In January 1976, it is an excited, but nervous family of four who board a Jumbo jet, to leave England to begin a new life in a small town, on the Persian Gulf in Iran. Adrian, an ex-Royal Naval Officer, thought this new job in Iran would be a chance to earn big money, and although neither parent had wanted to disrupt their children’s education, they thought it was worth the risk, giving them both valuable life experiences, and a chance to see ‘something of the world.’ Once settled in their new home, with the children happily enrolled in an excellent international school, they immediately made friends with like-minded ex-pats, and got involved in an active and well-established social scene, with parties and functions most weekends, and daily trips to their ‘club’ in town, which housed a bar, and swimming pool. Caroline and Alex, having made friends at school, as well as with some local children, who lived in mud huts, in the desert at the end of their road, also seemed happy with their lot, but Laura becomes pregnant, which threatens to disrupt their idyllic lives, and events that followed, appear to have changed Laura’s, once devoted and loving husband’s feelings towards her. But, had Laura changed? And that was why her previously, caring husband didn’t fancy her anymore. How was she to get their relationship back on track, when there were so many exciting distractions and choices which held his attention, which didn’t include her?

Similar entries exist for trade associations and schools of pharmacy associated with the industry and there are two appendices listing small collections of records held and relevant public records. The historical compendium is supplemented by three introductory essays, written by leading academics in the field, outlining the history of the industry and describing the nature and uses of the archival records which it has created. These essays are supplemented by a select chronology of pharmaceutical legislation and a select bibliography of histories relating to the pharmaceutical industry in general. A users guide helps readers understand how the business entries were constructed and is supplemented by a glossary of terms used in this book As such, this book will no doubt prove an invaluable resource to researchers undertaking comparative studies of the pharmaceutical industry, the history of medicine and the retailing of medical drugs.

Task Listening aims to develop the listening skills of students who have had little exposure to authentic spoken English. It is suitable for lower-intermediate and also more advanced students whose listening has been developed primarily as a means to a grammatical or structural end. Each of the twenty-six units consists of a short tape recording and related tasks. The recordings are of people speaking at normal speed in everyday situations. Each unit has as its theme a setting or situation in which listening plays a major part, for example, at an airport listening for flight announcements or at a travel agency being told about different means of transport. In each case, having completed the necessary language work, students listen to the tape and extract the information necessary to complete a simple task, such as labelling a picture or filling in a grid. Related reading and writing tasks are provided as a follow-up to each listening task. Task Listening aims to help students to sift out utterances of relevance and ignore redundant features, a skill vital to efficient listening at all levels of language learning.
