This book examines Southerners' claims to loyal citizenship in the reunited nation after the American Civil War. Southerners - male and female; elite and non-elite; white, black, and American Indian - disagreed with the federal government over the obligations citizens owed to their nation and the obligations the nation owed to its citizens. Susanna Michele Lee explores these clashes through the operations of the Southern Claims Commission, a federal body that rewarded compensation for wartime losses to Southerners who proved that they had been loyal citizens of the Union. Lee argues that Southerners forced the federal government to consider how white men who had not been soldiers and voters, and women and racial minorities who had not been allowed to serve in those capacities, could also qualify as loyal citizens. Postwar considerations of the former Confederacy potentially demanded a reconceptualization of citizenship that replaced exclusions by race and gender with inclusions according to loyalty.
A Girl from Busan is an enthralling autobiographical narrative that chronicles the life of Okhui Lee, a remarkable woman who defied immense obstacles, challenging the stereotypical image of a Korean immigrant in her quest to overcome her family’s curse of drug addiction. Okhui’s journey paints a poignant and sobering portrait of a vibrant young Korean woman who arrived in the United States in the 1960s and forged an unconventional path to raise her family. The book is a treasure trove of personal anecdotes and intimate moments that put Okhui’s inner strength to the ultimate test. Her life journey takes her from being a highly sought-after Hollywood burlesque dancer to a thriving nightclub owner in Waikiki, ultimately unveiling her true calling as a mother and her dedication to her family. Her unwavering faith becomes a guiding light in saving her eldest son from the clutches of drug addiction. A Girl from Busan weaves a rich tapestry of experiences that are not only deeply personal but universally relatable to people from all walks of life. Okhui Lee delves into the struggles of immigration, cultural differences, and the heart-wrenching pain of addiction and loss. Throughout it all, Okhui’s story conveys a message of hope and faith, demonstrating that even the most formidable challenges can be surmounted. Her life is an inspiration, serving as a beacon of hope for those facing adversity. Readers can look forward to a beautifully crafted memoir that is not only inspirational but also culturally illuminating. What sets Okhui’s story apart is its genuine and open-hearted portrayal as she fearlessly shares the most personal moments of her life, allowing a level of transparency that is often rare in Asian literature and media. A Girl from Busan is a courageous, comical, and often moving memoir that offers a candid glimpse into the life of a woman who confronted tremendous adversity and emerged as the matriarch of her family. This book is a must-read for anyone in search of a story of resilience, faith, and the indomitable human spirit.
Mount Geumgang, also known as the Diamond Mountains, is perhaps the most famous and emotionally resonant site on the Korean Peninsula, a magnificent range of rocky peaks, waterfalls, and lagoons, dotted with pavilions and temples. Since ancient times, it has inspired cultural pride, spurred spiritual and artistic pilgrimages, and engendered an outpouring of creative expression. Yet since the partition of Korea in 1945 situated it in the North, Mount Geumgang has remained largely inaccessible to visitors, shrouded in legend, loss, and longing. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art is the first book in English to explore the pictorial representations of this grand and varied landscape. The special exhibition it accompanies, organized by Soyoung Lee, Curator in the Department of Asian Art, examines the evolution of Diamond Mountains imagery from the golden age of Korean true-view painting in the eighteenth century to the present day. Even today, when a profusion of Instagram photos can make the world’s most obscure sites and geographical oddities seem familiar, the Diamond Mountains portrayed here in album leaves, scrolls, and screens will be a revelation to many.
