“This book is the inspirational story that we all need. No one makes me laugh harder than Leanne Morgan!”—Reese Witherspoon The beloved comedy sensation packs a hilarious punch with real talk about what it’s like to be a woman today—from rebelling against the latest diet trends to dealing with perimenopausal mean girls and attending rock concerts in middle age. For a long time, no one pulling the strings in the comedy world thought that a woman over fifty from rural Tennessee could make it in the industry. But Leanne Morgan has defied the odds, reaching millions with her musings on hormones, low-rise britches, Weight Watchers, and her opposites-attract relationship with her husband, Chuck. In her charming southern accent, Morgan brings readers inside her quest to find her voice after spending many years trying to figure out what that meant. Along the way, we learn how she grew up as a butcher’s daughter, landed a husband with health insurance, honed her stand-up technique selling jewelry at house parties, embraced the glories of aging, and surrendered to the comfort of wearing big flesh-toned panties. Equal parts warm and hilarious, this book is a must-read by one of comedy’s rising stars—reminding you that every time life leaves you asking “What in the world?!,” something good is bound to come out of it someday.

This transatlantic study analyses a missing chapter in the history of art collecting, the first art market bubble in the United States. In the decades following the Civil War, French art monopolized art collections across the United States. During this “Gilded Age picture rush,” the commercial art system-art dealers, galleries, auction houses, exhibitions, museums, art journals, press coverage, art histories, and collection catalogues-established a strong foothold it has not relinquished to this day. In addition, a pervasive concern for improving aesthetics and providing the best contemporary art to educate the masses led to the formation not only of private art collections, but also of institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and to the publication of art histories. Richly informed by collectors' and art dealers' diaries, letters, stock books, journals, and hitherto neglected art histories, The New York Market for French Art in the Gilded Age, 1867-1893 offers a fresh perspective on this trailblazing era.
ABOUT THE BOOK Based on his personal experiences and observations from living in Key West and Cuba, Hemingway composed the non-stop adventures of the indefatigable yachtsman Harry Morgan, an ex-policeman struggling to survive the Great Depression in the depths of Cuban revolutionary waters. The Morgan story was originally intended to be published in three separate short stories (Baker xvi)a narrative genre which Hemingway himself was redefining at the time. Hemingway had already published the first and second stories of Harry Morgan in Cosmopolitan and Esquire magazines (1934, 1935), and decided to revise all the tales into one novel. Yet the melding of the three stories, along with the intervening story of Richard Gordon, created a novel lacking in unity. Hemingway even admitted that To Have and Have Not was a procedural error (Baker xv), and his least gratifying book (Baker 205). The novel was crafted during a time in Hemingways life that experts describe as an interim period of artistic regression between his better glory days (Baker xvi). The start of the Spanish Civil War also influenced Hemingways time and focus on the novel, in that the main character as an individual comes to share the same fate as the oppressed proletarians of his society (Meyers 267). Hemingway worked and reworked with the manuscript, even relying on the unbiased editorial eyes of trusted friends (Mellow 485), until its final publication by Scribner in 1937. It opened to critical reviews which considered the work to be an anti-capitalist stance against the U.S. government with Marxist undertones, and as a novel divided against itselftelling multiple stories which just didnt cohere as a single novel (Mellow 488; Baker 205, 206). MEET THE AUTHOR LeAnne Bagnall is a professional Los Angeles-based writer and editor who specializes in American literature, culture, lifestyle, health, and community. LeAnne has been writing on topics of charity, philanthropy, health and wellness, and current events for a number of publications over the past five years. She earned a BA in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Specialization in American Cultures and Global Contexts in 2006, and is trained in non-profit board management. She enjoys writing fiction, reading 20th century American and non-Western literature, swing dancing, watching classic film, collecting antiques, volunteering to support veterans, and spending her free time appreciating classic car culture. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK You know how it is there early in the morning in Havana with the bums still asleep against the walls of the buildings; before even the ice wagons come by with ice for the bars? Most likely, you do not knowand could not possibly even knowwhat it would be like to see this scenario, yet this is the world into which Hemingway plunges his reader at the start of To Have and Have Not. The novel is ultimately about the perils of the Haves and Have Nots trying to survive the economic crisis of the Great Depression within the locale of Key West and Havana. It is a tumultuous political and social climate; the desperate and helpless population (especially those Cubans running their political revolution) are forced to take any means of income available to them, including the black market, murder, robbery, and smuggling. This is the world to which Harry Morgan, the storys main character, belongs as well. Harry is a tough, bold, cynical, and exceptionally smart yachtsman with a wife and three daughters living in Key West. Harry is forced to run contraband as well as human smuggling on his boat to make a living and survive the societal decay of the region. The Dakota Sioux Experience at Flandreau and Pipestone Indian Schools illuminates the relationship between the Dakota Sioux community and the schools and surrounding region, as well as the community’s long-term effort to maintain its role as caretaker of the “sacred citadel” of its people. Cynthia Leanne Landrum explores how Dakota Sioux students at Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota and at Pipestone Indian School in Minnesota generally accepted the idea that they should attend these particular boarding institutions because they saw them as a means to an end and ultimately as community schools. This construct operated within the same philosophical framework in which some Eastern Woodland nations approached a non-Indian education that was simultaneously tied to long-term international alliances between Europeans and First Peoples beginning in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Landrum provides a new perspective from which to consider the Dakota people’s overt acceptance of this non-Native education system and a window into their ongoing evolutionary relationships, with all of the historic overtures and tensions that began the moment alliances were first brokered between the Algonquian Confederations and the European powers.

This book examines the employment arrangements of professional athletes in the Premier League football competition, the National Basketball Association competition and rugby union played at an international level. It describes the organisation and regulatory frameworks of these three professional team sports and highlights the legal, economic and regulatory factors that influence the final form of an athlete’s working conditions. It provides a comparative analysis between the sports on issues such as the role of collective bargaining, wage regulation, salary caps, nationality restrictions, eligibility, player movement and the acquisition of a player’s intellectual property. It discusses the approaches adopted in each sport for balancing the interests of labour and management, the problem of controlling private regulatory power in professional sport, and considers the extent to which legal or government intervention is required in an athlete’s employment relationship. National law can assist players in a domestic league to secure an involvement in the determination of working conditions but it has a more limited effect in a competition organised by an international governing body. This book argues that social regulation through soft law processes at an international level may benefit athletes, consumers and sport globally. It provides a useful case example for comparison with the organisation of other professional team sports in Europe, North America and Australasia. This book is important reading for scholars and practitioners in the fields of international sports law, employment law, competition law, European law and human rights law. It is also highly recommended for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels taking modules and courses in Sports Law or Sports Business Management. Dr. Leanne O’Leary is a dual-qualified solicitor, Senior Lecturer in Law and member of the Centre for Sports Law Research at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom. This book appears in the ASSER International Sports Law Series, under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Ben Van Rompuy and Dr. Antoine Duval.

This is a groundbreaking examination of the attempts to regulate female sexuality in twentieth-century Northern Ireland, which opens up new and exciting areas of a previously neglected history. A wide-ranging study, it explores the sexual experiences of women in the context of the distinctive religious, political and social circumstances of Northern Ireland during the twentieth century. The commonality of attitudes of the Catholic Churches toward the control of female sexuality is revealed, along with the similarity of views concerning female behaviour. While the ways in which various authorities tried to control female behaviour are explored, it is also argued that women were not simply victims, but employed a variety of survival strategies and active agency, no matter how difficult their circumstances were. This work will appeal not only to an academic audience but also to non-academic readers interested in a new and exciting view of Northern Ireland’s past.

Women Writing the Nation: National Identity, Female Community, and the British - French Connection, 1770-1820 engages in recent discussions of the development of British nationalism during the eighteenth century and Romantic period. Leanne Maunu argues that women writers looked not to their national identity, but rather to their gender to make claims about the role of women within the British nation. Discussing texts by Frances Burney, Charlotte Smith, Mary Wollstonecraft, and others in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, Maunu demonstrates that women writers of this period imagined themselves as members of a fairly stable community, even if such a community was composed of many different women with many different beliefs. They appropriated the model of collectivity posed by the nation, mimicking a national imagined community.

With a balanced approach, this text reflects a strong emphasis on practical and legal matters related to alternatives to prison and jail. This Sixth Edition features a new five-part organization, a line-by-line update, a new citation style (APA), and a wide array of ancillaries.
