "Mian of Yin and Yang" can be said to be the longest preparation work of Xiao San. Before Douro started writing, this book "Mian of Yin and Yang" had been conceived with Douro. Just because the setting of Douro was made first, Douro was created first. At that time, Yin Yang Mian completed the outline first, and was temporarily named Dionysus. In the year of creating Douluo, Xiao San kept collecting all kinds of materials for Yin and Yang Corona, perfecting his outline and setting.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications, ADMA 2005, held in Wuhan, China in July 2005. The conference was focused on sophisticated techniques and tools that can handle new fields of data mining, e.g. spatial data mining, biomedical data mining, and mining on high-speed and time-variant data streams; an expansion of data mining to new applications is also strived for. The 25 revised full papers and 75 revised short papers presented were carefully peer-reviewed and selected from over 600 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on association rules, classification, clustering, novel algorithms, text mining, multimedia mining, sequential data mining and time series mining, web mining, biomedical mining, advanced applications, security and privacy issues, spatial data mining, and streaming data mining.
Winner, 2023 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Our relationship with things abounds with paradoxes. People assign value to objects in ways that are often deeply personal or idiosyncratic yet at the same time rooted in specific cultural and historical contexts. How do things become meaningful? How do our connections with the world of things define us? In Ming and Qing China, inquiry into things and their contradictions flourished, and its depth and complexity belie the notion that material culture simply reflects status anxiety or class conflict. Wai-yee Li traces notions of the pleasures and dangers of things in the literature and thought of late imperial China. She explores how aesthetic claims and political power intersect, probes the objective and subjective dimensions of value, and questions what determines authenticity and aesthetic appeal. Li considers core oppositions—people and things, elegance and vulgarity, real and fake, lost and found—to tease out the ambiguities of material culture. With examples spanning the late sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries, she shows how relations with things can both encode and resist social change, political crisis, and personal loss. The Promise and Peril of Things reconsiders major works such as The Plum in the Golden Vase, The Story of the Stone, Li Yu’s writings, and Wu Weiye’s poetry and drama, as well as a host of less familiar texts. It offers new insights into Ming and Qing literary and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as the intersections of material culture with literature, intellectual history, and art history.
The old Taoist priest, who was exposed by people and was struck by lightning, smiled wryly, and his wrinkled old face showed a trace of sincerity: "Anan, I am doing this for your own good. Even if I am a liar, I have never thought of cheating you. For the sake of a colleague, I am kind ... Speaking of faces, the old man nagged endlessly

This book systemically presents the latest research findings in fuzzy RDF data modeling and management. Fuzziness widely exist in many data and knowledge intensive applications. With the increasing amount of metadata available, efficient and scalable management of massive semantic data with uncertainty is of crucial importance. This book goes to great depth concerning the fast-growing topic of technologies and approaches of modeling and managing fuzzy metadata with Resource Description Framework (RDF) format. Its major topics include representation of fuzzy RDF data, fuzzy RDF graph matching, query of fuzzy RDF data, and persistence of fuzzy RDF data in diverse databases. The objective of the book is to provide the state-of-the-art information to researchers, practitioners, and postgraduates students who work on the area of big data intelligence and at the same time serve as the uncertain data and knowledge engineering professional as a valuable real-world reference.
This book presents the development of the Chinese Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (CECERS), a culturally appropriate tool for assessing the quality of Chinese preschools. It provides insights into the developmental profile and pedagogical characteristics of Chinese preschools, which have been the main type of children's services in China over the past three decades. The conceptual framework of CECERS is based on cultural contexts and refers to ECERS, an international quality assessment tool for early childhood education (ECE), and combines the essential elements of ECE quality (e.g., teacher-child interactions) with additional components tailored to the situation of Chinese preschools (e.g., group educational activities). A series of studies involving over 200 preschools and 500 classrooms were conducted to ensure the validity and reliability of the CECERS in different areas of China. The content of CECERS has been continuously adapted according to the results of these verification studies. The author also discusses issues related to improving the quality of Chinese preschools and proposes relevant policy recommendations. The book will be an essential read to students and scholars of educational theory and Chinese studies. It will also serve as an interesting reference for cross-cultural scholars in the field of ECE research.
Plant Hormones: Biosynthesis and Mechanisms of Action is based on research funded by the Chinese government’s National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). This book brings a fresh understanding of hormone biology, particularly molecular mechanisms driving plant hormone actions. With growing understanding of hormone biology comes new outlooks on how mankind values and utilizes the built-in potential of plants for improvement of crops in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. This book is a comprehensive description of all major plant hormones: how they are synthesized and catabolized; how they are perceived by plant cells; how they trigger signal transduction; how they regulate gene expression; how they regulate plant growth, development and defense responses; and how we measure plant hormones. This is an exciting time for researchers interested in plant hormones. Plants rely on a diverse set of small molecule hormones to regulate every aspect of their biological processes including development, growth, and adaptation. Since the discovery of the first plant hormone auxin, hormones have always been the frontiers of plant biology. Although the physiological functions of most plant hormones have been studied for decades, the last 15 to 20 years have seen a dramatic progress in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of hormone actions. The publication of the whole genome sequences of the model systems of Arabidopsis and rice, together with the advent of multidisciplinary approaches has opened the door to successful experimentation on plant hormone actions. Offers a comprehensive description of all major plant hormones including the recently discovered strigolactones and several peptide hormones Contains a chapter describing how plant hormones regulate stem cells Offers a fresh understanding of hormone biology, particularly molecular mechanisms driving plant hormone actions Discusses the built-in potential of plants for improvement of crops in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner
