A Failure to Thrive offers a unique viewpoint on the story of the tainted blood scandal in Canada and how it affected one family and their sick son. It also paints the portrait of an Erin Brockovich–type heroine in Leslie, who fights for justice for those too sick to fight for themselves. The book is a memoir that reads like a nonfiction thriller as we follow Leslie from the day she’s notified that her chronically ill son Jarad contracted hepatitis C from a tainted blood transfusion. From there, she set out to find answers. In her search, Leslie learned of a massive cover-up. Due in part to her tireless research, the court ultimately found that the Canadian Red Cross and government officials, in a move to save money, did not use proven surrogate screening of the blood supply until 1990, nine years after the US instituted their testing. And then they covered it up, even shredding official documents. In the middle of the political and legal drama, there is Leslie and her family. The story cuts back and forth between lawyered-up opponents and Jarad’s slow and horrific decline—at his worst, weighing a mere forty-six pounds at age twelve and only weeks from death. This book is about a Canadian national health tragedy, but it is also a story that crosses borders to anywhere bureaucrats decide how taxpayer dollars will be spent at the expense of public safety. It’s an inside look at backroom government failures and cover-ups; it is also the story of how these failures affected one very sick boy and his family. Leslie Sharp invites readers into her home and shares, with raw honesty, the struggles and triumphs of a family in the face of crisis. We watch Leslie and Peter’s marriage dissolve. We cheer for Leslie when, after their divorce, she reclaims her health, losing over a hundred pounds, and moves to Honolulu, Hawaii, to start over as a small business owner. The story ends on a high note, reporting that a healthy Jarad Gibbenhuck spent his early twenties living in Whistler Village, British Columbia, where he worked for a snowboard outfitter and competed in snowboarding competitions. This year, Jarad turned thirty and moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where he works at a surf and skate shop.

This Element argues that the sheer mass of ceramic material indicates the importance of pottery to Egyptian life. Ceramics form a crucial dataset with which Egyptology must critically engage, and which necessitate working with the Egyptian past using a more fluid theoretical toolkit. This Element will demonstrate how ceramics may be employed in social analyses through a focus on four broad areas of inquiry: regionalism; ties between province and state, elite and non-elite; domestic life; and the relationship of political change to social change. While the case studies largely come from the Old through Middle Kingdoms, the methods and questions may be applied to any period of Egyptian history.

Drawing on extensive field work in Nicaragua and Argentina, as well as public opinion and elite data, Leslie E. Anderson's Social Capital in Developing Democracies explores the contribution of social capital to the process of democratization and the limits of that contribution. Anderson finds that in Nicaragua, strong, positive, bridging social capital has enhanced democratization while in Argentina the legacy of Peronism has created bonding and non-democratic social capital that perpetually undermines the development of democracy. Faced with the reality of an anti-democratic form of social capital, Anderson suggests that Argentine democracy is developing on the basis of an alternative resource – institutional capital. Anderson concludes that social capital can and does enhance democracy under historical conditions that have created horizontal ties among citizens, but that social capital can also undermine democratization where historical conditions have created vertical ties with leaders and suspicion or non-cooperation among citizens.

Written Reliquaries: The resonance of orality in medieval English texts establishes the linguistic component of orality and oral tradition. The relics it examines are traces of spoken performance, artifacts of linguistic and cultural processes. Seven case studies animate verbal acts of making promises, quoting proverbs, pronouncing curses, speaking gibberish, praying Pater Nosters, invoking saints, and keeping silence. The study of their resonance is enabled by a methodological conjunction of historical pragmatics and oral theory. Insights from oral theory enlighten spoken traditions which in turn may be understood in the larger historical-pragmatic context of linguistic performance. The inquiry ranges across broad as well as narrow planes of reference to trace a complex set of cultural and linguistic interactions. In this way it reconstructs relevant discursive contexts, giving detailed accounts of underlying assumptions, traditions, and conventions. Doing so, the book demonstrates that an integrated methodology not only allows access to oral discourse in both Old English and Middle English but also provides insight into the fluid medieval interchange of literacy and orality.
