Obra de teatro, texto completo.-Acto I.-Acto II.-Acto III.
This book examines the circulation of knowledge within globalization, focusing on the differences between centers and peripheries of knowledge production in the social sciences. It explores not only how knowledge is appropriated in peripheral fields but also how foreign ideas shape those fields and the trajectories of scholars, and uses actor-network theory to explain circulation of knowledge as an extension of socio-technical networks that transcend borders.
This book is an introduction to the use of machine learning and data-driven approaches in fluid simulation and animation, as an alternative to traditional modeling techniques based on partial differential equations and numerical methods – and at a lower computational cost. This work starts with a brief review of computability theory, aimed to convince the reader – more specifically, researchers of more traditional areas of mathematical modeling – about the power of neural computing in fluid animations. In these initial chapters, fluid modeling through Navier-Stokes equations and numerical methods are also discussed. The following chapters explore the advantages of the neural networks approach and show the building blocks of neural networks for fluid simulation. They cover aspects related to training data, data augmentation, and testing. The volume completes with two case studies, one involving Lagrangian simulation of fluids using convolutional neural networks and the other using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) approaches.
Three centuries of a family history that incite, more than to bask in the display of an absent aristocratic ancestry, to explore the details of a trajectory that begins in the British colonial world of north America, to anchor in the late 19th century in the wild frontier of the northeast of Santa Fe, Argentina. A panorama where the lights and shadows of lives that have left a deep mark are integrated.
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This text offers a comprehensive and nuanced view of the economic development of Spain since 1850. It provides a new set of historical GDP estimates for Spain from the demand and supply sides, and presents a reconstruction of production and expenditure series for the century prior to the introduction of modern national accounts. The author splices available national accounts sets over the period 1958–2015 through interpolation, as an alternative to conventional retropolation. The resulting national accounts series are linked to the historical estimates providing yearly series for GDP and its components since 1850. On the basis of new population estimates, the author derives GDP per head, decomposed into labour productivity and the amount of work per person, and placed into international perspective. With theoretical reasoning and historiographical implications, Prados de la Escosura provides a useful methodological reference work for anyone interested in national accounting. This is the definitive study of Spain's transition to a modern economy.’ —Patrick Karl O'Brien, Emeritus Fellow at St. Antony’s College, the University of Oxford, UK, and Professor Emeritus of Global Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK ‘The definitive account of Spanish economic growth since 1850, based firmly on a magisterial reconstruction of that country’s national accounts and an unrivalled knowledge of both Spanish and global economic history of the period.’ —Stephen Broadberry, Professor of Economic History at Nuffield College, the University of Oxford, UK
This book extends the original concept of the “calcium paradox” discovery, herein compiling more than 300 references in the field of calcium ion (Ca2+/cAMP) signalling pathways, neurotransmission and neurodegeneration, and neurological and psychiatric diseases. In this second edition, novel illustrations and tables (highlighting current medicines for treating these diseases, including their mechanism of action) offer improved insights into the concepts for students and clinicians. The description of other neurodegenerative diseases (Spinal muscular atrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Huntington´s disease) also adds further information with regards to treating these diseases. The growing increment in the life expectancy of the world's population has increased concern about age-related neurological diseases (neurodegenerative diseases), such as Alzheimer’s (AD) and Parkinson’s (PD) diseases, among others. It is now well-recognized that an imbalance of intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis contributes to the pathogenesis of neurological diseases like neurodegenerative diseases, including AD and PD, and others. Healthy brain aging can be promoted by regular exercise, moderation in caloric intake and engaging in intellectually challenging activities. These lifestyle factors may stabilize neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis. The discovery of the role of the “calcium paradox” due to the interaction between Ca2+ and cAMP signalling pathways (Ca2+/cAMP interaction) in neurotransmission, and neuroprotection, has subsidized the understanding of pathophysiology, and pharmacology, of the neurological and psychiatric diseases, opening a large pathway for the advancement of new pharmacological strategies for the treatment of these diseases. The proposal outlined in this book involves pharmaceuticals already approved, and may, in combination with improvements in lifestyle factors, allow sustained increments in the life quality of age-related neurological patients. Finally, this book briefly discusses other aspects of Ca2+/cAMP signalling pathways, such as their possible implications on cancer.
In Towards a New CISG, Leandro Tripodi discusses the aging and need for renovation of the 1980 Vienna Sales Convention. Changes in global political circumstances and to the economy of international sales of goods have rendered the 1980 CISG a dated legal instrument. Its recognized flexibility is not sufficient to cope with past and, especially, with future changes brought about by the introduction of new technologies affecting all kinds of goods subject to trade. In light of the challenges posed by 21st-century commerce, Dr. Tripodi proposes the adoption of a Convention on the International Sale of Goods and Services (CISGS). The idea of a new convention is based on the following facts: 1) goods and services are no longer as distinguishable as they were in 1980; 2) sales of goods and sales (i.e., the provision) of services are not as easy to apportion as the CISG supposes and can hardly continue to be treated separately by the legal sources of international trade.
Using financial statement data from the Thomson Reuter’s Worldscope database for 22,333 non-financial firms in 52 advanced and emerging economies, this paper examines how fiscal stimulus (i.e., changes in structural deficit) interacted with sectoral business cycle sensitivity affected corporate profitability during the recovery period of the global financial crisis (GFC). Using cross-sectional analyses, our findings indicate that corporate profitability improved significantly after the GFC fiscal stimulus, especially in manufacturing, utilities and retail sectors. Firm size and leverage are also found to be significant in explaining changes in corporate profitability.
This book introduces readers to the basic concepts of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and its most important analysis algorithms using a hands-on approach based on the open-source RHRV software. HRV refers to the variation over time of the intervals between consecutive heartbeats. Despite its apparent simplicity, HRV is one of the most important markers of the autonomic nervous system activity and it has been recognized as a useful predictor of several pathologies. The book discusses all the basic HRV topics, including the physiological contributions to HRV, clinical applications, HRV data acquisition, HRV data manipulation and HRV analysis using time-domain, frequency-domain, time-frequency, nonlinear and fractal techniques. Detailed examples based on real data sets are provided throughout the book to illustrate the algorithms and discuss the physiological implications of the results. Offering a comprehensive guide to analyzing beat information with RHRV, the book is intended for masters and Ph.D. students in various disciplines such as biomedical engineering, human and veterinary medicine, biology, and pharmacy, as well as researchers conducting heart rate variability analyses on both human and animal data.
The Zapatistas of Chiapas and the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST) of Brazil are often celebrated as shining examples in the global struggle against neoliberalism. But what have these movements achieved for their members in more than two decades of resistance and can any of these achievements realistically contribute to the rise of a viable alternative? Through a perfect balance of grassroots testimonies, participative observation and consideration of key debates in development studies, agrarian political economy, historical sociology and critical political economy, Land and Freedom compares, for the first time, the Zapatista and MST movements. Casting a spotlight on their resistance to globalizing market forces, Vergara-Camus gets to the heart of how these movements organize themselves and how territorial control, politicization and empowerment of their membership and the decommodification of social relations are key to understanding their radical development potential.
Carrera and Dunleavy provide a crystal clear and comprehensive account of the complex issues involved in how best to improve the productivity of government services. They offer a nuanced but powerful explanation of productivity puzzles, conundrums and dilemmas in the public sector. But they also offer solutions to many of these problems. Finally, I have found a text on public economics that makes sense, gives genuine management insights and offers real suggestions to practitioners as to what to do next.' – Barry Quirk, Chief Executive, London Borough of Lewisham, UK 'This book presents a welcome and sobering analysis of productivity performance in UK central government – a subject that has received remarkably little serious academic attention up to now, in spite of decades of general commentary on managerialism.' – Christopher Hood, All Souls College, UK 'Leandro Carrera and Patrick Dunleavy have performed an amazing feat in this book through their rigorous examination of a thorny topic that has dogged pundits and academics alike. Just how efficient is government and how well does it do its job? As a result of an impressive – but accessible – set of data analyses, the authors make an authoritative attack on the proponents of the New Public Management, and offer some clear recommendations for reform based on better use of new technology.' – Peter John, University College London, UK Productivity is essentially the ratio of an organization's outputs divided by its inputs. For many years it was treated as always being static in government agencies. In fact productivity in government services should be rising rapidly as a result of digital changes and new management approaches, and it has done so in some agencies. However, Dunleavy and Carrera show for the first time how complex are the factors affecting productivity growth in government organizations – especially management practices, use of IT, organizational culture, strategic mis-decisions and political and policy churn. With government budgets under stress in many countries, this pioneering book shows academics, analysts and officials how to measure outputs and productivity in detail; how to cope with problems of quality variations; and how to achieve year-on-year, sustainable improvements in the efficiency of government services.
Social Tagging Systems are web applications in which users upload resources (e.g., bookmarks, videos, photos, etc.) and annotate it with a list of freely chosen keywords called tags. This is a grassroots approach to organize a site and help users to find the resources they are interested in. Social tagging systems are open and inherently social; features that have been proven to encourage participation. However, with the large popularity of these systems and the increasing amount of user-contributed content, information overload rapidly becomes an issue. Recommender Systems are well known applications for increasing the level of relevant content over the “noise” that continuously grows as more and more content becomes available online. In social tagging systems, however, we face new challenges. While in classic recommender systems the mode of recommendation is basically the resource, in social tagging systems there are three possible modes of recommendation: users, resources, or tags. Therefore suitable methods that properly exploit the different dimensions of social tagging systems data are needed. In this book, we survey the most recent and state-of-the-art work about a whole new generation of recommender systems built to serve social tagging systems. The book is divided into self-contained chapters covering the background material on social tagging systems and recommender systems to the more advanced techniques like the ones based on tensor factorization and graph-based models.
