In 1828 Edward Mitchell was the first student of African descent to graduate from Dartmouth College, more than thirty-five years before any other Ivy League school admitted a black student. This book tells Mitchell's life story with the help of a recently rediscovered trove of his college essays, notes on his religious conversion, and hand-copied versions of his sermons. Born and raised in the French slave colony of Martinique, Mitchell immigrated to the United States and came of age in Philadelphia, where he broke bread with the city's African American clerics and civic leaders. The Dartmouth trustees initially denied Mitchell admission but yielded to unified student protest. After his graduation, Mitchell continued his northward journey to serve as a Baptist preacher and evangelist in the pulpits of northern New England. His religious odyssey concluded in Lower Canada, where he was remembered as "the most profound theologian ever settled." During his travels throughout the Atlantic world in an age of revolution and religious revival, Mitchell encountered the dominant social, economic, and political realities of his time. The American frontier, a potent symbol since Europeans first stepped ashore on North America, serves as the touchstone for Kerwin Klein's analysis of the narrating of history. When searching for books about black lives in St. Louis most books start around the 1940's or 50's. They reflect the lives of black folks who went to Beaumont, Vashon, Soldan, or other institutions that they were able to attend in what was a segregated St. Louis. ere were blacks in St. Louis since its inception and founding. They worked on the riverboats. they were draymen, laborers, laundresses, and servants. they helped establish St. Louis. They were slaves and 'free'. They endured the perils of the Civil War and its aftermath. They were citizens of St. Louis with their own culture and society. ere were ordinary folks and those of the black aristocracy. Who were the black folks that helped establish St. Louis and its history? There is very little recorded history about them. Where did they live? What did they do for a living? What about their social lives and their interactions with each other and the white residents of St. Louis? A population list from the year 1872 accompanies this narrative and shows where they lived and what they did for a living. Lee Drake was born on a farm in Philadelphia, Mississippi and moved with his family to East St. Louis, Illinois in the 1950's. His family was seeking a better way of life. He spent his formative years in that small town, feeling sheltered and loved by family and friends. Early summers were spent back at the farm in Mississippi with cousins, aunts and uncles, and grandparents. He learned to accept using the back door to enter the small corner store, and thought the balcony was where his family wanted to sit at the movie theatres in St. Louis. His first experience away from that sheltered life came when he was drafted to the jungles of Vietnam. As a young man he became aware that the stories of black Americans and their part in American history were not being told. Throughout his 34 year professional career as a high school art and photography teacher in St. Louis County, Missouri, he began researching and putting together stories of black people in St. Louis. He completed his education with a doctorate from St. Louis University. Dr. Drake lives in St. Louis County and continues to work part time as an art and photography teacher. For more than a century the cinematic Western has been America's most familiar genre, always teetering on the verge of exhaustion and yet regularly revived in new forms. Why does this outmoded vehicle--with the most narrowly based historical setting of any popular genre--maintain its appeal? In Late Westerns Lee Clark Mitchell takes a position against those critics looking to attach "post" to the all-too-familiar genre. For though the frontier disappeared long ago, though men on horseback have become commonplace, and though films of all sorts have always, necessarily, defied generic patterns, the Western continues to enthrall audiences. It does so by engaging narrative expectations stamped on our collective consciousness so firmly as to integrate materials that might not seem obviously "Western" at all. Through plot cues, narrative reminders, and even cinematic frameworks, recent films shape interpretive understanding by triggering a long-standing familiarity audiences have with the genre. Mitchell's critical analysis reveals how these films engage a thematic and cinematic border-crossing in which their formal innovations and odd plots succeed deconstructively, encouraging by allusion, implication, and citation the evocation of generic meaning from ingredients that otherwise might be interpreted quite differently. Applying genre theory with close cinematic readings, Mitchell posits that the Western has essentially been "post" all along.

She argues that the work of art is itself both object and agent of globalization. The authors emphasize the importance of the introduction of a uniform prison sentence [that is to say ·the termination of the distinction between kinds of prison sentences] and the elimination of short term prison sentences, as the main points of the reform in the "general part" of the code.
