Camilla Bergland has never called anywhere home, happy to be tied to no one and no place. A citizen of the world, she thinks the only real roots she has is her grandparents’ lake cottage in Wheaton, where she spent every summer of her nomadic childhood. So when her grandparents need help, she volunteers to spend the summer with them while she figures out her next move. What she didn’t anticipate was relishing the precious time with her grandparents despite her grandmother’s increasingly heartbreaking Alzheimer’s, small-town life, and reconnecting with childhood friends. All roads in Wheaton seem to lead to Jake Abram, her childhood crush and the person she spent her summers following around, but the kindhearted Jake she had idolized seventeen years ago has become a different person. He’s rude, edgy, and likes to remind Camilla that while she’s been traveling the globe, she’s also been neglecting her grandparents and their growing needs. Unfortunately, Jake’s the only one who can help her fix up her grandparents’ rundown lakefront cottage. Before long, she’s made a deal with the devil. He’ll help Camilla renovate the cottage in exchange for her decorating his lake home next door. The more time they spend together, the more she remembers why she used to like him back in the day. But can their growing attraction survive the secrets he’s keeping and Camilla’s determination to always leave before she can get hurt?
Lydia runs her own B&B and restaurant in the tourist town of Lake Hope, in Central Washington. Though she works all the time, she enjoys the challenge. Family and good friends keep her spirits up, but no special someone that rocks her world. Just guests and customers that come through regularly, including her least favorite, the retired principal of the local high school that everyone hates. When the principal turns up dead, stabbed by one of the letter openers that Lydia sells right there at the gift shop of her B&B, of course the police turn their attention to her. Not just the local cops, either, but the (alright, admittedly dreamy) detective they bring in from the city. What can Lydia do to clear not only her name, but her friends? Lots of twists and turns abound, as well as fabulous advice from her dear gay uncles: Ed, Alan, and their cat, Poe. The Purloined Letter Opener introduces the marvelously charming community of Lake Hope, located in the heart of Washington State's wine country. Meet its quirky occupants, solve a mystery or two, and yeah, maybe find that someone special as well.

This is the story of the daughter of a survivor of the Holocaust. It is a simple but exquisite retelling of the first twenty two years of her life. Learning about her familys past is only a part of the struggle, she also has to come to grips with the fact that the mother she knows as her own claims she is not her child! In addition to weaving a story, the fabric of which is rich and vibrant, Leah also designed the montages that accompany each chapter from her pictures and her large stamp collection. The montages give the reader a second story, historical and exciting!
In northwestern Nevada, the waters of the Truckee, Carson, and Walker river systems are fought over by competing interests: agriculture, industry, Native Americans and newer residents, and environmentalists. Much of the conflict was caused by the Newlands Project, completed in 1915, the earliest federal water reclamation scheme. Diverting these waters destroyed vital wetlands, polluted groundwater, nearly annihilated the cui-ui and the Lahontan cutthroat trout, and threatened the existence of Pyramid Lake. Water Politics in Northern Nevada examines the Newlands Project, its unintended consequences, and decades of litigation over the abatement of these problems and fair allocation of water. Negotiations and federal legislation brought about the Truckee River Operating Agreement in 2008. This revised edition brings the reader up to date on the implementation of the agreement, including ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance Pyramid Lake. The second edition now also includes a discussion of the Walker River basin, following a major project undertaken to address concerns about the health and viability of Walker Lake. The approaches taken to save these two desert treasures, Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake, are offered as models for resolving similar water-resource conflicts in the West. Leah J. Wilds’s study is crucial reading for students and scholars of water politics and environmental issues, not just in Nevada but throughout the western United States.

Ever since her boat drifted up against the mammoth docks in Milwaukee's harbor, Leah Dobkin has been enthralled by the evolution of the port and the city so firmly moored to it. From an era when it was a "Milwaukee Miracle" to make landfall without losing luggage to a promising future powered by alternative energy, Soul of a Port is steered by that same sense of wonder. And since the port's story is not just one of nuts, bolts and cranes, Dobkin's narrative is also well crewed by the characters who have given the place such a fascinating legacy. Settle in for an entertaining passage that includes a longshoreman's poetry, the Milwaukee Clipper's recipe for prime rib, a tugboat ghost story and much, much more.
