The prior three editions of this book were extremely well received for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in long-term care administration, and they were also popular as fundamental resources with practitioners as well as for an array of other long-term care practitioners and professions, including housing managers, board members, teachers, students, administrators, owners, and health care professionals who are seeking new directions in the field. This, the fourth edition, has been extensively revised. There is, for example, the fundamental updating throughout to reflect structural and regulatory changes that have been occurring in the field as well as the introduction of recent research findings, evolving ideas, and new practices. In addition, there are new perspectives introduced by nine new chapter authors plus three entirely new chapters: monitoring clinical outcomes, spiritual care, and using information technology. The book is divided into six sections: The Evolution of Long-Term Care; Developing the Organization; Human Resource Management; Optimizing Health Care Outcomes; Creating a Supportive Living Environment; and Creating a Better Future. This new edition also has an additional author, Dr. Leslie Grant, whose seasoned scholarship and visionary leadership will provide important, additional insight for the reader. The ideas presented are intended to provide a better understanding of the long-term care environment and to suggest ways of applying interdisciplinary knowledge for the administrator in this setting.

At most recent count, there are no fewer than forty-five women in Brazil directing or codirecting feature-length fiction or documentary films. In the early 1990s, women filmmakers in Brazil were credited for being at the forefront of the rebirth of filmmaking, or retomada, after the abolition of the state film agency and subsequent standstill of film production. Despite their numbers and success, films by Brazilian women directors are generally absent from discussions of Latin American film and published scholarly works. Filling this void, Brazilian Women's Filmmaking focuses on women's film production in Brazil from the mid-1970s to the current era. Leslie L. Marsh explains how women's filmmaking contributed to the reformulation of sexual, cultural, and political citizenship during Brazil's fight for the return and expansion of civil rights during the 1970s and 1980s and the recent questioning of the quality of democracy in the 1990s and 2000s. She interprets key films by Ana Carolina and Tizuka Yamasaki, documentaries with social themes, and independent videos supported by archival research and extensive interviews with Brazilian women filmmakers. Despite changes in production contexts, recent Brazilian women's films have furthered feminist debates regarding citizenship while raising concerns about the quality of the emergent democracy. In each, a subordinate kills someone in a superior position over them—typically with an object used in their work, be it wiring in an auto shop, a huge sack of coffee, or a blackboard eraser. While these acts (no explanation is ever given by the criminals) clearly have a class-related character, the media and public figures are loathe to admit that class struggle still exists. Their denial of reality creates another thread in this joyful, dark satire: the fumbling of “experts” who mobilize theory after theory in order to analyze what is happening without admitting that the events could have any political content.

Well-known, wealthy novelist, Paul Laszlo is found dead in his luxurious Hollywood Hills mansion, apparently the victim of a suicide. Upon further investigation by LAPD detectives, Joe Mallory and Derek Brooks, the suicide theory is ruled out. A ballistics report indicates Laszlo was murdered; a single gunshot wound to the head. An intense investigation follows, with Diane Laszlo, the victim’s wife, as the prime suspect. The detectives zero-in on Mrs. Laszlo primarily because her first husband died in a mysterious boating accident, leaving her with an insurance settlement of $500,000. In a divorce settlement with her second husband, Diane gained custody of their teen-aged son and a lump sum of $200,000. Further probing into her background, reveals that Mrs. Laszlo was manipulative, a gross opportunist, a woman who would stop at nothing to get what she wants. With greed as her motive, Mallory suspects Diane may have been involved in Laszlo’s death, but the detectives don’t have a shred of evidence to arrest her. The story’s subplot involves the murder of a black prostitute at a Sunset Boulevard motel. This is followed by a raid on an East L.A. apartment where the suspect, Juan Comacho manages to elude the police. Later, Comacho is arrested in a Spanish Harlem bar and extradited back to California by NYPD Det. Brad Shaner. It is here that the two plots intersect. Offering a fresh look, a new perspective on the Laszlo murder, Shaner joins Mallory in reviewing the case file. Viewing autopsy photos, Shaner recognizes Laszlo from a sexual assault arrest made in New York, almost twenty-eight years before. At that time he was known as Paul Barac. As the climax approaches, Mark, Laszlo’s stepson is interrogated. In a tearful confession (told in flashback) the sixteen-year-old boy relates a year of sexual molestation by Laszlo, ending in Mark’s desperate attempt to end it all...by killing his stepfather.

In 1969 the first edition of this book introduced the concepts of statistics and their medical application to readers with no formal training in this area. While retaining this basic aim, the authors have expanded the coverage in each subsequent edition to keep pace with the increasing use and sophistication of statistics in medical research. This fifth edition has undergone major restructuring, with some sections completely rewritten; it is now more logically organized and more user friendly (with the addition of 'summary boxes' throughout the text). It incorporates new statistical techniques and approaches that have made an appearance since the last edition. In addition, some chapters or chapter headings are specifically marked to signify material that is more difficult than the material in which it is embedded - such sections or chapters can be omitted at first reading. Several new chapters have been added . "Associations: Chance, Confounded and Causal?" explains without any formulae the concepts underlying confounding, confidence intervals and p values, and the interpretation of associations observed in research investigations. Another new chapter considers sample size calculations in some detail and provides, in addition to the relevant formulae, useful tables that should give the researcher an indication of the order of magnitude of the number of subjects he or she might require in different situations.

Survey and study background In an effort to gain some answers on the 1ST capital investment (project selection) decision criteria used in practice, a survey was undertaken in 1990 of 80 American, British, Australian and New Zealand companies. A one-page survey form was used that provided 15 possible 1ST investment criteria, a means of indicating whether they are used or not, the percentage of projects to which each criterion is applied, and an overall ranking in terms of total project value for each criterion. The criteria are shown in Table 2.1. The criteria are categorized into financial, management, and development criteria. They were developed, first, through interviews with some 20 chief information officers (CIOs) in Britain and the United States. These CIOs were questioned on what criteria their organizations use in selecting 1ST investment projects, with the aim of developing a full list of the criteria used in practice. Secondly, the criteria and the form were tested and refined in a pilot study with some 12 companies. The criteria used in the survey and listed in Table 2.1 are primary level criteria.
