Lawman, soldier, hired gunman, detective, outlaw, and assassin, this darkly enigmatic figure has fascinated Americans ever since his death by hanging the day before his forty-third birthday. In this masterful historical biography, Larry Ball, a distinguished historian of western lawmen and outlaws, presents the definitive account of Horn’s career. Horn became a civilian in the Apache wars when he was still in his early twenties. He fought in the last major battle with the Apaches on U.S. soil and chased the Indians into Mexico with General George Crook. He bragged about murdering renegades, and the brutality of his approach to law and order foreshadows his controversial career as a Pinkerton detective and his trial for murder in Wyoming. Having worked as a hired gun and a range detective in the years after the Johnson County War, he was eventually tried and hanged for killing a fourteen-year-old boy. Horn’s guilt is still debated. To an extent no previous scholar has managed to achieve, Ball distinguishes the truth about Horn from the numerous legends. Both the facts and their distortions are revealing, especially since so many of the untruths come from Horn’s own autobiography. As a teller of tall tales, Horn burnished his own reputation throughout his life. In spite of his services as a civilian scout and packer, his behavior frightened even his lawless companions. Although some writers have tried to elevate him to the top rung of frontier gun wielders, questions still shadow Horn’s reputation. Ball’s study concludes with a survey of Horn as described by historians, novelists, and screenwriters since his own time. These portrayals, as mixed as the facts on which they are based, show a continuing fascination with the life and legend of Tom Horn.

In addition, there is additional history involved that may not be common knowledge to everybody. People have said I just love Joseph Smith and yet why? Did he break the law repeatedly, as is shown in this work? Was he morally correct? Did he engage in sexual unions with women who were married to other men at the same time? Did he simply copy other men in his area who claimed to have revelations from God? Why is his story of God appearing to him very similar to other mens claims that were already published in his own hometown? Did he really translate gold plates? Why did he deny he practiced polygamy while he was actually living in polygamy at the time?

Much less has been written about the moral, spiritual and existential pain that soldiers experience as a consequence of carrying through the stated purpose of war for the common soldier - kill the enemy until the war is won. Based on his 20+ years' experience of treating combat veterans, Dr Larry Dewey explores the war trauma and life adaptation of combatants over two decades of intensive treatment. He addresses moral, spiritual and existential issues while also attending to the important physiological and psychological symptoms. Using case material, thoughts, experiences and, literally, the words of 65 veterans of various wars, he portrays in depth and with meaningful detail the process of successful treatment and the eventual positive adaptation for these veterans. The volume explores the deep pain and burden of killing and the role of propaganda and love in starting and maintaining war. Through the veterans' stories the author portrays the personal war of the ordinary combatant and the burden of guilt, grief and pain they often carry afterwards. The second part tackles the actual healing process, and part three explores the concepts of sin, confession, mercy, forgiveness, redemption and love, and how veterans have used them in aiding their own recovery from war's grief and moral pain. The poetic verses in this book express some of my beliefs on how faith in God can turn things around when dealing with life's ups and downs. I have shared these verses with many in the course of my duties as a spiritual counselor. I use many of them on a daily basis to remind people about the power of God and his word. Although they are original verses, they are spiritually inclined, inspired by the Bible. They are designed to provide courage and strength as we encounter life's trial and tribulations. This book is the result of the encouragement and inspiration he has received to publish his works. Elder Larry D. Harris was born in Matthews County, VA and at an early age moved to Gloucester County, VA where he attended public school. He obtained his GED at Atterbury Job Corp. in Edinburgh, IN. and then went to Brooklyn, NY to attend Erasmus School for the Gifted. While in New York City he performed with local bands such as Crown Heights Affair. Although he became a professional performing artist, he served in the Marine Corp., moonlighting as a commercial artist, singer and fashion designer. During college in Newport News, VA, he presented portraits to renowned individuals such as: John F. Kennedy; Jimmy Carter; Diana Ross; Lyndon B. Johnson; the Isley Brothers; Aretha Franklin; Mohammad Ali; Bishop S. Green and Elvis Presley. Ordained as Elder Larry D. Harris in June 1997, he founded Warpath Ministries, a telephone ministry, providing spiritual counseling; spreading the Word of God nationwide.
