From divorce court to popular culture, alimony is a dirty word. Unpopular and rarely ordered, the awards are frequently inconsistent and unpredictable. The institution itself is often viewed as an historical relic that harkens back to a gendered past in which women lacked the economic independence to free themselves from economic support by their spouses. In short, critics of alimony claim it has no place in contemporary visions of marriage as a partnership of equals. But as Cynthia Lee Starnes argues in The Marriage Buyout, alimony is often the only practical tool for ensuring that divorce does not treat today’s primary caregivers as if they were suckers. Her solution is to radically reconceptualize alimony as a marriage buyout. Starnes’s buyouts draw on a partnership model of marriage that reinforces communal norms of marriage, providing a gender-neutral alternative to alimony that assumes equality in spousal contribution, responsibility, and right. Her quantification formulae support new default rules that make buyouts more certain and predictable than their current alimony counterparts. Looking beyond alimony, Starnes outlines a new vision of marriages with children, describing a co-parenting partnership between committed couples, and the conceptual basis for income sharing between divorced parents of minor children. Ultimately, under a partnership model, the focus of alimony is on gain rather than loss and equality rather than power: a spouse with disparately low earnings isn’t a sucker or a victim dependent on a fixed alimony payment, but rather an equal stakeholder in marriage who is entitled at divorce to share any gains the marriage produced.

“Authenticity” has begun to rival “development” as a key to understanding the political aspirations of the Islamic world. Almost everywhere modernity has laid waste to tradition, those habits and practices deemed to be timeless and true. Imperialism carried European notions of progress into Muslim-dominated parts of the globe, and subsequently Muslims themselves espoused Western practices, techniques, and philosophies. Regimes calling themselves liberal, socialist, and Arab nationalist all embraced modernity as their principal objective. Most of these regimes failed to create the promised better lives their citizens desired. Moreover, ordinary Muslims felt despair as modernity ripped apart families, exposed youngsters to the materialism and hedonism of Western entertainments, heightened social expectations, and undermined religious belief. Even though tradition has proved itself incapable of staving off modernity, the promises and premises of modern development literature have been called into question. Where is the truth around which Muslims can rally? Does modernity require a rejection of tradition? Does the embrace of Islamic ideas necessitate turning away from modernity? Robert D. Lee explores these compelling questions by presenting four contemporary Muslim writers—Muhammad Iqbal, Sayyid Qutb, ‘Ali Shari’ati, and Mohammed Arkoun—all of whom have refused to bow to such a dichotomy of modernity and tradition. This study examines their efforts, deeply influenced by European thinking, to find a truth beyond tradition and modernity—an “authentic” understanding of Islam upon which Muslims can build a future. All four thinkers believe such an authentic understanding can serve as the foundation for a new politics. Lee argues, however, that each of these versions of authenticity suffers shortcomings and falters in its efforts to move from the particularity of culture onto a grander scale of political organization appropriate for the modern world.

When I was incarcerated and serving three years, I read a lot of books. Donald Goins became my favorite author because his writing is what I could relate to the most. I also read books written by Terry Woods, Sista Soulja, and David Fisher, among other great authors. I had a cellmate who became a good friend of mine. We shared stories about our lives. One day he told me that we could write a book about all the crimes we had witnessed in our lives. That night I lay in my bed, thinking to myself that of all the books I've read, many of the characters reminded me of some people in my life. That was when I realized I could become a writer. This book is based on two characters, Kevin, and Akeem, who were young thugs born and raised on the streets of Philadelphia. They mastered a hustler's dream of survival and gained respect from others. They were loyal to each other, and their goal was to succeed in the hood where they both grew up. They became cocaine dealers, marijuana smokers, and gun holders. They were outlaws. Despite the passing of time, they were haunted by the streets, and the lust for money caused lost lives. Kevin's experiences made him realize that thug life wasn't the way to live, and through the support of his family, he could become a better person. Akeem, on the other hand, did not share the same views. Any misfortunes made him worse. He felt that the lifestyle of a thug was his only way to succeed. Despite this, the bond between them was never broken. This book is about the experiences of inner-city neighborhoods. It's about the life of thugs and the game that young teens choose to play, especially in the streets of Philly. The never-ending cycle of drugs, violence, love, and loss will continue for generations to come.

Why do certain militaries brutally suppress popular demonstrations, while others support the path to political liberalization by backing mass social movements? Although social movements and media can help destabilize authoritarian governments, not all social protest is effective or culminates in the toppling of dictatorships. Frequently, the military’s response determines the outcome. In Defect or Defend, Terence Lee uses four case studies from Asia to provide insight into the military’s role during the transitional phase of regime change. Lee compares popular uprisings in the Philippines and Indonesia—both of which successfully engaged military support to bring down authoritarian rule—with protest movements in China and Burma which were violently suppressed by military forces. Lee’s theory of “high personalism” and power-sharing among the armed forces leadership provides a framework for understanding the critical transitory phases of democratization. He uses this theory to review and assess Eastern Europe’s democratization events in 1989, the Colored Revolutions of the early 2000s, and the protests and revolutions unfolding in the Middle East. This book will appeal to students and scholars of comparative politics, Asian studies, security studies, and international relations, as well as defense policymakers.

But with his mother being Jewish, still living in Iran, it is not a difficult task. With the aid of Juan Hernandez, he travels to Mexico, buys a sniper rifle and scope, and is hustled aboard a coyote’s boxed truck loaded with people who will be entering the States illegally. Aboard the truck, he comes to the aid of a Mexican woman, Isabella, who is being hassled by the other travelers. Together, they cross the border and travel to California, then across the States to where Daniel comes in contact with the person who is his target he was sent to take out.
