Rather than viewing the history of American capitalism as the unassailable ascent of large-scale corporations and free competition, American Fair Trade argues that trade associations of independent proprietors lobbied and litigated to reshape competition policy to their benefit. At the turn of the twentieth century, this widespread fair trade movement borrowed from progressive law and economics, demonstrating a persistent concern with market fairness - not only fair prices for consumers but also fair competition among businesses. Proponents of fair trade collaborated with regulators to create codes of fair competition and influenced the administrative state's public-private approach to market regulation. New Deal partnerships in planning borrowed from those efforts to manage competitive markets, yet ultimately discredited the fair trade model by mandating economy-wide trade rules that sharply reduced competition. Laura Phillips Sawyer analyzes how these efforts to reconcile the American tradition of a well-regulated society with the legacy of Gilded Age of laissez-faire capitalism produced the modern American regulatory state.

This book contains three sections. Part I includes an introductory chapter and an applied chapter on conducting a risk assessment. Part II provides a description of how the measures were organized and quick-view tables that provide easy access to measures with enough information to allow for an estimate of the likelihood that reading additional information about a particular measure would prove fruitful. Measures are organized alphabetically into tables for measures of anger, aggression, or violence. Each of the tables provides the name of the measure, the purpose for which the measure was developed, and the targeted population. The tables also provide information on the method of assessment, the amount of time required to use the measure, and the page number where additional information is available. Part II also contains the review of each measure. Part III provides examples of measures that can be copied for research or clinical purposes.

Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets. Leonardo da Vinci I would like to open this preface by uttering my belief that there is no wiser human than one who admits his oblivion and fights against it a perpetual battle. Learning is a process which infuses one’s development in any field. To learn and teach successfully is to master cognitive components which correspond to your learning methodology. Conquering fitting strategy is work half completed, the other half remains to its delivery and grasping through attention, memory, and thinking. Language learning as one field of learning is subject to receptive and productive skills which enables one’s competence to comprehend written and verbal material through reading and iv listening, in addition to producing written and verbal information through writing and speaking skills. Furthermore, foreign language learning is learning a new world alongside its affecting a new approach to your own world. Nevertheless, learning a language is not equally practical for everyone and can be contesting experience due to age, learning/teaching strategies, the similarity with the mother tongue and target language, motivation, level of interest, and need, consequently, learner personality. This book comprises five chapters which scrutinize learning, respectfully language learning under various circumstances and complexities, offering a solution to issues of dyslexic students, dementia patients, language acquisition and communication difficulties in the classroom, children’s learning process in general, and the dichotomy on literary work incorporation in foreign language teaching in particular. The Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region has the undesirable distinction of being the world's most violent region, with 24.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The magnitude of the problem is staggering and persistent. Of the top 50 most violent cities in the world, 42 are in LAC. In 2010 alone, 142,302 people in LAC fell victim to homicide, representing 390 homicides per day and 4.06 homicides every 15 minutes. Crime disproportionately affects young men aged 20 to 24, whose homicide rate of 92 per 100,000 nearly quadruples that of the region. The focus of Crime Prevention in Latin America and the Caribben is to identify policy interventions that, whether by design or indirect effect, have been shown to affect antisocial behavior early in life and patterns of criminal offending in youth and adults. Particular attention is devoted to recent studies that rigorously establish a causal link between the interventions in question and outcomes. This publication adopts a lifecycle perspective and argues that as individuals progress through different stages of the lifecycle, not only do different sets of risk factors arise and take more prominence, but their interactions and interdependencies shape human behavior. These interactions and the relative importance of different sets of risk factors identify relevant margins that can effectively be targeted by prevention policies, not only early in life, but throughout the lifecycle. Indeed prevention can never start too early, nor start too late, nor be too comprehensive.
