This book is about the author's experiences practicing general medicine in Quesnel, B.C., from 1951 to 1961. The book is written in primarily anecdotal form. It is intended for the general reader. Medical concepts are described in simple terms. In order to put matters in perspective, the author starts by relating, again in mainly anecdotal form, his experiences completing pre-medicine, medical school and his internship. In the latter part of the book the author compares (in terms that can be followed by the general audience), the practice of medicine in the 1950s to now. For example, he discusses the impact of universal health care when it was introduced in the 1960s. As well, the author explains why he feels a young physician should seriously consider at least part of his career practicing medicine in a rural, rather than an urban area.

This innovative volume provides a new analytic framework for understanding how meaning-making resources are deployed in images designed for knowledge building in school science. The framework enables analyses of science images from the perspectives of both their complexity and recognizability. Complexity deals with the technical and abstract knowledge of school science (technicality), evaluative dispositions in relation to that knowledge (iconization) and the condensation of the technical and dispositional meanings as ‘synoptic eyefuls’ in discipline-specific infographics (aggregation). Recognizability concerns the relationship between the appearance of phenomena in reality and the reconfiguration of this reality in images (congruence), the perceptibility or discernibility of the features and contexts of phenomena in images (explicitness), and how images engage their viewers (affiliation). The framework is illustrated by more than 100 images in colour in the e-book and black and white in the paper version and will inform research into multimodal literacy pedagogy that incorporates an understanding of the role of images in the teaching and learning of school science. This book will be of particular interest to scholars in multimodality, semiotics, literacy education and science education.

This book presents the alarming evidence that nation-states actively engage in terror, and also passively allow terror to be visited upon their citizens. It is not just liberation movements and radical groups that deploy terrorist tactics for offensive ends. States use terror defensively to directly intimidate their citizens, and to indirectly attack themselves or harm their citizens under a false flag. Their motivation? To provide pretexts for otherwise unwanted wars, or to gain increased police powers. Statesmen have executed indirect terrorism in various ways, but most plots tend to involve the pretence of blind eyes, misdirection, and cover-ups that give the statesmen plausible deniability. The shrinking of the 'Lusitania', the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the October Surprise, the first World Trade Center bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing and other well-known incidents suggest that terrorism is often successfully used by states to take the offensive against enemies at home and abroad. Was 9--11 such an indirect defensive attack?Len Bracken traces the clues circumstantially connecting a multi-armed hydra of oil interests, the CIA, FBI diplomats and statesmen to the September 11 attacks and examines whether they were engineered or allowed as a pretext for the war in Afghanistan. The subsequent anthrax attack targeting Democratic senators is considered in light of the controversial USA Patriot Acts rights-encroaching measures and the act's easy passage under conditions of terror. A shadow government appears to have covered the land like black ice.
