Rube Marquard's life was touched by success and scandal at nearly every turn. In 1906, the teenage pitcher defied his father and became a ballplayer. Two years later, the Giants purchased his contract for the then record $11,000. He soon became the best left-handed pitcher in the game; over the course of his career he won 201 games, threw a no-hitter and pitched in five World Series. Off the field, Marquard was a master at marketing himself, recreating his story as it suited him. He wrote his own newspaper column, starred in movies, delighted crowds by catching balls thrown off high buildings, and even appeared as a female impersonator. But it was his affair and brief marriage with vaudeville sensation Blossom Seeley that caused the most uproar. Along with Seeley, Marquard became the toast of Broadway to the chagrin of his baseball fans. Throughout his life, the pitcher re-created his story as it suited him; his largely fanciful account of his career in Lawrence Ritter's Glory of Their Times (1966) was largely responsible for his election to the Hall of Fame in 1971. Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808) lived in ‘decidedly interesting times’ in which established orders in politics and science were challenged by revolutionary new ideas. Enthusiastically participating in the heady atmosphere of Enlightenment debate, Beddoes' career suffered from his radical views on politics and science. Denied a professorship at Oxford, he set up a medical practice in Bristol in 1793. Six years later - with support from a range of leading industrialists and scientists including the Wedgwoods, Erasmus Darwin, James Watt, James Keir and others associated with the Lunar Society - he established a Pneumatic Institution for investigating the therapeutic effects of breathing different kinds of ‘air’ on a wide spectrum of diseases. The treatment of the poor, gratis, was an important part of the Pneumatic Institution and Beddoes, who had long concerned himself with their moral and material well-being, published numerous pamphlets and small books about their education, wretched material circumstances, proper nutrition, and the importance of affordable medical facilities. Beddoes’ democratic political concerns reinforced his belief that chemistry and medicine should co-operate to ameliorate the conditions of the poor. But those concerns also polarized the medical profession and the wider community of academic chemists and physicians, many of whom became mistrustful of Beddoes’ projects due to his radical politics. Highlighting the breadth of Beddoes’ concerns in politics, chemistry, medicine, geology, and education (including the use of toys and models), this book reveals how his reforming and radical zeal were exemplified in every aspect of his public and professional life, and made for a remarkably coherent program of change. He was frequently a contrarian, but not without cause, as becomes apparent once he is viewed in the round, as part of the response to the politics and social pressures of the late Enlightenment.

Colonel Larry Williams spent twenty-seven years in the United States Marine Corps commanding ten units and organizations while serving from Japan and Vietnam to Moscow and Beirut. Here is his account. It started by a chance discovery and years later was dramatically reoriented by a coin toss. As the high school class of 1953 anticipated graduation they chatted in the hallways exchanging ideas about future plans. His afternoon and Saturday jobs during high school did not provide enough money for college. One day while changing classes he observed a booklet on his homeroom teacher's desk that described the NROTC as how one might earn a commission in the United States Navy and even compete for a college scholarship. It contained an application! Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill four years later he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps preparing to serve the obligated four years payback for his free education. It seemed like a good plan, but life often has little respect for planning. Within three years he was on Okinawa separated from his wife and their two newborns for a thirteen month deployment. On his return he joined the faculty at the Army Artillery and Missile School. Then it was another thirteen months away this time in Vietnam. Reassigned to Frankfurt, Germany he commanded Marine Security Guards in twenty-seven diplomatic posts in Europe including six "behind the Iron Curtain.” Upon graduation from the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk he and a classmate were informed by Headquarters, Marine Corps that they both were to be reassigned to WestPac (western pacific) for a year with one going to Okinawa and the other to Vietnam. Headquarters asked for their preferences. Both wanted to return to Vietnam. He lost the coin toss and it was back to Okinawa. That coin toss was to significantly restructure his career – and his life. The subsequent years included managing the security at the Naval Air Station, Alameda, California made turbulent by the prevailing civil rights and antiwar environment, contributing to the Marine Corps becoming the only military service to support every dollar spent with explicit cost-benefit analysis, in spite of opposition by the Army and the DoD fielding a totally new light armor combat capability into the Marine Corps with an innovative acquisition program completing within budget and only 2.25 years from concept to production, conducting Arctic exercises in North Norway including a night amphibious landing unseen by Russians just a mountain range away in Murmansk, commanding the largest artillery organization in the world and trying unsuccessfully to contribute to a peaceful resolution to conflict in Lebanon in 1983.
