Co-authored by three prominent philosophers of art, Jazz and the Philosophy of Art is the first book in English to be exclusively devoted to philosophical issues in jazz. It covers such diverse topics as minstrelsy, bebop, Voodoo, social and tap dancing, parades, phonography, musical forgeries, and jazz singing, as well as Goodman’s allographic/autographic distinction, Adorno’s critique of popular music, and what improvisation is and is not. The book is organized into three parts. Drawing on innovative strategies adopted to address challenges that arise for the project of defining art, Part I shows how historical definitions of art provide a blueprint for a historical definition of jazz. Part II extends the book’s commitment to social-historical contextualism by exploring distinctive ways that jazz has shaped, and been shaped by, American culture. It uses the lens of jazz vocals to provide perspective on racial issues previously unaddressed in the work. It then examines the broader premise that jazz was a socially progressive force in American popular culture. Part III concentrates on a topic that has entered into the arguments of each of the previous chapters: what is jazz improvisation? It outlines a pluralistic framework in which distinctive performance intentions distinguish distinctive kinds of jazz improvisation. This book is a comprehensive and valuable resource for any reader interested in the intersections between jazz and philosophy.

The 57th Virginia Infantry was one of five regiments in General Lewis Armistead's Brigade in Pickett's Charge, at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Prior to being Brigadier General, Armistead commanded the 57th Virginia. About 1,800 men joined the 57th, primarily from Franklin, Pittsylvania, Buckingham, Botetourt, and Albemarle County, but at least 15 bordering counties contributed men. Initial enlistments were from May-July of 1861, with the nucleus coming from 5 companies of Keen's Battalion. This publication gives detail on the battles, from Malvern Hill to Appomattox, and the prison camps many suffered through. The core of the book, however, is a quest for basic genealogical data on the men of the 57th Virginia, with a focus on their parents, wives, and location in 1860.

Marge never believed in in the existence of pure evil. Certainly, she placed no credence in the idea of supernatural evil, such as powerful spirits or entities from elsewhere that are capable of entering our material realm and committing horrific acts. Such fanciful notions were not part of her worldview. As Marge saw it, we already had enough vicious, hyper greedy and power hungry people in our real world, including any number of natural calamities that was enough to deal with. Who wanted to be concerned about being beset by evil imports from some netherworld? One evening in early October, Marge and four of her friends, all college seniors, set off to look through an old, vacant farmhouse as a possible site for their Halloween party. As the three young men are examining the second floor of the house, they are interrupted by the hysterical calling out to them by one of the two young female companions. She insists, rather incoherently, that something awful has happened in the cellar. She seems to think what happened was caused by some kind of fantastic, monstrous thing, which suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Of course, her friends assume she is mistaken. As the group, all go to check out the cellar, they attempt to calm her by suggesting explanations that are more logical. Marge, the other female member of this group, is also aware that something very extraordinary did happen, and she too is shaken to the core. However, she remains silent about what she experienced. Why? When put on the spot, she draws a blank. She cant think how to explain what she saw, heard and felt, without revealing the too humiliating truth of how she knows this: because she was eavesdropping at the cellar door. Had she not eavesdropped, Marge realizes she could have remained blithely unaware of the cellar incident, which is by far, what she would have preferred. She will later desperately look for logical, rational explanations for what seemed to have happened in that cellar. However, she will find further evidence that will only support what Marge didnt want to believe. Indeed, that house is host to some evil alien thing that doesnt belong in this world. The Cellar Incident will shatter Marges unquestioned concepts of what constitutes reality. The experience will haunt her dreams, torment her thoughts and force her to rethink her views on everything.

As a registered nurse for the last 28 years, my primary clinical expertise has been working in the pre-hospital environment as a flight nurse and a paramedic, as well as continuing to work in a variety of clinical areas which include the emergency department, pediatrics and endoscopy. My extensive clinical background has also given me the opportunity to work as a legal nurse consultant with one of the largest law firms in Arizona. As an EMS educator and program director of paramedic training programs for the last 20 years and most recently as the National Clinical Educator for one of the largest air medical transport companies, I truly enjoy teaching in a simple manner as to assure that students do have a strong basic understanding in making critical care decisions and that they will be providing the highest quality of patient care beginning from the least to the most invasive management of care for the patients they are transporting. My goal as a professional and as an EMS educator has always been and will continue to encourage students to have the desire to learn and grow in their profession, as well as contribute to EMS in a way that inspires positive change.
