The process, however, is not inexorable, but can be aborted if understood.

The Qing dynasty office purchase system (juanna), which allowed individuals to pay for appointments in the government, was regarded in traditional Chinese historiography as an inherently corrupt and anti-meritocratic practice. It enabled participants to become civil and military officials while avoiding the competitive government-run examination systems. Lawrence Zhang’s groundbreaking study of a broad selection of new archival and other printed evidence—including a list of over 10,900 purchasers of offices from 1798 and narratives of purchase—contradicts this widely held assessment and investigates how observers and critics of the system, past and present, have informed this questionable negative view. The author argues that, rather than seeing office purchase as a last resort for those who failed to obtain official appointments via other means, it was a preferred method for wealthy and well-connected individuals to leverage their social capital to the fullest extent. Office purchase was thus not only a useful device that raised funds for the state, but also a political tool that, through literal investments in their positions and their potential to secure status and power, tied the interests of official elites ever more closely to those of the state.

Mother goddess as Mariological shrine healing joined with natural and demonic magic, and esoteric energy psi. Alongside these the Holy Spirit has raised up genuine healers and their ministries. Modern healing is marked by energy counterfeits and faith healing, the latter especially accompanied by trance, false prophecy, and psi transformations. True divine healing can be recovered when Christians repudiate nature gods, reject false prophecy, and restore proper eschatology.

The Leviathan Factor tells the incredible story of how Satan, created as Lucifer the morning star, self-transformed into Leviathan, God's serpentine arch foe. When he tried to achieve immortality by tweaking creation's lowest-level laws (a sophisticated computer/automaton) he created death instead. As the serpent he reappeared in the Genesis tree of good and evil, where he seduced humans to attempt immortality apart from covenant with God. Leviathan is responsible for the false belief that we each have an inner divine spark which, when reconnected to our ego, awakens our true inherent divinity. Unfortunately he and his demonic spirits also impact our minds, bodies, and environment as psi. A few of the many markers of these demonic psi are levitation, telepathy, telekinesis, deja vu, emotional oppressions, poltergeist activities, past lives' "memories," voices and visions, near death and out-of-body experiences, and trance channeling. When Vicente Fox was elected Mexico&’s president in 2000, the world&’s most enduring twentieth-century authoritarian regime finally came to an end. In this book Paul Haber explains how urban popular movements contributed to such a historic transition. In the 1960s Mexico&’s urban poor, effectively incorporated into institutionalized forms of clientelism and cooptation, were perceived as passive and acquiescent. Their situation changed during the 1970s, Haber shows, as popular movements&—led largely by young people inspired by the revolutionary ideals of Mexico&’s 1960s student movement&—took the first steps toward mobilizing the urban poor in what would develop into the full-scale political protests of the 1980s. When Mexico&’s economic crisis came in the early 1980s, urban popular movements were in a position to play a major role in the growing democratic opposition. Haber, using a creative blend of ethnography and policy analysis, traces this history on a national level and with detailed reference to two key organizations, the Comit&é de Defensa Popular of Durango and the Asamblea de Barrios of Mexico City. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, many of Mexico&’s most important social leaders saw new opportunities in electoral politics, and the transformation from social movement to party politics began. Haber&’s study closely follows the urban dimensions of this history and spells out its implications not only for the urban poor but also for Mexico&’s nascent democracy.

Patriotism is loyalty to a group. We regard the person without it as paltry at best. Historically the size of the group to which most of us have been loyal has increased from the family to the tribe to the city to the state or province and now to the nation. Today our children use the Internet as if there were no such things as national borders. We all know the radioactive clouds, viruses, the clean air from healthy oceans and rainforests and the polluted air from uncaring human acts do not notice the fences and custom offices that mark off spaces as separate countries on our only beautiful planet. We have for the first time in history an opportunity and necessity to continue the great slow movement of patriotism toward inclusion of all human beings. This book is a handbook on how to do this: not to make our loyalty to our native country less but to make our loyalty to the entire human race more. The great Utopian goals have all failed and we have little interest in them today. The way to go forward is in small steps and actions that can be done without major changes in our everyday life. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote: "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." If enough of us light one candle each we will have a blazing light to guide us to a brighter future.
