The author was nominated as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, but after critics from the right labelled her the "Quota Queen," the president not only withdrew his nomination but refused to allow her an opportunity to defend herself. Now she writes about what really happened behind closed doors, about the nation's racial history and commitment to equality and democracy, and about the courage of "ordinary" people.

Reclaiming Kalākaua: Nineteenth-Century Perspectives on a Hawaiian Sovereign examines the American, international, and Hawaiian representations of David La‘amea Kamananakapu Mahinulani Nalaiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua in English- and Hawaiian-language newspapers, books, travelogues, and other materials published during his reign as Hawai‘i’s mō‘ī (sovereign) from 1874 to 1891. Beginning with an overview of Kalākaua’s literary genealogy of misrepresentation, Tiffany Lani Ing surveys the negative, even slanderous, portraits of him that have been inherited from his enemies, who first sought to curtail his authority as mō‘ī through such acts as the 1887 Bayonet Constitution and who later tried to justify their parts in overthrowing the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893 and annexing it to the United States in 1898. A close study of contemporary international and American newspaper accounts and other narratives about Kalākaua, many highly favorable, results in a more nuanced and wide-ranging characterization of the mō‘ī as a public figure. Most importantly, virtually none of the existing nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century texts about Kalākaua consults contemporary Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) sentiment for him. Offering examples drawn from hundreds of nineteenth-century Hawaiian-language newspaper articles, mele (songs), and mo‘olelo (histories, stories) about the mō‘ī, Reclaiming Kalākaua restores balance to our understanding of how he was viewed at the time—by his own people and the world. This important work shows that for those who did not have reasons for injuring or trivializing Kalākaua’s reputation as mō‘ī, he often appeared to be the antithesis of our inherited understanding. The mō‘ī struck many, and above all his own people, as an intelligent, eloquent, compassionate, and effective Hawaiian leader.
In January 2001, Lani Imhof and Michael Smith left their jobs, rented out their house, sold their car and headed off on a ten-month odyssey in Latin America. As they travelled through the poorer countries of Bolivia and Peru, they became increasingly uncomfortable with the huge differences between their comparative wealth and the poverty they witnessed in Latin America. Six months into their journey they met a bright and bubbly Quechuan teenager at a village in the highlands of Peru and she introduced them to her family. When Lani and Michael first met the Carbajal Moreira family they had never received mail, didn't have a letterbox and had never heard of email. They were struggling to survive and put food on the table. The six intelligent children had no hope of receiving a higher education. Poor as they were, their generosity and affection touched Lani and Michael's hearts. After the travellers returned to Australia they decided to support the Carbajal Moreiras for the long term; they became godparents to the second eldest daughter and were accepted into the family. What began as a financial commitment blossomed into a life-long bond between the two families which was strengthened by the next two visits they made to Peru to live with the Carbajal Moreiras. This is the story of the growing connection between two families from vastly different backgrounds - a middle class couple from Australia and a poor indigenous family from Peru. It illuminates the differences and the similarities between the lives, experiences and aspirations of the two families, and portrays how the Australian couple's support has resulted in educational and employment opportunities for the children, helping them to break out of the cycle of poverty." -- Provided by publisher.

Practical Ethics in Architecture and Interior Design Practice presents the basics of design practice through ethical scenarios, ushering design students into real-world experiential learning. Each chapter begins with a detailed story involving a complicated set of practical and ethical dilemmas, exemplifying those encountered each day in the world of professional practice. Practice-based topics such as contracts and project delivery methods, marketing design services, cross-cultural collaboration, virtual connectivity, social justice and sustainable design, soft skills, and other related professional practice themes are anchored in realistic scenarios. While all the stories are fictional, in writing them the authors drew from over seventy-five combined years of professional experience in architecture and interior design as well as many years of academic experience in teaching professional practice and ethics to architecture and interior design students. Each story is followed by discussion questions and suggested additional resources. This book provides a unique integrated perspective into the allied fields of architecture and interior design with topics relevant to both fields as well as specific to each profession. It prepares students of both disciplines for the broad issues of professional practice and encourages them to become ethical practitioners ready to contribute effectively to design teams and to ask the right questions.
