In West German literature in the 1970s and 1980s bodies functioned not as victims of history nor as allegories for the nation but as sites of contested identities. Focusing on conflicts about identity in present-day Germany and on literary texts in which the body is an aesthetic construct, Leslie A. Adelson reformulates questions of embodiment and historical agency—questions that continue to haunt culture studies in general and German studies and women's studies in particular. Alexander Kluge’s revolutionary storytelling for the 21st-century pivots on the production of anti-realist hope under conditions of real catastrophe. Rather than relying on possibility alone, his experimental miniatures engender counterfactual horizons of futurity that are made incrementally accessible to lived experience through narrative form. Innovative close readings and theoretical reflection alike illuminate the dimensional quality of future time in Kluge’s radical prose, where off-worldly orientation and unnatural narrative together yield new sensory perspectives on associative networks, futurity, scale, and perspective itself. Where do our conventional understandings of health, illness, and the body stem from? What makes them authoritative? How are the boundaries set around these areas of life unsettled in the changing historical and political contexts of science, technology, and health care delivery? These questions are at the heart of Troubling Natural Categories, a collection of essays honouring the tradition of Margaret Lock, one of the preeminent medical anthropologists of our time. Throughout her career, Lock has investigated how medicine sets boundaries around what is deemed "normal" and "natural," and how, in turn, these ideas shape our technical and moral understandings of life, sickness, and death. In this book, nine established medical anthropologists - all former students of Lock - critically engage with her work, offering ethnographic and historical analyses that problematize taken-for-granted constructs in health and medicine in a range of global settings. As Parke says, "the more elusive and impossible the image is to paint, the more it interests me. A painting succeeds for me when it seems as though the light is emanating from inside." Leslie Parke is an artist from upstate New York and a recipient of the Esther and Adolph Gottlieb Grant for Individual Support. Her work has been exhibited in museums in the United States, Israel and Argentina, and is in numerous private and corporate collections.
