Employing the first analysis of the entire population of any British town, this book examines how overseas migrants affected society and culture in South Shields near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. As American Melancholy reveals, if you read about depression anywhere today--medical journal, popular magazine, National Institute of Mental Health pamphlet, or pharmaceutical company drug promotional literature--you will find three main pieces of information either explicitly stated or strongly implied: depression is a disease (like any other physical disease); it is extraordinarily prevalent in the world; and it occurs about twice as frequently in women as in men. Yet, depression was not classified as a disease until the 1980 publication of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-III (DSM-III). How is it that such an illness, thought to affect between 14 and 17 million Americans, was not specifically defined until the late twentieth century? American Melancholy traces the growth of depression as an object of medical study and as a consumer commodity and illustrates how and why depression came to be such a huge medical, social, and cultural phenomenon. It is the first book to address gender issues in the construction of depression, explores key questions of how its diagnosis was developed, how it has been used, and how we should question its application in American society.

After a description of the new forms of globalization currently shaping our world, and of their possible spatial effects, the book highlights which European regions have in the past succeeded in taking advantage of globalization trends and identifies the major reasons for their success. The book also offers a prospective analysis utilizing scenarios based on different assumptions of how globalization trends will develop, identifying the regional winners and losers for each scenario. The analysis greatly benefits from a unique database which contains, among others, data on FDI by sector and professions at the regional Nuts-2 level for all 27 EU countries. A time-span of more than 10 years is covered, and scenarios are developed for the future development up to 2020.

This brief addresses the question of the various ways in which mental health-related issues have become police responsibility. It provides a detailed understanding of the myriad of ways in which police are often called upon to be the primary responder to mental health-related issues, well beyond the standard media images of individuals in extreme crisis. Drawing upon the results of two separate ethnographies of police practices in Canada, this volume examines how public policing has become entangled in cases of persons with mental illness (PMI). It examines two aspects of the police role and mandate that brings police officers into contact with individuals dealing with mental health disorders: public safety, and crime prevention and response. It explores police perceptions towards the roles they play in the lives of PMI, and police demands in these types of calls for service that have transformed aspects of public policing. Appropriate for policing researchers, law enforcement and public policymakers, this book presents the argument that tackling this matter requires knowledge of police involvement in situations with PMI, as well as a set of evidence-based policy options that will not generate additional resource or other strains.
This book looks at how the workplace was transformed through a greater awareness of the roles that germs played in English working lives from c.1880 to 1945. Cutting across a diverse array of occupational settings – such as the domestic kitchen, the milking shed, the factory, and the Post Office – it offers new perspectives on the history of the germ sciences. It brings to light the ways in which germ scientists sought to transform English working lives through new types of technical and educational interventions that sought to both eradicate and instrumentalise germs. It then asks how we can measure and judge the success of such interventions by tracing how workers responded to the potential applications of the germ sciences through their participation in friendly societies, trade unions, colleges, and volunteer organisations. Throughout the book, close attention is paid to reconstructing vernacular traditions of working with invisible life in order to better understand both the successes and failures of the germ sciences to transform the working practices and material conditions of different workplaces. The result is a more diverse history of the peoples, politics, and practices that went into shaping the germ sciences in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century England.

It contains a wide range of individual, managerial, and corporate cases, many with an international perspective. All cases have been classroom-tested at the Harvard Business School; most have been developed in the field rather than in the library. Nine new cases (of the total 53 cases) cover such topics as labor-management trust, product liability, foreign bribery, the Dow bankruptcy over breast implant lawsuits, and more. A new appendix, "Ethical Frameworks for Management," provides students with ethical frameworks for analysis and a second new Appendix, "Bridging East and West in Management Ethics," discusses certain basic similarities between Asian and Western ethical ideals.
Bloody-Minded Pigott is the biography of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Berkeley Pigott, who chalked up more battle experience and hair-raising exploits than most of his contemporaries. Pigott was a young army officer with limited private means so was fortunate to serve in a string of military campaigns from his commission at the outbreak of the Zulu War in 1879 until 1885, when he was promoted to brevet major. He was in the Mounted Infantry in South Africa, Egypt and the Sudan and played a key role in the 1885 Battle of Abu Klea. Though overlooked for a Victoria Cross in 1881, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) Award in 1888 for his service with the Yoni Expedition in Sierra Leone. Pigott also spent six years in India and escaped the tedium of garrison life first by hunting and capturing elephants for the Maharajah of Mysore, then serving as the commandant of Wellington Depot. As one of General Viscount Wolseley’s protégés he was seconded to serve in the 1896 Ashanti Expedition and then as British Resident at Kumasi. Nicknamed ‘bloody-minded’ for disagreeing with the decision of his superior officers, this was a character trait that would ultimately cost Pigott dearly. Bloody Minded Pigott uses previously unpublished material to add fresh detail even to well researched topics such as the 1st Anglo-Boer War and the Nile Expedition and also provides some insight into the role of administrators of fledgling British colonies.
