Based on the Palauan-English dictionary by Fr. Edwin G. McManus, S.J. (UH Press, 1977), this revision is designed to be an easily accessible reference for identifying vocabulary items of Palauan, which are often culture bound, semantically rich, and structurally quite complex. Thousands of Palauan entries are new or greatly expanded. Users will benefit from a much wider range of vocabulary, especially in the areas of flora and fauna, Palauan legend, and borrowed words from both English and Japanese. The expanded English-Palauan finder list allows for quick reference to the Palauan equivalents of many English words.
Lieutenant-General Brereton was a long service aviator in the United States Air Force even before the advent of the Second World War, Tough and aggressive he would lead his men and air groups through the Pacific, North Africa and Europe, and saw action in more theatres than any other senior commander. Described by one of his fellow US generals "a cocky, aggressive, intelligent, experienced, pretty damn able commander.", he is a somewhat controversial character. He was in command during four of the most controversial, from an Air Force perspective, episodes of the entire war; the initial destruction of the American aerial assets in the Philippines 1941, the bombing of the oilfields in Ploesti 1943, the flattening of the German defences in Normandy 1944, and the failed attempt to capture bridges across the Rhine by airdrop 1944. His diary is very readable, enlightening and very relevant to the US Air Force effort in all of the major theaters across World War II.

This book is the first work to look at the full range of three centuries of the early modern period in regards to infanticide and abortion, a period in which both practices were regarded equally as criminal acts. Faced with dire consequences if they were found pregnant or if they bore illegitimate children, many unmarried women were left with little choice. Some of these unfortunate women turned to infanticide and abortion as the way out of their difficult situation. This book explores the legal, social, cultural, and religious causes of infanticide and abortion in the early modern period, as well as the societal reactions to them. It examines how perceptions of these actions taken by desperate women changed over three hundred years and as early modern society became obsessed with a supposed plague of murderous mothers, resulting in heated debates, elaborate public executions, and a media frenzy. Finally, this book explores how the prosecution of infanticide and abortion eventually helped lead to major social and legal reformations during the age of the Enlightenment.
A medical novel of the near future. When Jeremiah Murray, M.D., general practitioner, abruptly walks out of his office leaving Patricia Gannon on an examining table and an office full of patients-in-waiting he marked a turning point both in his life and in the world of American medicine. In this stunning and powerful novel, J. Lewis Osler explores the malaise permeating the world of present day medicine and government, a malaise that will eventually erupt into anarchy. The story is told through a cast of powerfully drawn characters: the ever-idealist Jeremiah; John Masterson, the gregarious, persistent, desperate (and finally dead) spokesman for the beleaguered doctors; Dana Morris, the examining room seductress; Claude LaRoche, martyr to AIDS politics; the abortionist Glen Booth; Heidi Bogusch-Perez, third generation M.D. gone bureaucrat; and the orchestrator of disaster, Secretary of Health Affairs, Theodore Billings. Osler's account of the luncheon of the medical malpractice attorneys is a minor masterpiece in itself. All of this is set against a background rife with health service inquisitors rummaging uninvited-and warrantless-through patient's private files, insurance company flaks refusing to discuss best-treatment scenarios, spurious malpractice claims, and a society struggling to hold itself together in the face of the mindless meddling of self-serving politicians. This is, indeed, a novel with a point of view. After reading Black Humor, you will never think about the practice of medicine-or of the welfare state-in the same way again
