This book, The House on Lombardy Lane, was inspired by my days as a teen in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I was disappointed when my parents, who were grocery store merchants, did not buy the house we had looked at on Lombardy Lane, Pulaski Heights, Little Rock, Arkansas, with intentions of purchasing it. Thoughts of this house haunted me throughout my life even throughout twenty-five years of living abroad and teaching for the Department of Defense Overseas Dependent Schools throughout Europe. My family actually bought a gorgeous house on Wolfe Street, West Little Rock, in 1945, conveniently placing our family close to then Little Rock High School (now Little Rock Central High) and making it convenient to walk to school and to work at our third grocery store on West Fourteenth Street, Little Rock. The book tells of the many exciting places I lived and taught in the United States and abroad. The House on Lombardy Lane still captivates my thoughts and illusions as to how much more dynamically I would have completed my lifes journey had my parents purchased this fabulous house of my dreams!

The life story of this World War II Navajo Code Talker introduces middle-grade readers to an unforgettable person and offers a close perspective on aspects of Navajo (or Diné) history and culture. Thomas H. Begay was one of the young Navajo men who, during World War II, invented and used a secret, unbreakable communications code based on their native Diné language to help win the war in the Pacific. Although the book includes anecdotes from other code talkers, its central narrative revolves around Begay. It tells his story, from his birth near the Navajo reservation, his childhood spent herding sheep, his adolescence in federally mandated boarding schools, and ultimately, his decision to enlist in the US Marine Corps. Alysa Landry relies heavily on interviews with Begay, who, as of this writing, is in his late nineties and one of only three surviving code talkers. Begay’s own voice and sense of humor make this book particularly significant in that it is the only Code Talker biography for young readers told from a soldier’s perspective. Begay was involved with the book every step of the way, granting Landry unlimited access to his military documents, personal photos, and oral history. Additionally, Begay’s family contributed by reading and fact-checking the manuscript. This truly is a unique collaborative project.

This book is a nostalgic trip back to how life was in the 1950s, especially for a low-income budgeted family living within a veterans housing project in East Boston, Massachusetts. Household life and its perceptions and observations are seen through the eyes of the youngest female member of the family. The observations are mostly humorous. The years of personal growth and remembrances happen between the ages of two to ten in these stories. Her tenth year on the planet involved a cataclysmic change to the family dynamics. I think you will find yourself bonding with her as she copes with the inevitability of mortality. She loses a parent. Her tale is told as a collection of short stories and reflects life in East Boston which, to this day, is still a community of immigrant families. Each story contains a bit of humor and a bit of pathos as you follow this innocent but funny child through her emotional growth spurts and her sometimes intuitive thought processes about the adults surrounding her. How they cope with her, their budget, and their world makes for interesting reading. She is a reflection of her times and her experiences. She is someone you will get to know and like as she has a voice worth listening to.
