A Broader View of Relativity shows that there is still new life in old physics. The book examines the historical context and theoretical underpinnings of Einstein''s theory of special relativity and describes Broad Relativity, a generalized theory of coordinate transformations between inertial reference frames that includes Einstein''s special relativity as a special case. It shows how the principle of relativity is compatible with multiple concepts of physical time and how these different procedures for clock synchronization can be useful for thinking about different physical problems, including many-body systems and the development of a Lorentz-invariant thermodynamics. Broad relativity also provides new answers to old questions such as the necessity of postulating the constancy of the speed of light and the viability of Reichenbach''s general concept of time. The book also draws on the idea of limiting-four-dimensional symmetry to describe coordinate transformations and the physics of particles and fields in non-inertial frames, particularly those with constant linear accelerations. This new edition expands the discussion on the role that human conventions and unit systems have played in the historical development of relativity theories and includes new results on the implications of broad relativity for clarifying the status of constants that are truly fundamental and inherent properties of our universe. For many years the etiology of human tumors has almost exclusively been attributed to environmental factors, which seemed to be involved not only in the induction of neo plasms but also in other phases of tumorigenesis. Cigarette smoking and alcohol are the two best known examples of factors related to our modern lifestyle which have been implicated in the development of cancer of various organs. From the 1960s onward, the pioneer work of a few investigators clearly showed that hereditary factors were not only related to rare neoplasms, but could also be respon sible for the occurrence of a sizeable fraction of tumors that do not usually show features of inheritance (as in the case of breast or colorectal cancer). Thus, the idea that some common human malignancies could be transmitted from one generation to another with features of mendelian gene tics became more and more evident. In addition, the verit able explosion of molecular biology in the last 15 years has made a further and substantial contribution to the emerging role of genetics in biomedical research and particularly in cancer.

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative condition in which arteries build up deposits called plaques (atheromas) which consist of lipids (mainly cholesterol), connective tissue and smooth muscle cells originating from the arterial wall. Plaques develop quietly over a period of years and are unnoticeable until there is an interruption in the normal flow of blood. Plaques may partially or totally block the blood's flow through an artery. Two things that can happen where plaques occur are: bleeding (hemorrhage) into the plaque; and formation of a blood clot (thrombus) on the plaque's surface. Atherosclerosis affects large and medium-sized arteries. The type of artery and where the plaque develops varies with each person. Atherosclerosis research has witnessed startling progress in recent years, partially due to new drugs as well as to new breakthroughs in molecular medicine.

Heat illnesses exist along a continuum starting with the mild condition of heat exhaustion and progressing to heat injury and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition clinically characterized by a severe elevation in body temperature with central nervous system dysfunction that often includes combativeness, delirium, seizures, and coma. Classic heat stroke is experienced primarily by the very young or elderly during annual heat waves. Exertional heat stroke is a condition experienced by young, fit individuals during strenuous physical activity in hot or temperate environments. Heat stroke sequelae are a consequence of heat injury to the tissues in combination with coagulopathies and a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) that often culminates in multi-organ system dysfunction or death. Endotoxin leakage across ischemic-damaged gut membranes is thought to initiate the SIRS with cytokines and other inflammatory mediators involved in this multi-factorial process. Rapid cooling at the time of heat stroke collapse is the most effective treatment to limit the severity of organ injury, but does not prevent long-term sequelae in all individuals. Unfortunately, there is limited understanding of the mechanisms mediating downstream effects of the SIRS on multi-organ injury and there are no clinical treatments to ensure recovery. Rather, many heat stroke victims experience permanent neurological dysfunction and peripheral organ injury that require months or years to resolve. Current research efforts are focused on identifying better diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of organ injury for development of more effective pharmacologic strategies to improve recovery.

YangOCoMills gravity is a new theory, consistent with experiments, that brings gravity back to the arena of gauge field theory and quantum mechanics in flat space-time. It provides solutions to long-standing difficulties in physics, such as the incompatibility between Einstein''s principle of general coordinate invariance and modern schemes for a quantum mechanical description of nature, and Noether''s OCyTheorem IIOCO which showed that the principle of general coordinate invariance in general relativity leads to the failure of the law of conservation of energy. YangOCoMills gravity in flat space-time appears to be more physically coherent than conventional gravity in curved space-time. The problems of quantization of the gravitational field, the operational meaning of space-time coordinates and momenta, and the conservation of energy-momentum are all resolved in YangOCoMills gravity.The aim of this book is to provide a treatment of quantum YangOCoMills gravity, with an emphasis on the ideas and evidence that the gravitational field is the manifestation of space-time translational symmetry in flat space-time, and that there exists a fundamental space-time symmetry framework that can encompass all of physics, including gravity, for all inertial and non-inertial frames of reference.
