This collection of poems begins with the Sonoran Desert, a return to personal and social histories. Poems crisscross the desert to bear witness to the live repercussions of past and contemporary events, from Bisbee, Arizona, in 1917 to the border country one hundred years later. The vision widens to chart a contemplative orientation between the desert as a place of refuge and beauty, and the desert, in Thomas Merton's words, as "the country of madness." The elegiac spirit that runs through the collection is the same one that searches for tenors of human connection and solidarity. Children play a central role in this project. Traveling far beyond the southwest, from Olaszfalu, Hungary, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, histories and communities are experienced as interspersing realities. Poems seek to be responsive to and responsible for memory in its many iterations, including the birth of language itself, so that the meaning of home ground can be revealed. In this way, the desert is both a geographic place as well as an interior, more expansive, and difficult to define terrain, a literal and figurative desert.

This book explores teachers’ cognitions about the teaching of writing in English as a foreign language (EFL) and their teaching practice, as well as factors influencing the formation and reformation process of their cognition. Taking stock of Bakhtin’s dialogism as the theoretical framework, the authors argue that the formation and reformation of teacher cognition is a dialogic process. A systematic analysis of participating teachers’ cognition formation and re-formation process suggests the highly individual nature of teachers’ cognitions. EFL researchers and teachers, teacher educators, teacher education policymakers, university administrators and EFL textbook writers could draw on the findings of the study to provide better resources to implement the teaching of EFL writing more effectively. The study has adopted a mixed-methods approach, whose quantitative results show the patterns and differences of teacher cognition among teachers of different backgrounds and with different schooling, education and working experiences. The qualitative findings show in detail teachers' cognition formation and reformation processes and the factors contributing to such processes, revealing convergence and divergence of teachers’ stated cognitions, with a focus on the discrepancy between teacher cognition and teaching practice. These are useful lenses through which researchers and teachers will find significant implications for offering EFL writing instruction more effectively.

Highball is an old signal from the train conductor to engineer that the train was clear to start from its stop and proceed at speed. Two green balls, one above the other, were the visual signal. Railroads were running long before motion pictures. Soon after silent movies were invented, directors liked trains in their films as railroading became an important business for America, passengers, and freight trains. From the beginning, Hollywood loved trains. In the book are over 450 films with the title, the year distributed, director, cast, producer/distributer, and an overview, which set forth the key train link. Hollywood produced all sort/type of films: comedy, mystery, drama, Western, war, adventure, crime, construction, musical, and epic with combinations of genre. Every film in the book has a railroad link or connection of some sort, which makes this a stand-alone edition. Movies included begin in the Silent Era, 1920s, and continue to the present day. The Hollywood Golden Age through World War II produced great films and continued using different techniques and emphasis. Dangerous cargoes, revivals, scenarios, and technology reflect the extraordinary genius of moviemakers today. With jet aircraft, passenger train travel declined to the extent that passenger trains became too expensive for America’s railroads to operate. In 1971, Congress created Amtrak, a quasi-public corporation, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. Freight continued with the railroads, which today consist of five major train, class I companies: CSX, NS (Norfolk Southern), BNSF (Burlington and Santa Fe), UP (Union Pacific), and KCS (Kansas City Southern). Canadian Pacific (CP) operates both passenger and freight trains. Movies produced overseas are included with the United Kingdom being a large contributor to the book. The reference book is a must for all railroaders and movie lovers to recall their favorites and to see movies that they missed. All aboard!
