A Paradigm for Complexity

Revolutionary and original, this treatise presents a new paradigm of Emergence and Complexity, with applications drawn from numerous disciplines, including artificial life, biology, chemistry, computation, physics, image processing, information science, etc. CNN is an acronym for Cellular Neural Networks when used in the context of brain science, or Cellular Nonlinear Networks, when used in the context of emergence and complexity. A CNN is modeled by cells and interactions: cells are defined as dynamical systems and interactions are defined via coupling laws. The CNN paradigm is a universal Turing machine and includes cellular automata and lattice dynamical systems as special cases. While the CNN paradigm is an example of Reductionism par excellence, the true origin of emergence and complexity is traced to a much deeper new concept called local activity. The numerous complex phenomena unified under this mathematically precise principle include self organization, dissipative structures, synergetics, order from disorder, far-from-thermodynamic equilibrium, collective behaviors, edge of chaos, etc. Written with a high level of exposition, this completely self-contained monograph is profusely illustrated with over 200 stunning color illustrations of emergent phenomena.

I felt as though I needed to invoke a change within the general public, through the experiences I have encountered in my life. I've compiled a collection of poems and short stories that deal with situations we struggle with daily. Just to let you know, I didn't point the finger at anyone. I made it my duty to show the general public, the transparency of me. At first, I was tentative with the content I was writing. But the realization of it all, is me accepting who I was and not hiding behind the metaphors of poems. However, in retrospect and in light of it all, I had to accept who I was. Art Meets Mathematics in the Fourth Dimension

To see objects that live in the fourth dimension we humans would need to add a fourth dimension to our three-dimensional vision. An example of such an object that lives in the fourth dimension is a hyper-sphere or “3-sphere.” The quest to imagine the elusive 3-sphere has deep historical roots: medieval poet Dante Alighieri used a 3-sphere to convey his allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife in his Divine Comedy. In 1917, Albert Einstein visualized the universe as a 3-sphere, describing this imagery as “the place where the reader’s imagination boggles. Nobody can imagine this thing.” Over time, however, understanding of the concept of a dimension evolved. By 2003, a researcher had successfully rendered into human vision the structure of a 4-web (think of an ever increasingly-dense spider’s web). In this text, Stephen Lipscomb takes his innovative dimension theory research a step further, using the 4-web to reveal a new partial image of a 3-sphere. Illustrations support the reader’s understanding of the mathematics behind this process. Lipscomb describes a computer program that can produce partial images of a 3-sphere and suggests methods of discerning other fourth-dimensional objects that may serve as the basis for future artwork.

It also documents the little-known rivalry between MI5 in London and MSS in Singapore, which led to the demise of the MSS and Dalley’s retirement.

It was Easter of 1994, and the congregation of Plains Community Baptist Church was celebrating the completion of the new temple, this sixty-one-member rural church had sacrificed twenty years to build. During their worship service, amid a storm, a man dressed a vagrant, whom no one knew or had ever seen, entered the auditorium unannounced and then marched uninvited directly to the front. To their mutual bewilderment, the stranger announced he was a messenger of God. He told them, “Destroy this church, and on the third day, God will raise it up greater than you could ever imagine.” They promptly threw him out. But after suffering a series of haunting dreams, suggesting the stranger was truly sent by God, they reluctantly but unanimously agreed to do as they believed God had commanded—by burning their beloved temple to the ground. However, on the third day, thereafter, the temple was not restored as prophesied but rather remained in ashes. Instead, what happened next was far more miraculous and mysterious and truly beyond their greatest imagination. Messengers of Isaiah is about the limitlessness of faith, as experienced by one tiny backwoods church who dared to say yes to God when He called.

Throughout the 19th century in the British Empire, parallel developments in science and the law were squeezing Aborigines everywhere into nonexistence. Charles Darwin took part in this. Again and again, he expressed his approval of the extermination of the native lower races. The more interesting part of the story is that there were plenty of voices, albeit a minority and mostly forgotten now, who objected on humanitarian grounds (and sometimes scientific grounds as well). Europeans, they said, were becoming polished savages and dehumanizing the Other. Darwin was very aware of this criticism and cared not one whit. As he said in a letter to Charles Lyell, I care not much whether we are looked at as mere savages in a remotely distant future. But he well knew it was not a remote future. He had read several writers who accused Europeans of being the real savages. For a brief moment in his youth in his Diary, he himself dabbled in such criticism, even though he already believed in the inferiority of indigenous peoples. That belief grew firmer as he matured. Darwin did not dispute humanitarians so much as he ignored them. Its a sad story. But oh those humanitarians, how they inspire.
