The greatest challenge facing most churches today isn't getting people through the front door--it's keeping them from leaving through the back door. In this book, Larry Osborne reveals what it takes to cultivate a "sticky" church and how to retain members while leading your church into even deeper levels of discipleship.
Church as I know it usually leaves deep parts of me dormant, unawakened, and untouched. I don't much like going. So, what now?" What's happening to the Church? Why are so many people who for decades have been faithful, steady churchgoers (and others who want to start going to church but can't seem to find one that meets their needs) losing interest in even attending church, let alone getting involved? What is fundamentally wrong with the "types" of churches (Seeker, Bible, Emergent, Liberal, Evangelical) that dot the religious landscape? Larry Crabb believes it is time to rethink the entire foundation and focus of what we know today as church -- everything we're doing and are wanting to see happen. In his most honest and vulnerable book to date, the author reveals his own struggles in this area and then offers a compelling vision of why God designed us to live in community with Him and others, and what the church he wants to be a part of looks like.
Have you ever wondered what the church would look like if Christians began to take the words of Jesus seriously--the words some Bibles print in red? What if Jesus actually meant for us to do the things he said? What if those who "believe in Jesus" really did value the things he valued? Would the church look different? Would your neighborhood stay the same? In Think Red, Larry Stoess takes a close look at the values, the vision, and the mission of Jesus, and then holds up a mirror for us to see if our communities look anything like Jesus. If we dare look in the mirror we may be inspired to leave behind our obsession with consumer-based religion and follow the way of Jesus. Those who do will be set free to imagine creative and whimsical expressions of community.
We Must Speak: Rethinking How We Communicate About Faith in the 21st Century Pray that I may declare (the message) boldly, as I must speak. - Ephesians 6:20 In We Must Speak, Larry Hollon addresses the communications crisis in mainline denominations and sounds a call to action for the church: Speak out in todays digital culture or risk irrelevance. Communications technology is connecting people in unprecedented ways, yet many mainline churches have been slow to adapt and have continued to lose members and status. Other voices and messages are filling the void, offering superficial entertainment and consumerism as poor substitutes for the good news of the church. By embracing communications ministry, churches can transform their communities, change lives and be the presence of Christ for a hurting world. Hollon shares success stories, a theologically grounded vision, and specific steps for local congregations and denominations to tap the power of communications. Larry Hollon sets out the case for why we need to maintain our voice in a world crowded with competing messages and often destructive values. - Mike McCurry, former White House press secretary

When a group of people practice something for two thousand years, the expectation is that they'd eventually get whatever it was they were committed to doing right. But the fact is that we as individuals and as a corporate community are still struggling with many of the issues that plagued the early church. Larry Shallenberger takes a fresh look at the book of Acts to help you gain a deeper understanding of how God moved in the early church and what that means for you today.
If you want something that will provide you with encouragement in a time of suffering or if you need an inspiration to better exercise your faith, then this is the ideal book to read. Dr. Larry D. Reid has penned a thought provoking dissertation that will challenge the local church to undergo an extreme makeover. He introduces a three-fold approach to personal problem-solving that he believes every local church should utilize, that is sure to promote holistic growth and development in the lives of the congregant and visitor alike. Dr. Reid unearths and challenges the outmoded and outdated methods that have offended many who have looked to the church for resolve. Being educated theologically and secularly has allowed Dr. Reid to skillfully bring this refreshing combination of spirituality and practicality that will enlighten the reader, reshape their thinking and broaden their knowledge of the local church and it's purpose in the community. In the strength of a reformer armed with the gift of authorship, Dr. Reid protests the hearty approval that many have given to the church with their shouts of amen, and commands a new cadence for reformers to sound. This 70,000 word novel, Randolph Jackson, Undercover(s) Expert, is a male fantasy. I have never read a male fantasy so I cant site some well know work. The protagonist in the story is forty-one, handsome and divorced years earlier. He has just retired from the Air Force where he was a Colonel in Intelligence. He speaks five foreign languages fluently, has a PhD in political science and was promoted years ahead of his contemporaries. So why quit such a successful career destined to bring him a star or two? Boredom! Jackson had been promoted out of action jobs he loved and relegated to a desk that he hated. Two years before retiring Jackson bought a beautiful home in Oregon from a just divorced friend. A few weeks before leaving the Pentagon for his new life, he shipped his household belongings to Oregon and as the story begins he is on the tail end of a cross country flight from Dulles International Airport to Portland, Oregon. In Portland he buys a new car and on a whim buys a $5.00 lottery ticket. A few weeks later he runs across the ticket in his wallet and checks the newspaper. Of course he has won $9 million after taxes. After a torrid but brief affair with his gorgeous neighbor, Jackson departs upon his longed for trip to Europe and where ever life takes him. In Germany he looks up a former colleague who just happens to be beautiful and smart. After financially assisting her with a project to assist the local military dependents children Jackson moves on to Italy. Here he is able to financially aid a young woman whose child has a physical abnormality that is repairable. Jackson then travels to the Netherlands where he once served in the military and runs across a Dutch man who was a fellow officer. The old friends young sister is introduced to Jackson and over the next few days he learns of her career expectations and is able to give her the money to begin her career in fashion design. Jackson goes next to Oslo, Norway where he saves an old mans life following a traffic accident. The injured mans emergency doctor is beautiful, single and quite open to Jacksons considerable charm. After a time, Jackson leaves the doctor enough money to pay for the old mans rehabilitation and then moves on to Sweden. On his way to Stockholm, Jackson comes upon two young, beautiful ladies stalled along the highway on their way to the big city. He drives them into the city and then sets them up in a spare bedroom in his suite. Over the next few days Jackson buys the girls appropriate clothes, finds them a nice apartment, paying the rent for the first six months and enrolls them in a three month modeling school, fulfilling their fondest dreams. Next, Jackson turns in his rental car and flies to London. On the flight he meets two flight attendants who show him London and a very good time in his suite. In a few days he grows weary of London and flies to Capetown, South Africa where the young lady he met in Italy lives. Realizing that although they love each other, their lives were so disparate they could never live together in South Africa where she is reluctant to leave. On the way to Moscow from Capetown, the Aeroflot flight has to conduct an emergency landing in Kiev, Ukraine. Jackson is a hero during the ensuing emergency, saving numerous lives but ends up in a Kiev hospital. His female doctor and he clash at first but end up on a river cruise. When Jackson learns about her professional aspirations, he provides her enough money to achieve these desires. When Jackson finally makes it to Moscow, thru a number of coincidences, meets the U.S. Ambassador who asks him to help shut down an arms dealer, selling illegally acquired Russian munitions to Middle Eastern countries to the detriment of the United States. With the help of the local CIA Station Chief Jackson manages to acquire enough evidence to give the Embassy enough information to convince the Russ
House to House documents how God transformed a small fellowship of young believers into a worldwide movement. DOVE Christian Fellowship International grew from 25 people to a cell church of over 2,300, and then transitioned into a family of small group churches and house churches that is now networking together throughout six continents. This field-tested book is a blueprint and training guide for believers, Christian leaders, and churches to make an impact on today s world, and serves as an invaluable tool to train potential leaders. The House to House model will inspire churches across the country, transforming them from individual congregations, large and small, into church-planting movements, encouraging many to start new churches to reach the coming harvest.
Learn the secrets to building and maintaining a healthy, productive, and unified ministry team that sticks together for the long haul. Serving as a church leader can be a tough calling. Whatever your role, odds are you've known your share of the frustration and disillusionment that comes with turf battles, conflicting vision, and marathon meetings. You may have asked yourself, "How did it get this way?" With twenty years of front-line ministry experience, Larry Osborne understands congregations (as baffling as they can sometimes be) and he know how the best-intentioned teams can become disrupted and disunified. With this book, he aims to shore up the foundation of a healthy team--what does a unified and thriving church leadership look like and how can it be achieved? Sticky Teams is divided into three main sections, dealing with key aspects of what it takes to develop long-term, efficient harmony: Landmines and Roadblocks exposes the organizational structures, policies, and traditions that can unintentionally sabotage even the best of teams. You'll discover strategies for managing conflicts and getting around obstacles. Equipped for Ministry explores what it takes to get everyone on the same page and headed in the same direction. Chapters deal with practical tips for board, staff, and congregational alignment. Communication examines what it takes to keep everyone on the same page, with a special emphasis on some especially dicey areas and issues of ministry, such as conversations about money. Whatever your situation; from start-up phase, to mid-sized, to megachurch, Osborne has been there. As the pastor of North Coast Church, he's walked his board, staff, and congregation through the process of becoming more genuinely unified, and, because of that, better able to carry out God's design for his church. With warm encouragement and insight, he shares expertise that most pastors and leadership teams learn only from long experience: how to invest the time to create church harmony and how to lead so that unity is maintained long-term.
With so many church planters seeking to be successful, many of the ways we measure success can lead to personal disappointment, frustration, comparisons, and even depression. This can result in church planters who quit and churches that close even before they really get started, potentially ruining a witness to an entire community. What if we redefined and clarified the biblical metrics for church planting in a way that replaces frustration with fire, and replaces disappointment with direction? What if we stopped the comparisons to steroid growth and replaced them with a better understanding of kingdom growth? In this lighthearted and encouraging book we will highlight each extraordinary aspect to church planting and detail the biblical metrics that can infuse in each planter a better understanding of success.

In today's frenetic society, people rarely develop intimate friendships. Instead, they spend their lives essentially disconnected from others, rushing through life content with brief visits and casual conversations. But what if one were to develop a community, a spiritual community, of people who walked with and supported each other through life's journey? A community of real friends who listened to each other's personal tragedies without merely trying to fix the problems, who encouraged and nurtured each other's strengths, and who accepted people for who they really are, instead of the image they try to portray. In Becoming a True Spiritual Community (formerly titled The Safest Place on Earth), Larry Crabb explores such a place, where God can heal disconnected people and allow them to reconnect with each other and, ultimately, with Him.
The clergy today faces mounting challenges in an increasingly secular world, where declining prestige makes it more difficult to attract the best and the brightest young Americans to the ministry. As Christian churches dramatically adapt to modern changes, some are asking whether there is a clergy crisis as well. Whatever the future of the clergy, the fate of millions of churchgoers also will be at stake. In Who Shall Lead Them?, prizewinning journalist Larry Witham takes the pulse of both the Protestant and Catholic ministry in America and provides a mixed diagnosis of the calling's health. Drawing on dozens of interviews with clergy, seminarians and laity, and using newly available survey data including the 2000 Census, Witham reveals the trends in a variety of traditions. While evangelicals are finding innovative paths to ministry, the Catholic priesthood faces a severe shortage. In mainline Protestantism, ministry as a second career has become a prominent feature. Ordination ages in the Episcopal and United Methodist churches average in the 40s today. The quest by female clergy to lead from the pulpit, meanwhile, has hit a "stained glass ceiling" as churches still prefer a man as the principal minister. While deeply motivated by the mystery of their "call" to ministry, America's priests, pastors, and ministers are reassessing their roles in a world of new debates on leadership, morality, and the powers of the mass media. Who Shall Lead Them? offers a valuable snapshot of this contemporary clergy drama. It will be required reading for everyone concerned about the rapidly shifting ground of our churches and the health of religion in America.
Together: Community as a Means of Grace addresses the concept of community as an avenue to a deeper relationship with God. Using an ecumenical Wesleyan approach, Duggins explores the concept of "God as community" to conclude that bringing people together in almost any setting allows them to grow in God's image. He frames this idea using the historical concept of the "means of grace": the ordinary ways in which people encounter God. Drawing heavily on the work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, Duggins begins with a reflection on the community-building aspects of traditional church. He then uses storytelling to introduce four common forms of community: community through work, community through food, community through children's schools and activities, and community through shared recreational activities. Together is intended to help Christian people embrace the freedom to experiment with alternative forms of Christian community. Duggins nudges the missional imagination of people who long for spiritual connection and growth, but for whom traditional church is not the answer. Using a "yes, and" approach, he shows that traditional church can empower and stand alongside new forms of community, each of which can act as a means of grace.
Distinctive Doctrine is a casual discussion of certain things in the New Testament that will be of interest mainly to Christians and particularly those who want to be recognized as distinctively scriptural in their thinking, doctrine and practice. The author speaks of ecclesiastical things from a distinctly Baptist point of view having been the Pastor of an independent, fundamental, sovereign grace, old landmark, missionary baptist congregation for 35 years. Some things covered in the book are The Nature of the Church, The New Testament Church defined, Organizing a Church, Adding and subtracting church members, The officers and ordinances of the church, The financing and government of the church, The doctrine and duties of the church, The name of the church, Baptist Briders, Sectarianism, and more.
One of the major reasons the Jews of Jesus' day did not recognize Him as their Messiah was their false traditions that blinded their understanding of the truth. The churches worldwide are falling for the same type of deception by Satan. This problem makes it difficult for the Holy Spirit to effectively use us for Jesus' glory. This book attempts to address some of these problems disguised as traditions. You can think of others.

Zealous faith can have a dangerous, dark side. While recent calls for radical Christians have challenged many to be more passionate about their faith, the down side can be a budding arrogance and self-righteousness that “accidentally” sneaks into our outlook. In Accidental Pharisees, bestselling author Larry Osborne diagnoses nine of the most common traps that can ensnare Christians on the road to a deeper life of faith. Rejecting attempts to turn the call to follow Christ into a new form of legalism, he shows readers how to avoid the temptations of pride, exclusivity, legalism, and hypocrisy, Larry reminds us that attempts to fan the flames of full-on discipleship and call people to Christlikeness should be rooted in love and humility. Christians stirred by calls to radical discipleship, but unsure how to respond, will be challenged and encouraged to develop a truly Christlike zeal for God.
Pastor, author, and leadership consultant unpacks instruction for church leaders found in 1 Peter 5:1-4 where they are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them. Some instruction is timeless. Regardless of the age in which we live, certain instruction carries no expiration on its relevance. Pastor, author, and leadership consultant, Larry Osborne has discovered this to be the case with instruction on how to be a good leader. The best, most practical advice comes from the Bible, and in particular, 1 Peter 5:1-4. It's in this short passage where leaders are exhorted to shepherd the flock among them. Unfortunately, most modern leaders have precious little experience tending sheep, and many of the implications that were well understood when Peter penned these words are lost on today's reader. Osborne finds the parallels to be numerous, well-worth reviewing and understanding anew. A shepherd leads them to water even when they fear it. A shepherd never allows one sick lamb to destroy the flock. A shepherd lays down his life for his sheep . . . When leaders truly understand Peter's words of exhortation to lead like a shepherd, then they will begin to see the path that leads them to Leading Well.
God's Amazing Normal is about the amazing impact that happens when Christ's followers get beyond their paralyzing self-focus, join Christ in His mission, and become intentional about being Christ's light into their own communities. "The message of this book comes from my life experience as a pastor. I shepherded a church where healthy believers expected to be involved in seeing others come to Christ. And it worked! The church was joyful because when there are new spiritual children life is always exciting and challenging." Larry DeWitt In 1976, Larry DeWitt, his wife, Beccy, three kids and a dog headed west to Southern California with a dream . . . to create a fresh model of church life in America that was Christ centered, Bible based, culturally relevant, and outreach oriented. God honored that dream. Calvary Community Church became one of the nation's leading models for the boomer generation . . . reaching literally thousands of families for Christ. After nearly 30 years as senior pastor of Calvary, Larry launched Cornerstone Network. The ministry of Cornerstone is based on the premise that our ultimate mission is to connect people to Jesus Christ as the Cornerstone of life. Larry also served as a national facilitator of pastoral ministries with Mission America Coalition, whose focus is to help leaders/pastors work together and "love their communities to Christ." In this capacity Larry has challenged and encouraged church leaders in more than 20 communities across the nation to a have a united focus on Christ and to engage every believer in an intentional lifestyle of: praying for people by name caring by serving and loving sharing when natural opportunities arise.

Called to be a Pastor: Why it Matters to Both Congregations and Clergy is a how-to resource with a memoir touch, describing the essential but delicate partnership between clergy and congregation. This partnership requires nurture and attention to detail if the relationship is to prosper. Indeed, the congregation often holds the fate of their pastor's ministry success, much the same way fertile earth holds the fate of a freshly planted seed. On the other hand, a congregation suffers when a pastor is not fully engaged or is incapable of guiding a congregation toward meeting its ministry objectives. Neither pastor nor congregation can serve their designated role without the other's full and active participation in extending God's kingdom. Laypersons and pastors may never see each other in quite the same way after reading Called to be a Pastor. This book captures the pastor/congregation insights that come from a successful pastoral career: First, as a church planter, later as a judicatory with oversight of thirty-five congregations, and, most recently, as a consultant to a broad range of denominations. First time readers have claimed this book to be thought provoking, inspirational, and enlightening!

At the end of February 2020, Larry and Ann Thomas left their home in Issaquah, Washington, for a three-week vacation visiting family in Colorado and Texas. News of the coronavirus pandemic was slowly spreading. By the middle of March 2020 the world had changed and the global pandemic was in full swing. The Thomases decided to shelter in place in Flower Mound, Texas, for the next six weeks. On March 17, 2020, when Larry returned to his work as the interim pastor at Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church in Sammamish, Washington, it was from a makeshift office in Texas, not his office in Sammamish. Working remotely, Pastor Thomas began organizing weekly virtual prayer gatherings and Bible studies. In order to connect with the congregation, he started writing pastoral letters as a way of reflecting on the intersection of faith, hope, and love while living through the pandemic. Lily Packed a Facemask is a chronicle of one pastor's commitment to engage with a congregation during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Grounded in biblical texts, Thomas takes the threads of a variety of writers and contemporary resources and weaves a tapestry of living life faithfully in the midst of a year of constant changes and challenges.
When Larry Mullins was tasked with developing a security program to protect the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was instructed to tell no one except his wife. Decades later, when President Gordon B. Hinckley’s televised funeral brought the role of prophets’ security detail into the public eye, Larry knew the time had finally come to divulge his remarkable insights. In Bodyguard to the Prophet, Larry reveals the unique understanding he gained while serving alongside the beloved prophet Spencer W. Kimball. You’ll learn ?? The logistics: What it takes to protect the President of the Church. ?? The threats: Why it was necessary to protect the “prophet of peace.” ?? The stories: What it was like to get help teaching Sunday School lessons from a prophet, how Sister Kimball felt about living with a security detail, and what life is like behind the scenes of Church leadership. Bodyguard to the Prophet not only offers a view of the prophet from a whole new perspective, it also reminds us that with enough faith and diligence, we can each serve as a usable tool in the Lord’s hand.
