John Hope (1868-1936), the first African American president of Morehouse College and Atlanta University, was one of the most distinguished in the pantheon of early-twentieth-century black educators. Born of a mixed-race union in Augusta, Georgia, shortly after the Civil War, Hope had a lifelong commitment to black public and private education, adequate housing and health care, job opportunities, and civil rights that never wavered. Hope became to black college education what Booker T. Washington was to black industrial education. Leroy Davis examines the conflict inherent in Hope's attempt to balance his joint roles as college president and national leader. Along with his good friend W. E. B. Du Bois, Hope was at the forefront of the radical faction of black leaders in the early twentieth century, but he found himself taking more moderate stances in order to obtain philanthropic funds for black higher education. The story of Hope's life illuminates many complexities that vexed African American leaders in a free but segregated society.

This work is devoted to analyzing three major frames of justice--group justice, individual desert, and life affirmation--and their implications for social policy as well as their reflections in contemporary social policies. Pelton finds that all three frames of justice are reflected in the Bible and, later, the Koran. He contends that there is no evidence in the Bible of a genesis or development from one frame of justice to another. Rather, a sense of justice has existed in the human mind from time immemorial, with the three frames coexisting and manifesting themselves in both inter- and intra-group relations. The prominence of one frame over another at any particular point in history or in a particular geographical location is influenced by a variety of factors, though it is ultimately open to human choice. Pelton compares and contrasts the philosophies of nonviolence and liberalism in regard to the frames, and explores the relationships between principle, sentiment, reason, justice, and policy. He discusses social science's problematic relationship to justice in policymaking--for instance, how scholars have focused more on the effectiveness of policies, largely in terms of statistical outcomes reflecting aggregate data analyses, than on their justice. He goes on to explore in depth how frames of justice give direction to social policies, including those of genocide. Frames of Justice is an outstanding work that analyzes the question of justice and social policy, while simultaneously exploring the notion of desert in religion, philosophy, and legislation--especially within the context of the moral question of the relationship between means and ends--and contrasting it with the principle of life affirmation.

Here is the chronicle of the Anderson family, Post Bellum (Civil War) Scandinavian settlers to America. They were the author’s grandparents and triggered this interesting story of the three following generations over a span of 150 years. The story is compelling, forthright and, indeed quite readable and witty. Grandpa Olander leads the parade of memorable family. His seven offspring included Navy Chaplain, Captain Paul, an exuberant fellow who charted new paths around the world aboard the SS Boise during WW II and emulated St Paul in his post-war missionary work in Greece and Turkey. Author Anderson narrates an unusual family history based on a varied community banking career laced with many collateral and cultural interests in music, travel, church, sailing, camping and gardening. Their multi -9 home- residency to accommodate the author’s career provided lots of color for the many vignettes of their personal lives. Then there are those wonderful three children and five ‘above average’ grandchildren who play an integral role in the family and world. The author’s wife, Claire, is a pleasant and comely – but quiet – supporter of all that activity from her first unusual introduction that led, ultimately, to the altar and many years of marital bliss. That saintly partner introduced the author, nee husband, to quite interesting characters who garnish this story in spades. Those ‘walk-ons’ provide a compelling, and often, humorous backdrop to the ‘larger picture’. Joie de vivre abounds with incredible and diverse photos that follow each chapter. Their composition and captions are well thought out and interesting. Thus, the whole work is a delightful journey of two people in love – hubby Roy and dearest partner, Claire – for over 60 years and still counting.

This unusual work is, in some respects, a sequel to the author's first work, Joie de Vivre, published by Page Publishing in 2016 and was designed to chronicle the author and his dear wife Claire's considerable European travels. Thus, the spectacular photos—in full color—are representative of their visits to Scandinavia, France, Germany, Italy, and Great Britain. Special attention is given to Norway, the home of Claire Andersons forbears; thus the reader will be treated to local scenes throughout the country with special attention given to coastal Norway aboard the cruise ship MS Polarlys on the cruise called Hurtigruten, billed as "The World's Most Beautiful Sea Voyage." Ever the historical bent traveler, Anderson recounts much German history during twin two-week voyages up the Rhine River. On one occasion, they docked overnight in Boppard, and conducted their own walking tour of the city. They were drawn to the glorious twelfth-century St. Severus Cathedral and, fortuitously, "bumped into" Herr Jacobs, the Cathedral organist. He led LeRoy and Claire up to the organ loft and treated them to a performance of Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in E minor." The Andersons' tour to Italy included a nice visit in the glorious Pantheon with its noted oculus and then in Navona Square, walking 'round Bernini's great "Four Rivers" fountain and concluding with glorious and relaxing alfresco dinners at Tre Scalini restaurant.
