The authors provide detailed descriptions of key natural areas to visit, where a traveler might explore limestone caves or glimpse some of the country’s twenty-seven monkey and ape species and more than 850 bird species. In this book, Phan Le-Ha identifies and discusses four growing self-sustained/sustaining fundamental phenomena in transnational education (TNE), namely (1) the planned, evolving and transformative mediocrity behind the endorsement of English-medium education legitimized by the interactive Asia-the West relationship; (2) the strategic employment of the terms ‘Asia/Asian’ and ‘West/Western’ by all stakeholders in their perceptions and construction of choice, quality, rigour, reliability and attractiveness of programs, courses, and locations; (3) the adjusted desire for an imagined (and often misinformed) ‘West’ among various stakeholders of transnational education; and (4) the assigned and self-realized ownership of English by otherwise normally on-the-margin groups of speakers. A focus on how these phenomena impact questions of identity and desire in TNE is a running theme. The above phenomena are discussed against the backdrop of ‘the rise of Asia’ sentiment and how this sentiment has played out in interactions and relationships between ‘the West’ and ‘Asia’ and among Asian institutions and various entities. Phan Le-Ha’s examination of the identified phenomena in TNE has been informed by her multi-layered engagement with the dialectic of the Asia-the West relationship, her critical take on certain pro-Asia and decolonisation scholarship, and her interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to theorise the field and the specific topic under scrutiny. Phan Le-Ha shows that the current Asia chooses (not necessarily by force but largely by will and often with an informed and well-articulated agency) to go with the idea of the West and often desires an affiliation with the West either directly or indirectly, something that is getting more intense in the context of globalization, regionalization, and commercialization of education. The rise of Asia has made the idea of the West even more looked-for in Asia. TNE in Asia, in many ways, is the transforming and dynamic transit point, a layover that facilitates entry into a wanted destination – the West and/or the idea of the West. The West and Asia need one another more than ever in the context of the internationalization and commercialization of higher education. What’s more, the West and Asia have hardly ever been mutually exclusive but have rather been in an eventful love-and-obsession relationship with each other. This is the very dialectic proposition that Phan Le Ha takes throughout this book while paying specific attention to transnational higher education in the greater Asian region including the Middle East, following her several research projects conducted in the region since 2005 to date. This book examines how the interaction between political and economic factors under Doi Moi has shaped Vietnam's China policy and bilateral relations since the late 1980s. After providing a historical background, the book examines the conflicting effects that Doi Moi has generated on bilateral relations. It demonstrates that Vietnam's economic considerations following the adoption of Doi Moi contributed decidedly to the Sino-Vietnamese normalization in 1991 as well as the continuous improvements in bilateral ties ever since. At the same time, Vietnam's economic activities in the South China Sea and China's responses have intensified bilateral rivalry and put their ties under considerable strains. The book goes on to argue that Doi Moi has indeed brought Vietnam newfound opportunities to develop a multi-level omni-directional hedging strategy against China. Vietnamese Americans have transformed the social, cultural, economic, and political life of Orange County, California. Previously, there were Vietnamese international students, international or war brides, or military personnel living in the United States, but the majority arrived as refugees and immigrants after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Although they are lumped together as "refugees," Vietnamese Americans are diverse in terms of their class, ethnic, regional, religious, linguistic, and ideological backgrounds. Their migration path varied, and they often struggled with resettling in a new homeland and rebuilding their lives. They are dispersed throughout the country, but many are concentrated in central Orange County, where three cities--Westminster, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana--have "Welcome to Little Saigon" signs. They constitute the largest population of Vietnamese outside of Vietnam and have created flourishing residential neighborhoods and bustling commercial centers and contribute to the political and cultural life of the region. This book captures snapshots of Vietnamese life in Orange County over the span of 40 years and shows a dynamic, vibrant community that is revitalizing the region.

This book compares the nature and practice of internationalisation of the curriculum at the policy, institutional, and classroom levels in Vietnam and Australia: the former an Asian, developing, and sending country of international students, and the latter an Anglophone, developed country, and a major education export provider. By examining curriculum internationalisation practices in these two vastly different socio-cultural contexts, the book contributes to the understanding of the magnitude and the range of differences regarding national and institutional responses to the common call for curriculum internationalisation. It addresses the impacts of the latest technological, political, economic, and sociocultural developments and COVID-19 on higher education internationalisation, as well as the digitalisation of international education. Crucially, it responds to a critical gap in the literature by not only investigating curriculum internationalisation policies and their implementation, but how faculty staff and students experience and engage with internationalisation of the curriculum in their home context, and how they position themselves and are positioned by the structural conditions with regard to curriculum internationalisation. The authors utilise document analysis, in-depth interviews, and focus groups from a four-year research project. The research employs a unique conceptual framework combining practice architectures theory and Barnett and Coate’s conceptualisation of curriculum as knowing-acting-being. This book presents a historical and ethnographic study of changing mangrove management in northern Vietnam over the past 100 years, grounded in a case study in the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. The book shows that three primary socio-economic dynamics have affected mangroves: enclosure movements that have restricted access by different user communities over time, such as the exclusion of women; changing valuation of mangroves and their products and services; and social and class differentiation caused by privatization of once common resources. The result of these pressures have been erosions of norms, rules, and collective action to protect and nurture mangroves, leading to widespread loss of coastal forests. Sustainable mangrove management will require attention to these dynamics to address current-day land conflicts. The book will be of interest to policy-makers, practitioners, and academics and students in forest policy, management and governance; rural livelihoods; and globalization and agrarian change.
Moment Theory is not a new subject; however, in classical treatments, the ill-posedness of the problem is not taken into account - hence this monograph. Assuming a "true" solution to be uniquely determined by a sequence of moments (given as integrals) of which only finitely many are inaccurately given, the authors describe and analyze several regularization methods and derive stability estimates. Mathematically, the task often consists in the reconstruction of an analytic or harmonic function, as is natural from concrete applications discussed (e.g. inverse heat conduction problems, Cauchy's problem for the Laplace equation, gravimetry). The years between the signature of the Paris "peace accords" in 1972 and the final collapse of South Vietnam in 1975 are usually neglected. Very often, they are little more than a footnote in histories of the Vietnam War. This does a great disservice to the fighting men of South Vietnam, especially the infantry, Rangers, airborne troops and Marines who fought long, bravely and under great handicaps and hardships in defense of their country. This history of the South Vietnamese armed forces operations between 1972 and 1975 reveals that during 1973 they had the upper hand in conflicts with the North Vietnamese. It was the abrupt end of American economic and material support in 1974 that doomed their efforts and brought about their eventual defeat. This period also saw Soviet and Chinese aid to North Vietnam transform the NVA from a largely light infantry army to a mechanized tank- and artillery-heavy combined arms force that so greatly outgunned the ARVN.

Major General Le Minh Dao was the Commander of the 18th Infantry Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). At Xuan Loc, he became the ground commander during the final Battle for Saigon. A highly respected officer, known for his dogged determination, he held off the North Vietnamese for three weeks in April of 1975, before the ultimate fall of Saigon on April 30th. Dao was captured and spent 17 years in so-called “re-education” camps, before being released in 1992 and then given political asylum in the United States in 1993. In Children of Hope, The Story of Le Minh Dao, Michelle Chen, one of Major General Dao’s nine children, tells her father’s tale, through audio tapes recorded with him in his later years. In addition, the story of the rest of her family’s escape to freedom, through her own recollections and those of her mother and her oldest sister, is relived. The thoughts of two American military colleagues of her father conclude a moving firsthand account of life in Vietnam before, during and after the Fall of Saigon, a world event that touched so many lives.
