This book began in the mid 1970s, after historian and author Evangeline Atwood finished her sixth book on Alaska. Fairbanks Daily News-Miner executive Charles Gray and Ketchikan Daily News publisher Lew Williams Jr. urged her to write a history of Alaska newspaper.
