Jessie Hightower, a former African American marine, is doing his best to move forward with his life in Philadelphia when he sees a news broadcast about the recent disappearance of thousands of men and women nationwide. Despite launching an intense investigation, authorities at several government agencies have no idea what happened to them. A few days later, the reasons why become evident when the sky explodes in light and alien spacecrafts emerge from the clouds. Aliens have finally answered the call sent from Earth. As they emerge from their craft, problems arise. They are unfriendly, want to inhabit the planet, and intend to rid Earth of all humans through a lethal virus they let fall like snowflakes. Moments later, they head back to their craft and disappear into the clouds. As the death count rapidly rises, Earth’s inhabitants become desperate for answers. When Jessie and the rest of his black brothers and sisters discover they are immune to the virus, they realize they are the only ones capable of saving the human population from extinction. When the aliens eventually return to Earth, will they find more death and destruction or a human population determined to beat the odds?

What did David O. McKay say about the theory of evolution, or George Albert Smith about Saints thinking for themselves? Why did Relief Society president Eliza R. Snow and others write a heartfelt letter of appreciation to the governor of the Utah territory? With fifteen new letters, this revised edition of A Treasury of Latter-day Saint Letters answers these and other intriguing questions through the words of early Church figures, from apostles to Joseph Smith's relatives. Historian Larry Morris, formerly with the Ensign and the Joseph Smith Papers, explains the historical context of each epistle and presents the text of the letter itself. Preserving the exact words and spelling of the writer, this inspiring and thought-provoking volume offers a glimpse into the personal lives and candid feelings of a host of prominent Church members--a rare view not often seen from the pulpit or in history books.
The story of the Scots-Irish is one of the struggles and achievements of an American immigrant group that existed for only a short period, whose descendants continued to make their marks on the young country for generations. From the North of Ireland to the backwoods of the American frontier, the tale of the Scots-Irish includes a massive exodus to the New World, where they founded communities in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and the Irish Tract of North Carolina during the Revolutionary War era. Containing nearly six thousand names of documented settlers of the primarily Scots-Irish settlements of Virginia and North Carolina, Chasing The Frontier includes materials from church records, military records, early wills and deeds, and newspapers of the time. For the frontier families, life was a daily test of endurance and hardship, but the Scots-Irish also found time for horseracing, gambling, and socializing, and the migration of this hardy race and the lure of the frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee led to the founding of churches and state charters, and elections to some of the highest offices in the country. Chasing the Frontier is a snapshot of everyday life for the pioneering Scots-Irish in early America.
This work digs into many questions with no firm answers. Simply reviewing the table of contents will show the many different questions that are looked into. In addition, there is additional history involved that may not be common knowledge to everybody. People have said I just love Joseph Smith and yet why? Did he break the law repeatedly, as is shown in this work? Was he morally correct? Did he engage in sexual unions with women who were married to other men at the same time? Did he simply copy other men in his area who claimed to have revelations from God? Why is his story of God appearing to him very similar to other mens claims that were already published in his own hometown? Did he really translate gold plates? Why did he deny he practiced polygamy while he was actually living in polygamy at the time?

In this book, Larry E. Morris complements the compelling story he began with The Fate of Corps, named a History Book Club selection and a Choice magazine Outstanding Academic Title. Illustrating how Thomas Jefferson’s vision of a sea-to-sea empire gave rise to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Morris in turn shows how the expedition impacted a host of fascinating individuals: John Colter, the first European to see Yellowstone, who helped William Clark create his master map of the West; John Jacob Astor, the prominent fur-trade entrepreneur who launched the second American trek to the Pacific; Ramsay Crooks, an “Astorian” adventurer present for the discovery of the Tetons, Hells Canyon, and South Pass who later became one of the most important merchants in the history of the fur trade; Thomas Hart Benton, a North Carolina native who went west after nearly killing Andrew Jackson in a gunfight and became the US Senate’s most powerful voice for Western expansion—and the father-in-law of “the Pathfinder,” John C. Fremont; and General Stephen Watts Kearny, whose conquest of California during the Mexican War fulfilled Jefferson’s vision of a nation that spanned the continent.
For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
