It illustrates how these platforms are contributing to Chinese cultural influence, their perceived reputation and obstacles in the region while pursuing a combined approach of culture+, industry+, internet+, and platform+. In considering the multi-layered rise of the China argument, the book considers its growing technological status as an innovative nation through four policy approaches: culture+, industry+, Internet+ and platform+. Other + characterizations include intelligent+ and social+. These + characterizations show how China is rejuvenating, drawing technological knowhow from the region and adding to its cultural (and soft) power. The book focuses on six locations: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. The authors analyse Beijing’s changing policies towards the governance of culture, Internet technologies and digital platforms, as well as examining consumer perceptions of China and Chinese products in the Asia-Pacific region. In using the + characterizations, the authors provide a comprehensive analysis of how Chinese cultural and creative industries became digital, as well as investigating the key players and the leading platforms including Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, TikTok, Baidu, iQiyi and Meituan.

This book is dedicated to the Cantonese pioneers who voyaged to Nanyang and contributed to the contemporary Singapore. The term guanghuizhao (广惠肇, referring to Guangzhou 广州, Huizhou 惠州 and Zhaoqing 肇庆) for Cantonese is not only a geographical concept, but also a century-old brand in Singapore. Over generations, Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng and Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital remain immovable in Singapore, and the Yangzheng Foundation continues to serve the people, breaking a stereotypical view of the community, in which ‘the first generation establishes, the second generation preserves, the third generation squanders, and the fourth generation loses everything’. Nowadays, interracial marriages are common in Singapore and marriages between different dialect groups are beyond count. The younger generations have a vague awareness of their origins and many of them could barely communicate in their dialects. One could only wonder what the future will bring for these Chinese associations that were set up by the forefathers of various dialect groups.

Over the last two decades, Singapore has undergone a substantial degree of ‘Asianization’. Apart from participating in the Asian values debate of the 1990s, re-visioning itself as ‘New Asia’ and a global-Asian hub, and establishing Asian identities for the commodities it consumes and produces, Singapore has also repurposed its modernity, cultures, and ethos along similar regionalist precepts. However, even in recent times, Singapore continues to vacillate ambivalently between identifying with and differentiating itself from Asia. Responding to the challenges Singapore faces in coming to terms with its Asian identity, this book examines the complex cultural, social, and political underpinnings that have shaped Singapore’s mainstream discourse on Asia. Indeed, it argues that its legacy as a colonial port city, the exigencies of managing the post-independence nation state, and the larger forces of imperialism and capitalism all contribute to its politics of Asianism.
