A book to help us determine what God's will really is; why we should conform our wills to His and see in this conformity our greatest good--for like it or not; we do have to live with God's holy will anyway. Brings great solace!
If this book saves just one person's life, Leo Prinsloo will be happy. Leo became a worldwide internet sensation after footage of his reaction to an attempted high-value goods-in-transit heist went viral. Stunned by his cool attitude and focused action in a crisis situation, South Africans had an example of what can happen when good people take a stand. With decades of experience in security – first as a policeman, then in the South African Police Service's Special Task Force, and now providing arms handling and security training in the private sector – Leo has a wealth of knowledge on how to manage life-threatening incidents. Driven by a desire to empower South Africans and help them claim back their sense of safety, he offers advice for dealing with every risky situation, from how to handle hijackings and road rage, to how to keep your children safe, to the best way to secure your home and business. He also provides comprehensive information about handling firearms and basic first aid. Leo's Guide to Not Becoming a Statistic is a guide to living your safest life in South Africa – something which has become increasingly important as our crime statistics continue to rise. Straight-talking and honest – much like Leo himself – it is an easy to use manual that makes keeping safe accessible, with relatable information and easy to implement tips. Leo says that taking the first step towards securing your safety is the most important, and his book will help you take that step.
Authenticity is one of the most rampant buzzwords in ELT (English Language Teaching). Many have weighed in on what authenticity should mean and on how it may be achieved. The book at hand is an extensive analysis of authenticity as a term and as a concept within the academic field of ELT. The research data comprises virtually all definitions and conceptualizations of authenticity in the international ELT literature. However, only a limited number of texts contributes to what can be called an explicit negotiation of authenticity. A discourse analytical approach is taken to disentangle the hubbub of commentaries and to eventually extrapolate from it six distinct concepts which are attached to the term 'authenticity'. Michel Foucault's seminal theories are invoked, affording additional insights into discourse dynamics and power structures among individuals and institutions in ELT.
What is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do? Nikolai knows that he wants to be the best person he can be, but often he is unsure if he is doing the right thing. So he goes to ask Leo, the wise turtle. When he arrives, the turtle is struggling to dig in his garden, and Nikolai rushes to help him. As he finishes work, a violent storm rolls in. Nikolai runs for Leo's cottage, but on his way, he hears cries for help from an injured panda. Nikolai brings her in from the cold, and then rushes back outside to rescue her baby too.
Most of us don’t seek advice or reach out to others for help very easily. In part, it’s because we’re conditioned to see life as an individual endeavor rather than a team sport. Or because we believe that asking for help makes us look weak or incapable. We regard self-help as by-yourself-help. News flash: no one in the history of the world has ever achieved any level of happiness or success totally by themselves. In his 1976 book The Long Run Solution, Joe Henderson suggested that becoming truly accomplished at running (or at anything) doesn’t typically require us to perform superhuman feats. In fact, success is frequently realized by those who simply do the things anyone can do that most of us never will. In What Anyone Can Do, with the help of Leo Bottary’s Year of the Peer podcasts guests (and playful illustrations by Ryan Foland), you’ll discover that if you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll do the things anyone can do far more often. And when you do that, you and the people around you will realize more of what you want out of business and life. It’s that simple. The Power of Peers (2016) made a strong case for how and why formal peer groups are so effective. This book steps outside the formal peer group arena to examine all the important relationships we have in our lives (parents, teachers, spouses, mentors, children, mentees, etc.) and provides a practical approach and specific framework for harnessing their power for your benefit (and theirs). It’s what anyone can do. You’re anyone, right?
1910. Anna Karenina and War and Peace have made Leo Tolstoy the world's most famous author. But fame comes at a price. In the tumultuous final year of his life, Tolstoy is desperate to find respite, so leaves his large family and the hounding press behind and heads into the wilderness. Too ill to venture beyond the tiny station of Astapovo, he believes his last days will pass in isolation. But as we learn through the journals of those closest to him, the battle for Tolstoy's soul will not be a peaceful one. Jay Parini introduces, translates and edits this collection of Tolstoy's autobiographical writing, diaries, and letters related to the last year of Tolstoy's life published to coincide with the 2009 film of Parini's novel The Last Station: A Novel of Tolstoy's Final Year.
Father Paul Wesley’s journey through life had proven to be a turbulent one. It began with his ignoble conception and continued through a tempestuous childhood and early days as an adult, as he rebelled in a truculent manner; seeking to overcome the stigma his mother’s unsavory lifestyle and the emotional misery it brought with it. Then, after causing the death of his best friend, Paul Wesley had an epiphany. His eyes were opened, and his life changed. Now, as a Catholic priest, he felt free of the emotional duress that threatened his existence. He was ready to atone for the raucous deportment of his youth through the ministry of the Church and leave his less than desirable past where it belonged ⸺in the past! But, unbeknownst to him, there were challenges still to be met. Amends that needed to be made. Decisions to be rendered that would define him as not only a priest but as a man. The archdiocese was in the process of downsizing. There were a glut of churches and some had to go. The architect of this downsizing scheme was the cardinal’s personal secretary, Father John Moore. He had a greedy plan in progress to fatten his family coffers. But his plan hit a snag when his next prized takeover was the Church of St. Theresa, a church that had been under the spiritual guidance of Father Ronald Coniglio; the cardinal’s seminarian roommate and close friend who has fallen on harsh times emotionally and physically. It is onto this scene that Father Paul Wesley is asked to be the answer to the cardinal’s guilt-ridden conscience for his negligence regarding the downward plight of an old friend. In the meantime, the cardinal’s secretary has a totally different objective for Father Wesley. He is to be the designated sheep in wolf’s clothing and oversee the demise of the poverty-ridden parish. What neither of the prelates in the archdiocesan hierarchy counted on was Father Wesley being his own man. He makes the decision to return to the church of his youth but not as the cardinal’s answer to ease his guilty conscience or Father Moore’s executioner of a ruthless plan to lull the parishioners of St. Theresa’s into a false sense of security. It is Father Wesley’s intention to, somehow, save the place. Once back in the old neighborhood he is forced to tackle the parishioners problems of infidelity, an unwanted pregnancy, intimidation, pedophilia, bigotry, poverty, marital discord and an attempted rape that will force him to revisit a past he wants to forget. His mettle will be tested, and his resolve challenged. Will he meet the daunting task he forced on himself? That question will be determined by the reader as materialistic matter crumbles but spirituality reigns on.
After reading War & Peace, Fyodor Dostoevsky put the book down and said, "The fool hath said in heart there is no God." Yet, Tolstoy's shorter novels (i.e., novellas) are filled with all the war, adventure, comedy, religion, tragedy, and Russian tradition that inhabit the longer novels of the Russian bear of literature. Andrew Barger, editor of the best selling anthology, "Leo Tolstoy's 20 Greatest Short Stories Annotated," has gathered the very best of Tolstoy's novellas into one remarkable collection that includes hundreds of annotations of difficult Russian terms and sheds light on historic figures mentioned in the stories. But there is much more to this anthology. Andrew has included a short biography on Tolstoy and a chronology of his life and publications. Read these fascinating novellas today: 1) The Invaders - A Russian team moves against Shamyl and his Islamic army in the Caucasus, which is based on Tolstoy's military experiences in the 1850s. 2) The Death of Ivan Ilyich - When a man who has done good his entire life is stricken with an illness, it makes him question everything. 3) Two Hussars - When a hell-raiser takes lodging in a small Russian city, debauchery is inevitable but will it be matched years later by his son? 4) Father Sergius - The taboo subject of a priest being subjected to physical temptation is explored in one of Tolstoy's most scandalous stories. 5) Master & Man - By the end of this snowstorm adventure, you will be asking yourself, Who is the master and who is the servant? What do some of the world's greatest literary minds have to say about the works of Tolstoy: A second Shakespeare. Gustave Flaubert No English novelist is as great as Tolstoy. E.M. Forster The greatest Russian writer of prose fiction. Vladimir Nabokov The greatest of all novelists. Virginia Woolf Read the shorter novels of Leo Tolstoy today: http://www.AndrewBarger.com

Jesus was a great storyteller – like an Irish seanchaí. Over two millenniums, his message has been encumbered with layers of translation and theology. The Carpenter sets out to pare these layers back, presenting the stories of Yeshua with purity and simplicity. Jesus arrived on earth for the benefit of everyone. The ultimate humanitarian, his teachings were centered around everyday issues, with no gender bias. He had many female friends, including Joanna, Mary, Susanna and the sisters of Lazarus. His message was all inclusive, and this book sets out to restore that balance. The narratives of the four evangelists – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – have been pieced together to flow as a single chronicle. Readers will find a straightforward introduction to the Gospel that is easy to digest, and accessible to modern people living busy lives. These are the meaningful stories of Jesus, and the message of the love of God.
This book first appeared in 1911. Alan Leo himself described it as the most remarkable book ever published. In his previous books Leo told us how to calculate and interpret charts, with a distinctly Theosophical slant. In this book, Leo (1860-1917), gives the prize secrets of the astrologer's craft. Among them, delineations for the Ruler of the Ascendant (aka chart ruler), including by sign and house. More broadly, he delineates each of the planets through the twelve houses in order to turn it about and delineate the rulers of those houses, based on the nature of the houses themselves: Finance (2), Travel (3), Environment (5), Enterprise (5), Sickness (6), Marriage and marriage prospects (7), Legacies (8), Philosophy (9), Profession (10), Friends (11), and the Occult (12). What do these houses in your chart say about you? Peek inside and find out Based on his lifetime's study, Leo gives succinct chart summaries. What life will be like if the majority of planets in your chart were in the East or West, above or below the horizon, or the majority in fire, or air, or water, or earth signs, as well as cardinal, fixed or mutable. He gives special emphasis to the luminaries (Sun and Moon), delineating the pair of them both by element, as well as in all 144 possible combinations of signs (polarities). In every chart there is a rising planet. Leo delineates it. The Moon's sign at birth gives a distinct color to the aura. Leo will tell you what yours is. What will the future bring? Leo gives delineations for progressed planets, including the progressed Moon by both sign and house. He concludes the book with a delineation for the King of England, George V. In his life, Alan Leo reintroduced astrology to the western world, a phenomenal achievement.

Although Leo Strauss published little on Nietzsche, his lectures and correspondence demonstrate a deep critical engagement with Nietzsche’s thought. One of the richest contributions is a seminar on Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, taught in 1959 during Strauss’s tenure at the University of Chicago. In the lectures, Strauss draws important parallels between Nietzsche’s most important project and his own ongoing efforts to restore classical political philosophy. With Leo Strauss on Nietzsche’s “Thus Spoke Zarathustra,” eminent Strauss scholar Richard L. Velkley presents Strauss’s lectures on Zarathustra with superb annotations that bring context and clarity to the critical role played by Nietzsche in shaping Strauss’s thought. In addition to the broad relationship between Nietzsche and political philosophy, Strauss adeptly guides readers through Heidegger’s confrontations with Nietzsche, laying out Heidegger’s critique of Nietzsche’s “will to power” while also showing how Heidegger can be read as a foil for his own reading of Nietzsche. The lectures also shed light on the relationship between Heidegger and Strauss, as both philosophers saw Nietzsche as a central figure for understanding the crisis of philosophy and Western civilization. Strauss’s reading of Nietzsche is one of the important—yet little appreciated—philosophical inquiries of the past century, both an original interpretation of Nietzsche’s thought and a deep engagement with the core problems that modernity posed for political philosophy. It will be welcomed by anyone interested in the work of either philosopher.

There is no explanation. Here in a vibrant new translation, the tale of a judge who slowly comes to understand that his illness is fatal was inspired by Tolstoy's observation at his local train station of hundreds of shackled prisoners being sent off to Siberia, many for petty crimes. When he learned that the sentencing judge had died, Tolstoy was roused to consider the judge's thoughts during his final days--a study on the acceptance of mortality only deepened by the death, during its writing, of one of Tolstoy's own young children.

Something SMALL is wrong with physics if we look at the Hubble images of our universe. This and other anomalies described in the book are a firm reason to suggest a PARADIGM SHIFT, which could lead to a TOE. (Theory Of Everything)I hope you will enjoy the reading of this book. HOWEVER I also hope that you will be able to grasp the speculative logic of my "Goals of intelligent life" postulation. Why? because:If we don't feed the "have nots" and keep them in endless poverty, the STP-ROM or Global (collective) consciousness around Mother Earth, which is supposed to be the base for all our dreams and intuition, will turn into a steep negative spiral. This could be the origin of a strong global hatred and the rise of fascist leaders.
